Would you say getting an M car is a downgrade from a Porsche?

Not a downgrade, but if I could I'd rather get p car 911 vs the m4.

Not really, I sold my 2014 911 C4S about a month ago, and took delivery of my new 2018 M4 ZCP yesterday. I say "not really", as it depends on your circumstances. I simply had too many cars, and decided to sell them all. During that process I took my time to evaluate future choices and asked myself what I really wanted to drive for fun and on a daily basis. Don't get me wrong, I loved my 911 - it is a fantastic car and incredible to drive, but at the altitude where I live, believe it or not, the power was just not there for me. I was also tired of driving a large lumbering SUV - LX570, again, an incredible vehicle that will take you everywhere in grand luxury. Getting rid if my 2011 M3 ZCP was the hardest choice, but it too sold in less than a day. If you think that the torque is lacking in the E92 M3, wait to see what it feels like at 7 000+ feet above sea level. So back to your original question, it depends on your circumstances and how you, personally, actually view your decision. My plan is to keep my M4 as a daily, and move into a 911 Turbo S in June of next year, so I will be back in the 911 world. Initially, when selling my C4S, my thinking was that I was downgrading, then I changed my thinking to: "I'm making this decision for practical terms, I've taken care of my family for 30+ years, making sure that all of my decisions placed them first, they're all gone now, so I am going to drive the cars I want to drive." So, again, it depends on your circumstances, and more importantly, how you interpret and view your choices.

I have switched out of 911s into M3s three times now. I love both but the M3 is so much more practical and usable and, frankly, I think better looking.

nope - I considered at a lot of cars before I got this one, and this is the best value best features car on the market for me. Same thing when I looked to re-up this time, again getting an M4. The p-cars just look a bit snoozer to me, as do their drivers.
As a kid, and really up until 5 or so years ago, I always wanted a p-car, but right now I'd never get one over my M4 even if they were the same price. The M4 is more practical, better looking, and doesn't give up much performance. With a p-car you're paying a LOT LOT LOT of money for a fairly small performance increase and to have porsche. And I think if I were going to spend that much on less practical car, I'd get a GT AMG: V8 + looks = A p-car just isn't worth it for me, and I'm not old enough to drive one. Maybe when I'm 80.

Better value, yes. But I think in every other measurable way, an M4 is the lesser car (downgrade, call it what you may). I believe you are fond of leasing as well. The price differential on an M4 and 911 lease would obviously heavily favor an M4 every time. It's not even close. A 911 of any iteration will always be the more upscale coupe compared to an M4, comparable model years ofcourse. Drawing comparisons or parallels between a 2018 M4 and a 2011 911 is just silly. . The M3 obviously has a very distinct advantage. |

(a.) If "better car" = better value, then the M4 wins (b.) If "better car" = "upscale" (whatever the fuck that douchyness means), then the 911 wins Then I made the right choice!! Because not a douche and like value! Thanks! |

having both, I would say no. Different cars, different missions.

It'll always depend...there's no universal "M car is a downgrade" and vice versa.
I'd never ever give up my M for a Boxster, Cayman, 718, etc. but would I swap it for a Turbo or GT3? Hells yea. But then for the $$$ you're even beyond M GTS territory and it's not a fair comparison (I'd still take the GT3). But for the price + value, M cars will run circles around P cars all day.

I think it depends...
I came from a P car, having owned several BMWs prior to the 981 CS that I had for two years. The P car was better in all of the driving dynamics...better steering, better handling, true sports car roots, and much much better sound. But the M serves a much wider range of purposes and is a better DD. I can also take 3 other people with me comfortably wherever I go - which comes in handy. It's the best BMW I have ever owned by a large margin. The 981 is the best car I have ever owned...but also the most expensive. I am not yet at the point in life where the cost of ownership is easily absorbed...so I came back to BMW for the value proposition. You get a lot of bang for your buck in an F80/82. That's hard to beat. I definitely see myself in a P car again someday...and if I am lucky, I will have an ///M for DD and a P car for thrashing. I have to admit that a 991.1 GTS would check all the boxes mentioned above, but I can't afford it.

If you must have only one car that can be DD and track-ready, for a more reasonable price, then an M is really hard to beat. If you want a true, dedicated, built from the ground up sports car, then the P car (Cayman, Boxster, 911) is really hard to beat. If I had a 3 car garage and more disposable income, I would still have a Porsche - simple as that.

So a porsche is not a downgrade, nor an upgrade, but a step sideways to accomplish a different mission. |
