F8X M3/M4 Macht Schnell wheel spacer reference thread

One of the first things that can really enhance the appearance of your new M3 are spacers. Not only can they be aesthetically pleasing, but the added track width can improve handling characteristics as well. Often the question of "what size spacers can I run" is brought up numerous times on the forums. This can be a bit of a loaded question since there are many variables to account for.

This thread will serve as a reference to help make their decision based on the above criteria.

Examples
- Wheel choice (OEM 18", 19" or 20")
- Tire choice
- Suspension
- Driving habits/track use
- Aesthetic preference

Pre-Installation

There's a bit more to installing spacers than yanking the wheels off and sandwiching them between the wheels. Here's how to determine what kit is needed.

The outermost point of your tire/wheel combo will be at the outermost "bulge" of your tire's sidewall. Using a straightedge or ruler flush with both the top and bottom of the tire - measure the clearance from the outer face of the tire to the inner lip of your fender and record the results onto paper for later.

We can gauge the clearance using a tape measure:

1. Begin by jacking up the vehicle and securing with jackstands. Remove wheel and clean hub of all dirt and/or surface rush with a wire wheel to ensure a clean and flush mounting surface, eliminating the chance of vibration:

2. A small amount of anti-sieze on the hub lip will make spacer removal easier if needed

3. Extended lugs must be used and are included with all Macht Schnell spacer kits and cannot be carried over from E9X chassis. Secure wheel with new fasteners and torque to 103ft lbs, reinspecting after 50 miles.

Reference

OEM Wheel Specs

18" Style 513M
Wheels: 18x9.0 Front (ET29) 18x10.0 Rear (ET40)
Tires: 18": Michelin Super Sport/Continental ContiSportContact 3: 255/40-18F, 275/40-18R

19" Style 437M
Wheels: 19x9.0 Front (ET29) 19x10.0 Rear (ET40)
Tires: 19": Michelin Super Sport/Continental ContiSportContact 3: 255/35-19F, 275/35-19R

20" Style 666M
Wheels: 20x9.0 Front (ET29) 20x10.0 Rear (ET40)
Tires: 20": Michelin Super Sport/Continental ContiSportContact 3: 265/30-20F, 285/30-20R

Installation

Tools needed
Electric/Pneumatic Impact Gun
17mm Deepwell Socket
Wire Wheel/Brush
Anti-Sieze
Torque Wrench

1. With vehicle securely on jackstands, remove wheel

2. Clean both hub surface/lip and back of wheel with wire brush to remove any surface rust

3. Brush light coat of anti-sieze onto hub lip to aid in easier removal later on

4. Install spacer onto wheel hub and line up with lug holes

5. Reinstall wheel

6. Lightly cinch provided longer wheel lugs with electric impact, DO NOT TORQUE INTO PLACE. Final torque will be applied with torque wrench.

7. Remove jackstands and lower vehicle. Torque wheel lugs with torque wrench to 103ft.lbs. with wheels on ground

8. Admire your handywork. Enjoy! Be sure to re-torque after 50 miles.

Tom, did Josh have spacers put on his F80 M3 today? If so, what sizes? I'll be down there to slap some on mine - as usual - once I get my car.

Just posted - Josh went 20mm square, but its very aggressive and will likely rub on cornering on lowered suspension setups.

More M3s coming in next week!

F-chassis uses a 14mm stud, it will need to be replaced.

Which F-chassis uses the 14? The F30 or F8X? I guess I'll sell the kit off my 335i if it can't be used.

Forgot about your F30! Your current lugs will work, not a problem.

Just took delivery of M4. It needs spacers more than a drop. Really needs spacers. Will follow this thread.

Stupid question: in order to get the same look as 20mm spacers, would one order custom wheels with ET9 & ET 20 or ET 49 & ET60?

Would be hard to find a ET60 wheel. Keeping the thread M3/M4 related to eliminate confusion, or please PM me directly.

Is it going to work on a M4 without CCB but same spec? Or 20/20mm or 15/15mm?

So spacers appear to be a pretty popular mod on the M3's. Most seem to maintain that the wheel wells have a better look with some amount of space taken up to fill in the gap. Here's my question- if it looks better, and it offers some minimal handling improvement, why are the cars not engineered that way? Is there a DOT rule or some sort of benchmark they need to adhere to? Or are they designed with the stock gaps because that is the geometry that the engineers at BMW found work best? Cause if it's the first, I'm interested in doing this to my ride. If it's the latter, I would be inclined to stick with what the engineers intended.

Second part of my question- at what point on the m3 with stock 19" wheels will you start having debris fly up and soil your car? My highly modified wrangler 35's stick out about 2" past my fenders and tho it looks cool, it's a pita to keep clean! I would want full fender coverage on my m3 and will want the tires to look stock- only with a subtle improvement. Thinking 20mm may be overly aggressive with my goal in mind.

All vehicles are engineered to satisfy a number of needs: From perfectly flat roads to harsh winters (and everything in between). Spacers have been used for years (not only BMW), BMW uses them on the M3 GT4. Even Porsche offers them as a factory part.

Pushing the rubber outwards will always run this risk. While no one will be running 2" thick spacers on a BMW, less aggressive thicknesses will keep more fender over the tire.

To add to Tom's post, these cars must be able to use snow chains in the winter in Germany. That means the offsets cannot be so extreme from the factory as to cause any issues once the cars are equipped with the chains.
