I got into a "dream car" conversation with a casual car guy who knows a little but not a lot about cars.

I spouted off my list of cars (GT4, SLS, 993 GT3 etc) then he said:

"How about a Corvette?"

Then I just politely say "maybe, it's doesn't really do anything for me."

Here's the reply that got me:

"Maybe one day when you're ballin'!"



Im my mind, I'm thinking: True, the Corvette is faster, but I could have one now if I wanted, it's in the same price range as my M3. Does this person think I have a $45k 3 series?

Ya I can see this happening when your car is the same color as the base 3 series. All they see is a white or black car and don't necessarily care about anything else.

For what it's worth my car is Sakhir Orange and it has never been mistaken for a run of the mill 3/4 series.

And I personally would correct someone if they came up and said my car was a GTS and tell them how far off they are.

My neighbor asked me if my M3 is electric like a Toyota Prius. I thought that was sort of funny because he also commented about how loud it is. He did say the car is beautiful though, so it wasn't all bad. Fact is, some people just aren't car people. They have other interests.

I'd say a good majority of people are not car people. They may know a marque, but they don't know models, the engines they have, etc. Hell the girls I live with wouldn't know if the car had 6 cylinders or 4, I'm not sure they can adequately describe what a cylinder is either.

Whenever there are random people told me I have a nice car, I always reply them it is just a 3 series.

I got the M3 for my own driving pleasure so I can't really sympathize. But then again I'm a married man with a daughter so the time to impress others have come and gone. Just happy that the wife has not asked me to trade it in for a minivan (yet).

Based on that response, I would wager he thought Mustang (GT) when you said GT4/GT3.

Why are you making assumptions? How are you soo sure that this is the reason I have an M4? I assure you that my 328i looked just as good as my M4. In fact, if attention is what I wanted - I would have just kept my modded 328i. Also, you do realize that there are plenty of cars at this price range that are better at seaking attention? Perhaps relax and think over what you post next time. You seem very defensive when my post was not even about you.

Never cared too much what other people think about my car. I have a few car enthusiast friends that I can discuss cars with and I do. What I do like is forums like this where, not only can you talk about your car, you can talk to people with far more knowledge than yourself. I have really enjoyed being a member of this forum.

It depends on who I'm talking to.

If it's someone I feel bad for, I would respond "yeah man, these 320i's are so freakin' sweet!!! They come with power windows standard!!!"

If it's someone I'm trying to show off to, I would be like "YOU IGNORANT PIECE OF DOG SHIT! ARE YOU INBRED??? GET YOUR FILTHY SWEATY HANDS AWAY FROM MY BMW INDIVIDUAL PAINT JOB! THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A ONE-OFF CUSTOM ORDER M3! YOUR FRIENDS ENTIRE FAMILY COULDN'T AFFORD THIS CAR IF THEY CROWD SOURCED ALL THEIR MONEY FOR A DOWNPAYMENT!

PS: This would never happen if you had Austin Yellow Metalic or Sakhir Orange. People would routinely confused my car for an M5, which is still offensive, but there was never any confusion that it was an ///M car!

We have the new M3 and a 320i sport with the track handling pack. The M3 and the 320 are both alpine white over black. The 320, as built, is a VERY nice car.

I'll tell you it is much sweeter than any 328 I have driven. Not sure why, but in 2 wheel drive guise it is very nicely balanced.

It's absolutely normal. There are many different 3 series models. What do you expect? Remember, most people don't know much about cars, especially BMWs.
