M8 Competition Nürburgring 7:32.79 - Sport Auto

Should it have been faster for a flagship from BMW? I wonder how it will compare with the new G82 M4.

That's a quick time. But fast lap doesn't mean fun car though. That's the part bmw is missing. Give me the gt3 or gt4 instead.

Whoa. Hold up.

Nice showing by the Supra!!!

I thought M8 is supposed to be luxury A Bahn missile, not a track star, so that seems ok to me and pretty cool it’s close to 718 gt4

You’d pick the gt4 to go lapping with your friends and you’d pick the m8 for a frankfurt to Düsseldorf weekend trip.

Don’t think about it in terms of trade offs. Think in terms of how you can assemble a fleet of these in your garage to cover all your different vehicle needs

It’s not a terrible time, but it’s not great either especially when you consider in the real world these cars are making 700+ hp. It’s well of the pace of a generation old 911 turbo and will be well behind the 992 turbo or turbo S which should be closing in on 7 flat.

The GT4 time is incredible, especially considering it’s a manual. I bet the GT4 with PDK runs 7:19.

Seems pretty good. I consider these as an alternative to an S class coupe, not a track star.

Agree, the 8er in general is just a case of identity crisis. It doesn't know if it wants to be a luxury car or a sports car, but in the ends fails to do either. Its not as luxurious as a flagship should be (unlike the S-coupe), and its not as fun or engaging as a sports car should be (especially compared to a 911, AMG GT or R8 which could be had at similar pricing or just a tad more).

The M8 is a $150,000 German muscle car.

That's a HUGE, HEAVY car pulling 'ring track times equivalent to a dedicated lightweight mid-engined 2 seater Cayman GT4.

That's kinda freaking impressive.

Bruh, you realise how big and heavy the M8 is, right? For what the M8 is, a luxury GT, it's actually damn quick round a track.

A defining feature of a muscle car is that it must be affordable to the average joe. The M8 is no more a German muscle car than the Aston Martin Vantage is a Brit muscle car or the Lexus LC is a Japanese muscle car. They are luxurious sporty cruisers for the very rich, not muscle cars.

The Ring caters well to high hp cars and the m5/m8 are making minimally 700 hp if you take the 617 wheel hp ratings into consideration. I have an M5C so I know well these cars are generously underrated.
I find the lower hp cars like a 440 hp 992S or the 6MT 420 hp NA engine GT4 that can run with and beat cars that are making 600,650,700 hp given their much worse power to weight ratios more impressive. Sure the sedans are big and heavy, but they are making hundreds more hp and suspension tech and tires today along with the power are able to overcome the weight penalty.
You're such a fanboi troll

Funny that the list left off the Civic Type R.

For what type of car, I think the M8 is doing quite well around a track that long. Will be interesting to see what it does around tighter tracks like Streets of Willow and it's "more open" neighbor Willow Springs

Just for context here I believe the M4GTS did it in 7:28.

Make what you want out of that.

Just keeping the comparison like for like, Sport Auto ran the M4 GTS in their Supertest and clocked at 7:37.

All of their times can be found here:

Hard to believe there's any question about this being impressive. It's a 4500# grand tourer on P Zeros, independently tested (not by M), and it ran equal to a 991.1 GT3. Sheesh.

Based on the weight Sport Auto published, looks to be 4,160 lbs (1891 kg). These cars make insane amounts of power and easily over 700 if dyno results are to be believed. C&D did a dyno on an M5 Competition and it dyno'd 617 wheel HP and the M8 Competition has shown to be faster than the M5 by good margin.

Yes about equal to what is now a pretty old GT3 (7 years ago) and hasn't a good portion of the track been repaved over the years making it several seconds faster and meaning times are harder and hard to compare from several years apart?

I'm seeing curb anywhere from 4295 (C&D) to 4,560 (autoblog).

But no matter. talking 2+ tons and 1,000+ lbs. more than the GT3 on high performance street tires. P Zeros at that. I'm not comparing the two, but rather using the GT3 as a reference. The cars are not competitors in any sense.

It's a grand tourer not intended to compete with lap times, and it runs a 7:32. To my knowledge BMW M didn't even publish a lap time for it.

I don't know who's buying M8's, but they're not at the track. 7:32 means that it offers substantially more limit performance than 99% of those drivers will ever utilize. Can argue M shouldn't be going this direction (I would), but that doesn't mean the objective performance accomplishment isn't remarkable.

Heavy car either way but I was going by the Sport Auto weight as I recall they do weigh each car they test which they show for the M8 Competition of 1891 kg.

Strong performance coming from a lot of these large(r) saloon cars, and even SUV's these days. Within the 7:30-7:40 bracket there are a bunch - M5/8Competitions, Panamera turbo, AMG GT 4dr. And the Taycan @ I believe 5600 lbs and no special tire did 7:42 and the RSQ8 also 7:42. Who would have ever thought...

There is also a difference of one strong lap of performance and sustained laps at near similar time. While some may come close to a GT3 of many years ago in a single lap, I'd estimate they'd fall further and further behind with additional laps. The GT3 may not have the hp but I think it has endurance and repeatability that stands stronger to go with its pretty incredible lap times (all things considered).

A big difference. One lap Nurburgring is it's own thing. 7:32 is an indication of how the M8 comp could cover ground in the real world if unrestricted. It's a missile of a grand tourer.
