subscribed. noticed it after pulling out of the dealership for the first time. I was glad I'd read it was a common finding beforehand so it didn't ruin my first miles. heard it again last week (~1800miles now). strange noise, indeed. sounds like something rubbing along the edge of a metal hear shield which would cause a high frequency vibration of the metal. nails on a chalkboard for sure. nothing else to add but will be nice to confirm it's NBD.

Question: What do we know about the noise on cars equipped with (a) 18' wheels, and (b) CC brakes?
It occurs regardless of tranny, both manual and DCT cars have reported it.

Scraping noise
So today while leaving my garage there was a scraping noise coming from my car. It sounded like a tin can being scraped across a metal bar. As soon as I heard it I stopped and then when I tried going it went away and I wasn't able to get a video of it.
Later that day getting off the highway I heard it again. This time it didn't stop and so I had to get it flatbedded to bmw at 1 am and now I'm waiting on them. Unfortunately I don't know how to post a video but it was horrible. Just thought I'd let you guys know |

This could be the issue others have reported around objects getting stuck in the shield that protects the rotors. There's a few threads on this. Hope that's the case.

There are a number of suggestions on here but doesn't seem to be any definitive answer. I have had it in early days but not recently. One suggestion is that it is to do with the handbrake and it helps to periodically apply the handbrake briefly when moving off slowly especially after driving on wet roads or the car having been washed or left in the rain.

Scrapping noise
Yes I have had the same noise a couple of times and it has gone a way. Interesting about the rain or washing the car as that noise occured after washing it and leaving it overnight. Also is there an issue with the hand brake ? Please post what they discover.

Wow. Turned out it was a big rock in the break shield which is why it didn't fly out. Stupid construction tore up the roads around my place so there's rocks everywhere.
Turns out I had a nail in my other tire though. $390 a tire $430 out the door : |

i guess the rocks are the issue here i wonder if it is due to the drilled rotors. Is there a different type of brke shield that could be put on to remedy the problem ?

Heard the noise as well, on and off. Noise will stop on command when I lift the e-brake 2 notches. I guessed it was a stuck rock, but it's happened 3-4 times now, always resolving itself after short stints. Sounds like it may be a design flaw if it's frequently trapping flying rocks...
