If the fabled ///M's of yesteryear were dredged up for a comparo against their competitor's current offerings, they'd come off as slow, plodding, gas-thirsty relics.
Rather than bemoan the fact that an 'enthusiast's' car now comes with an electric starter rather than a crank, I rejoice in the fact that BMW has once again foiled its competitors by throwing its engineering mojo behind producing a lighter, nimbler and faster model - by subtracting pounds and not by simply adding more horses. Though I don't see engineering progress as a threat to what an ///M is all about, I do think that BMW is throwing the "M" word a little too loosely these days with its M trim this and M trim that. Neophytes will likely have trouble understanding that a 435 with the M badge pasted on its side is not an actual M4 car - that the M has to come before the number for that to happen. We'll, at least we 'enthusiasts' know. Perhaps that's enough.

Perfectly said, I had a buddy in my e90 m sports package and he saw the M logo on the steering wheel and said wow nice M3 lol. I agree that they are just adding too many m packages to all of their cars. |

It's funny when you go back and read that stuff huh? If I had a lot of spare time, I'd research the old threads to see how many of those E9X haters ended up buying the car, and if any of those are now F8X haters.

Don't waste your time, they have long changed their names a 100 times by now and still live in the shadows lol. Just look at what you and I have encountered in the past 3 weeks with one guy whom changed user names about 4 times.

Seeing the recently posted pictures of the Silverstone F80 M3 w/ carbon ceramics has me very, very excited to drive one. I really respect BMW M for lightening the new car up and going with an inline 6.
That said, I think competitors are taking notice of the new F80 M3's lighter weight. The next generation W205 C63 is reportedly going to be 2-300 pounds lighter than the outgoing W204. So it will be around 3,500 lbs with a 493 horsepower, 4.0L biturbo V8.

......... http://www.m3post.com/forums/showpos...9&postcount=21 For months I've been waving red warning flags here. The specs and pre-release info all added up to the apocalypse we are now seeing. I've been in this game for too long to be fooled by the 'M' hype. |

As I always say, tradition is the illusion of permanence. Change isn't the end of the world, just the beginning of a new era. As long as the F8X Ms are
1. Fun to drive w/ tactile feedback 2. Reliable on track 3. Agile it should draw in new enthusiasts. I cannot wait for the reviews to roll out and hopefully brush off the reluctance and doubt lingering in many of our heads.

'M' repurposed
'M' was short for Motorsport. Now it's just 'M'. 'The Most Powerful Letter in the World', according to BMW. The other 9 (5?) letters, obviously less powerful, were recently let go. Probably still looking for work, who would hire 'otorsport'...

BMW most definitely will. Some recent reports (featured on the front page) have indicated that the next M5 will have close to 600 horsepower and will weigh up to 400 pounds less than the F10. If this information is accurate, I reckon that BMW is well on its way to firing back.
Hopefully now that the trend is toward achieving greater efficiency (via forced induction), both AMG and M will focus on making their offerings lighter.
