Thinking the RS 5 looks pretty sweet
Ok, I drove it - from a performance standpoint, I was impressed.
But a few of other things were a bit of a turn off - mostly the interior. The lack of leather dash, the alcantera on the shifter, and the shotcut memory buttons - all made the car feel "cheap" compared to to my M3 with full leather. There is a car locally with most of the options I have want, but they are barely discounting it - and it is a 2019 (no 2020 made) Pros AWD (I live in Chicago) Sunroof (yea I miss that) Color (Blue, I wish I had ordered a tanzanite) Has a spare Cons Interior Auto Cost (no free maint), worse depreciation I'm torn. Am I just having an itch? Or is this a better car for Chicago ?

Sportback? Killer all rounder.
Test drove a dark blue '19 as well with the black optic pack. Actually put an offer in but dealer wasn't very negotiable. Unless Audi has changed course (very possible) a pretty major exterior and interior facelift is pending. That includes infotainment, with a touchscreen in place of one of the dials, if I remember correctly. The German automaker on Tuesday showed off updates to both the RS5 coupe and RS5 Sportback destined for Europe, and these updates are coming to America. An Audi USA spokesperson told Roadshow there's no specific date, but that we should look for the car "sometime in 2020." When I learned that I was content not to overpay (imo) for the '19. But no, for daily driver purposes in chi don't think you're crazy for giving it a good look.

I did a review thread on the B9 RS5 before and there are a lot of plus for this car.
The downside is, the pricing of the car is bad compared to the options you have. C63 or the former F8x cars. I don't mind paying closer to 1k for the C63S but not for the RS5, no matter how much I actually do like the car. RS5 has panoramic roof and you have NO options to remove this. It comes with it, you have to live with that fact. Interior wise, it's a bit of a hit or miss for me. Yes lack of a leather dash is extremely confusing considering the type of car the RS5 is supposed to be. I have no way to telling why Audi decided this route. But the look and general minimalist design is a plus for me, I like that part. But when I posted my thread, a few current/former Audi owners mentioned that the infotainment is lacking or doesn't always work properly. Since Porsche is a bit of the same with the PCM (and I hate the PCM with a passion) I am not surprised to hear this. As with a lot of German cars now a days, yes the ZF8 is in the RS5 instead of the DSG. From what i gathered it is primarily because DSG cannot handle the torque so they shoved the ZF8 in it and... as with almost all ZF8 speeds, it lacks character. No matter what type of shenanigans the engineers do, you cannot replicate a 6speed or DCT feel in a torque auto. For me the biggest issue with the RS5 isn't the car itself, it is the pricing that is the problem. Even a RS3 will cost you close to $900 per month regardless if you lease or finance, a RS5 is usually above 1k per month for most people. It is not worth the price compared to all of it's competitors.

RS5's lease for like 1200+ versus the m4 which is 850ish with maintenance included. I think you're buying though so keep in mind Audi reliability is SHIT compared to the m4 which is pretty stout. Especially if you're going to keep it for a long time. Regardless, all the new Audi owners I know keep sending their cars back for random BS issues. Like 2018+ S line cars.
The m4 is faster especially from a roll. If you're rolling, and floor the gas at 40 mph or 60 mph the m4 will 10000% gap the rs5. Rs5 sounds good though with just some custom deletes. Rs5 digital dash + pano roof and sound System are superior to the M4 I'd think though so I'm surprised you see it as a con compared to our cars. |

I couldn't stand the light steering wheel and complete lack of feedback, or a ride that feels so soft as to make you feel disconnected from the road. Not what I expected from an RS5 as they shifted this latest model more towards an RS7 in feel.
With that being said, the SB looks wonderful and I would still consider it the next time around. Yeah, if you come from a full-leather M3/M4, the RS5's interior trimmings looks rather spartan. My friend has had his for a year now and he loves it. Zero issues. Also, the DSG can handle the torque of the 2.9TT, they have it in the Porsche Macan Turbo. Audi's shifting to the ZF8 is a strange one, as the DL501 can handle a good bit more power (more than double its power rating) by a simple software revision.

