"Must see" locations during ED

Hi all, so after some time waiting, and a long time of pondering on certain options I finally made the decision on a final build and it's due for Welt pick up in April. I would like to know of some places for me that is a "must" to visit while I am in the area. I do have a list of places that I am visiting, but I welcome recommendation (trying to get the most out of my trip). The places I am for sure staying at is as follow: Munich, Stuttgart, Bern, Zurich, Lausanne, and Geneva. Are there any places in those area that is a must to see ? Thanks guys!

When in April? My pickup date is 4/29.

We will be heading in a different direction than you. We will head to Dachau, Salzburg by way of Cafe Winklstuberl (saw it on another members trip and it made me hungry), Berchtesgaden Salt Mines, Swarovski, Aqua Dome, Lindau/Lake Konstanz, and Castles on our way back to Munich. All in all, it is an 11 day trip (including flights). Our plan is to stay in each hotel for two nights, except our last night at the Munich Airport Hilton. Longest drive time is planned to be 4 hours, but we will see.

Of the destinations we've gone during our ED including the popular ones like Neuschwanstein, Eagle's Nest, etc, Salzburg was by far our favorite.

Mine is on April 12th, I will be spending the 10th to 12th in Munich then head to Stuttgart. I want to go to Cafe Winklstuberl, but after seeing that other member that went to Switzerland for his ED I was sold on. I am also partial to Geneva and Lausanne. We will also be staying at the Munich Airport Hilton on the 19th. The rates for the first 2 nights in Munich is awfully high for some reason. I hope the longest drive will be the one from Stuttgart to Geneva, but who knows.

We went for 10 days. I forgot to mention another notable place we've visited: Highline179 just outside of Fussen.

Here is our lookbook that documented our journey if you all are interested: http://andyhsu.com/ed/

I took a quick gander at your lookbook, very impressive. Great shots too, I need to practice on my photography so I can have some picture worthy posts.

It all depends on what you want out of the trip... I would strongly suggest staying at least 2 nights in as many of your hotels as possible. Makes the trip much less stressful and you'll waste less time.
It's super touristy but there is a reason most people see Neuschwanstein , it's a beautiful place if you can work it in and you really only need a couple of hours there.
For me the Beer gardens weren't the greatest, fun but if you are in to food at all you'll waste a meal on a beer garden that could be spent enjoying some phenomenal restaurants. That said I built my trip around beautiful sites, world class hotels and top restaurants and didn't care to do the ring or even drive my car every day for that matter. Everybody is different

every tourist goes to hopfbrauhaus,it is extremely crowded and noisy , service is bad , food is even worse and the beer is the same
as in other places , there are plenty of other beer gardens that are much better and carry different brands of beer

locals go to smaller beer gardens

I also really like Southern Germany and Austria a lot. Northern Italy is always a good choice!

IF you go to Venice, my advice would to stay at a small island called: Lido di Jesolo... it's ~40 kms by car from Venice. But stay on Jesolo, a beach town... then drive to the end of the island(near Camping Village Marina di Venezia)... and take one of the water buses that run into the center of Venice. five euros for parking and 6 euros for a 24 hour travel ticket. Or take a small boat directly from one of the many points on the beach of Jesolo!) THAT is the only way to see Venice - arriving at the center of San Marco by water! Jesolo is very popular with Germans and Austrians... and there are very few Americans that come there. The highest building is ten stories and all the street stores are open to 11pm every night. Its a nice place with lots to do.

Have you considered visiting the Sella Alps area ?

And of course...

I'm not really a fan of Switzerland. Its nice for a day or so. But its so dam expensive! Everything is three times more expensive than in Germany or France. Like 50 euros for some schnitzel or 5 euros for a small Coke. Its crazy. Plus the Polizei have a gazillion speed cameras and the speed liit is set so low there. 80 kph on back roads and only 100 to 120 kph on Autobahns. Drive more than 40 kph over and they TAKE your car. +3kph over the limit can cost around 130 euros and up. They are nuts.

IF you must go to Geneva... stay in Anncey, France. It's a beautiful city by a huge lake and the prices are good/decent. Only 40 kms away from Geneva.

I'm surprised you didn't mention Lake Como. ? That is also a very nice area to visit. But like I said... I much prefer Southern Germany, Austria(Tyrol) and Northern Italy.

Good Luck in your travels.

Well, yes and no. Ferrari and Lambo.. 45 minutes apart they are just over 1/2 day combined.

The longest single drive is about 7 hours.

It'll be busy no doubt, but I usually drive about 22-25k miles per year.. 2,100(ish) over two weeks is right in line.

ok so you are used to it , also consider the traffic,

about Venice in the other post, going to Lido is a great idea rather than drive to Venice and try to park at troncheto, it is always crowded then you take another expensive boat to go to Venice

another way to go to Venice is by train, park the car in Padova and train will get you directly inside the city

Definitely listen to Dackelone , his ED "places to see" thread is Epic and was a huge reference point for my own ED.

It all depends upon how much time you have, but in Munich my highlights were:

Dachau
Augustiner-Keller
Hofbrauhaus

In southern Bavaria it was Hohenschwangau/Neuschwanstein

I read through a ton of ED threads and picked out what I thought was great and what worked with our schedule.

We also visited Heidelberg because I was born and lived my first year there....so it was a bit special. It also is one of the most beautiful and romantic town/cities in Germany.

Next time i'd visit a few other castles, Berchtesgaden, Eagles Nest and head into Austria.

Truly, part of the joy was researching by looking at the threads.....the planning was almost as fun as the doing

Have fun!

+1 for Aqua Dome. This was an awesome experience. A great spa nestled in the Austrian Alps. Great deals can be found on hotel discount websites as well. We only stayed one night (mistake, should stay at very least two) and paid about 300 Euro.

My advise is to pick less places and stay longer in each. Biggest mistake North American European travelled make is trying to see more then their time limit allows. I'd suggest 3-4 days at least in each place you go.

my ED is 4 days in Munich, 3 days Lake of Konstanze, 4 days Lake Como, 4 days Alsace and 7 days in Paris.

If I had less time I'd scratch one off the list rather then spend less time in each to see all the places.
