“Basically I know what I’m getting from BMW and unsure from Alfa. I do think “what if” like all of us car guys do, but I’m very satisfied with my choice. I do wish the M3 pulled like that QV though, it was definitely noticeable!”

Exactly right!

I have the standard steel rotors which are exemplary on the street but do shed a lot of dust.

Decided to try the Guilia QV

My 2016 ZCP M3 lease is coming to an end so I decided to check out the Giulia QV, C63S, and M3 CS. For what I was looking for, I felt the Giulia QV offered the best combo of features and after being just one signature from buying an M3 CS, I felt it was a great value (carbon fiber hood, carbon fiber roof, carbon fiber trunk, carbon fiber seat backs (Sparcos), carbon ceramic brakes, flat plane crank, etc.). I still have my 2016 ZCP M3 for comparison. I can't say that the Giulia QV is clearly superior but it does offer a unique experience with extremely responsive steering (this was the feature I missed the most after the initial test drive), what seems to be a huge amount of power throughout the rev range, and drive modes that significantly change the feel of the car. The interior knobs do not feel as high quality as the M3, but overall I like the simple yet purposeful layout. The engine sounds unique but is noticeably quieter in normal mode than the M3 - this can be fixed with $2 worth of 1/4" vacuum line plugs to keep the exhaust flaps open all the time. I don't have any issue braking with the carbon ceramic brakes.

The CCB's were the only option that I did not get.

I test drove both cars, one with CCB's and one without. I felt that the car without the CCB's drove better for everyday driving

I'm really intrigued by this car. My coworker has one and I see it every day in the garage. It's pretty badass but I just can't get over how much the front end looks like a Pontiac.

Nice video Captain, I enjoy watching your track vids. Was the track wet, or were you just flicking the wipers to clean the windshield?

Oh, Thanks! It was not like wet, but some small drops hit the window now and then. The scary part with NBR is it could instanly poor down rain at any bend. Hence when wether are like this I drive safe and not as agressive as If the sun was out and no rain in the air.

You live in Miami, I live in Boston. In the cold weather, the CCB are terrible, as they require a lot of heat to gain full benefit, something explicitly profiled in the owner’s manual. Some people get them if they plan to track the car, but I’ve heard of many Porsche guys who actually remove their CCB for hitting the track due to expense. They supposed wear longer but cost 2x as much to replace. Personally, I think many people get them thinking they are cool but really don’t get any tangible benefit whatsoever. To each their own. Feel the same way about the Sparcos, but again, where I live, heated seats are an absolute must. Great car, though!

The difference is even more dramatic in northern winters. Steel seem plenty capable enough for 98% of the drivers.

Anybody has done 1-2 track days per month for a while can comment on the track reliability for QV? Any overheat? Any limb mode issue? Certain mods have to be done for high intermediate track pace? How's the car holding up (in terms of building quality) after track abuses?

Yeah I know but I just want to ask explicitly so maybe somebody else can chime in as well. I did read from alfa forum that some guy wasn't as fortunate as him though.

Over in the QV track day threads, the biggest limitation seems to be the stock rotors which tend to get cooked by the Continental drive by wire system. The system appears to overbrake on track and bc it’s drive by wire, you cannot feel when the brakes begin to fade, compounding the problem since you don’t know to ease up or let them cool. The ccbs apparently do not solve this either. And with no aftermarket rotor upgrades available yet, just be conscious of heavy braking tracks at advanced levels. Captain above doesn’t seem to be having this problem from the vids but this is what I’ve read from some of the advanced drivers in the QV forums. It also helps to keep the car in Race mode so the computer doesn’t use the brakes for traction and stability control, etc.

Personally, I did not choose the Alfa for track day duties, more so spirited back road driving, which is where it really excels due to it refinement and balance. With that said, a professional racer with a Quadrifoglio has really beaten the hell out of his and has discovered the only real limitation when highly stressed is the brakes. I think the crux of his comments was that there was no direct venting to the calipers/rotors, and he suggested channeling increased airflow via additional ducting...and changing to more of a track compound versus the stock street compound. Rambler is right that the CCB did not solve the issue because it was not a steel vs ceramic situation, just more of a cool air situation. He also chewed up the edge of his tires quite a bit too, but given his professional racing background, I suspect his track use intensity is way more than would be the case for 99.9% of the guys on this forum. Having done a hot lap with one of those guys in an AMG SLS Black Series at Lime Rock, I can tell you they really crank things up to 11 versus the average Joe blow weekend warrior. It’s like the difference of when somebody played Little League as a kid vs having played 10 seasons for the Red Sox.
