How is your f80 in the snow?
With a snowstorm coming to the northeast, this will be my first few days commuting through some sleet and snow in my F80 (I got it in April of 2023).
I used to drive my e46 M3 through the winter on dedicated snowtires and I only ran into issues because it was lowered. The F80 came with a new set of Continental DWS06 Plus. What are your experiences driving your F80 through the snow, for those of you that do... Last edited by TheDough; 02-13-2024 at 10:52 AM.. |

Always driven my RWD bmws in the winters here in Ontario Canada. Just need a set of dedicated winters and they do great! I also rust proof the rear subframe and some suspension hardware.

front engine + rear drive + lsd. Those are the ingredients for fun.
With proper tires the car is very capable. Snow/ice is a great way to practice car control if you have a safe environment (e.g. empty parking lot). In case you are in the market for winter tires... https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2071864 Ps. Road salt is nasty stuff so try to rinse the car. |

It's all about the tires. Dedicated winters make an M car be a blast in the snow

As mentioned, once you have proper tires you’ll be well sorted out. We’re also expecting a decent amount in NYC in a few hours and while I would love to be out and about on my Alpin 5, the issue I have is that for the next few days the pipe on the side of the house will be frozen as it’s going to be cold out so the road salt would just end up sitting there.
I’m all for the fun in the snow though sounds like you’ll be commuting through the coarse salt which I fear for. |

Agree with everyone - it’s all about having the right tires. M cars with LSDs are easier to drive in snow than a non-M with an open diff.

My F80 does great in the snow! Just stays parked and gets buried while I drive my E70 haha. I did have dedicated winters for my E90 (XHP to RWD) and it was totally fine.

As everyone has mentioned, it's all about the tires.
This year where I live in Canada we have had a lot of snow and melt so it's been very icy. I'd be a bit concerned if I was using an "all weather" tire. But with the set of winters I have on its been a non factor. Traction control kicks in a lot but it does a good job of keeping the car moving. The car it self is very capable and predictable though. And as others have also mentioned, it can be a lot of fun too! Haha |

Me this morning in NY.
You’ll be fine with snow tires. I’m running Blizzaks. • keep a full tank of gas for weight on the rear wheels for grip • put something heavy in the trunk for more weight if you feel you need more grip • take off at red lights and dead stops in 2nd gear ( less torque, less sideways )

I was pleasantly surprised by the Contis this morning.. no issues and they even handled an emergency braking I had to do when someone else pulled out into the road unexpectedly. Definitely not as good as dedicated snows but much better than I thought.

I originally had a set of Toyo Celsius snows, and they were horrible. Okay traction in the snow...but really bad on just wet roads.
Swapped them to MPA5's this year - and it's a much, much better. Don't even need to shovel to get out of the driveway now.

This was my first winter with a RWD car. I had absolutely no issues on the road when it came to traction. I was more worried about ground clearance because of the piled up ice chunks. I have a squared set of Continental ContiWinterContact (255/35/19). My biggest tips are dedicated winter tires and turning DSC off. You'll be able to get the car moving if you have full power/torque. You don't want any nannies kicking in when you are trying to go.
That being said, drive safely, of course.

I have the same tire on my f82, went through 2 winters with snow without issue. Last year drove back from NY to RI with no issue going 70+ while the road is getting blasted with snow. I had the same tire on my previous f32 440i no issue as well. It's a really good set of all season tires for northeast, only snow 1-2 times a year, not a big deal.

What is this "snow" you speak of?

It’s fun to drive when you want to have fun and completely normal otherwise. As long as you have the right tires and avoid boost, the car is no less manageable than any other commuter car. Drives me crazy that so many people go around saying this car isn’t drivable in the snow. It’s such a crock of shit. I got 500+ to the wheels and have zero issues. Just keep it in efficient or sport. Sport plus is a different story. I got Michelin Pilot Alpin 5s and it drives like a dream.

My car, equipped with Michelin pilot sport + summer tires intended for Florida’s climate where I originally purchased the vehicle, is currently in my garage in New Hampshire. It is, without a doubt, the worst car I’ve driven in snow conditions. However, I must note that I have not yet switched to snow tires for this vehicle, so I cannot confirm if it would perform better. Nonetheless, I believe my 911 handles snow more effectively due to the weight distribution over the wheels.
I drive my MS G500 in the winter up here. |

get winters for it if you really want to see if it works in the winter I would also contend that that is not the best tire in the summer either - the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S is considerably better for traction