Thanks guys - great feedback.
Couple of things First, off I forgot to mention, with Audi, if you get the cool-looking flat bottom steering wheel, You lose the heated steering wheel option! In fact, you have to make sure the car has the "Cold Weather" package that gets you the heated (round) steering wheel and heated rear seats. It is not even listed on the website. So... many of the cars out there won't do it for me, cause dammit,, I live in Chicago and that heated steering wheel is a must for me (serious) - and no, I've been told you can't add it after the fact. Next, I think the cheapness of the interior focuses mostly on the dash being plastic and the way they organized everything down by the shifter. One fun thing is that their shortcut buttons 1-8 are a single piece of plastic. Press down on #1 (left side) and the right side pops up like a popsicle stick would - yea, you are just supposed to "touch it" but still, cheap! And the toggle switches for the MMI - those are cheap (to me) as well. The digital dash is however sweet. The car I test drove did not have the B&O stereo - so it sounded terrible from a stereo standpoint. The one I'm 1/2 considering does have this (although it does not have the dynamic steering, something I do find interesting as I loved it in my 550 and X6.) The last time I considered an Audi was in 2013 and the S6 - the steering did feel over boosted and the car having the DSG was a huge bummer for me. Lots of people had issues with the car "not going" when you needed it to (like when you want to cross the street fast). I'm seriously glad Audi has put the ZF into the RS-5. And.. I thought the steering felt great compared to my M3 - but only in dynamic mode! In regular comrfort it was terrible. And yes, at $95K, the pricing is out of line (both cars I'm considering have the carbon front brakes - which I have not heard bad things about, but at $5K for that and an engine cover, that's just crazy). One dealer is more reasonably asking $77K but another is at $87K. I'm not doing that and I'm still not sure I want to lose my manual trans in my DD. Lots to think about. I suspect I'm half happy that the car closest to me is priced out of line.

I tried to like the RS5
Was disappointed in test drive but mostly disappointed with differentiation vs S5. Honestly feels/looks like identical with with wheels and a tune for 50k B7 RS4 was more of a bespoke car vs S4

I prefer a single turbo air-to-air intercooled engine, and the performance when I drove the S5 from 0-80 is plenty fun for what I need. I'd take the 20k savings and mod an S5 Sportback if it was up to me. It still looks killer. I also prefer the available seat color options in the S5. The RS5 is limited to black with colored contrast stitching, and it's just not as interesting as the S5 options.

I was looking for a sporty daily a couple mo ths back. I test drove the rs3 (felt waaayyy too cheap inside) and the rs5 (steering did not feel inspired or sporty).
Didnt consider a c63s because we already have a glc 63 (wifes car). Even though its an suv it had way more character and smiles per gallon compared to those audis. Ended up with an f80. |

Regarding other's comments re: Ride/Steering - you simply must put the car in dynamic mode. I thought the ride was similar to my M3 (maybe a touch softer? I have the 19s) and the steering a touch better.

Uh, actually you have it the other way around. The RS 5 is faster.

i really really wanted to buy an rs5 but found it so boring to drive....
i would wait for the awd m3. sad that the 6 speeds manual will not be available in awd but it will still be better to drive than an audi rs5 for sure. i've own a 2004 audi a4 b6 and a 2013 audi allroad, i love audi but the new one are so boring, it's sad, they are very quick car but that's it. absolutely no driving emotions at all. |

Considered an RS5 SB last year for my wife, as her X5M was overkill for her...IRL the RS5 has presence, and drove well, but lacked that feeling of being an RS model, seemed similar to something more from M Performance

We've had a BMW/Audi garage for quite a long time as we appreciate the individual benefits each brand offers. Plus, my wife really likes Audis.
When it was time to replace the last one, we ended up going with the cheapest one, the RS3. We found it is the one the offered the best driving experience. We found the RS5 to be very isolated, muted and numb and it did not feel any faster than the RS3 that felt like a little rocket go-kart (and test data in fact shows the RS5 isn't any faster than the RS3). My wife decided to forgo the more high end feel of the RS5 for the better driving experience of the RS3.

While I agree with some of the comments re edge/responsiveness, etc. - I seriously thought the car was at least 9/10ths of my M3... once again, in dynamic mode. In normal or comfort or whatever it was called... yea, it was a touch sloppy.
And the dynamic stuff is an option so it is possible that some of y'all did not either have it or have it turned on (I had one of those dealers who had to teach me everything about the car - that was not the most pleasant experience). That same dealer did however have access to a test track where I could really have some fun (legally and safely) - and that's where I was really surprised by the car. I do however love the edge of the M3 - rawness? Compared to the RS-5 and I certainly don't appreciate the car being $95K with some massive depreciation on the horizon. Still it is pretty

I definitely agree that it lacks the feel and aggressive nature that I would associate with RS cars. I think the drop from V8 to V6 (as well as manual) really hurt the RS5, that old engine was simply fantastic, I'm not really a fan of the new 2.9 (or the 3.0) as they just lack character.

If you're in an M4 just don't race it from a dig.. you'll never lose a race you didn't run. Lol it sounds stupid but I'm not a fan of dig racing because if one person gets a slightly better launch/reaction they have a massive advantage. Rolling races are better indicators for power and real world acceleration you'll feel while driving. |
