Well the Focus RS is coming if that piques your interest although I don't know if a $40k car is a winter beater.

RWD is fine in the winters I'm used to with good winter tires and common sense, not sure about in Wisconsin though.

Thanks Matt! the Focus RS is actually the perfect winter car for me. Although i'm not dropping $40k on a winter car... perhaps in a few years a used one will be more reasonable.

I've driven my e46 M3 a few of the winters I had it and that worked well so I think I'm going to plan to pickup the BMW tire set for the M4.

Does anyone know?
If you purchased the tire and wheel protection from your dealer when you first leased/bought your car, then you got the BMW winter wheels and tires (either 640m or 641m); does that protection also cover the winter package or no?

Yes it does. From my dealer. I purchased the 19" OEM set with Nokian R2 winter tires.

So has anyone gone for the 8.5X18 square setup?

running the wheel offset calculator here is what happens on the rear going from 9" 29 offset to 8.5" 27 offset

Inner Clearance: actually 8mm MORE
Position: retracts by 4mm

so it seems the only downside is that its retracted by 4mm which is 0.16 inches, I would think no one would notice that.

I'm waiting on my 8.5x18 square setup to be shipped:http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/Wheel...re=54VR8LM32XL

I did previously order Blizzaks LM-32s in 255/45/18 squared setup. I'm hoping these fit. Can anyone confirm that 255/45/18 fit on the f80 with a 8.5x18 squared wheel setup? That'd be greatly appreciated!

Just ordered the 640M and continental tires. I have the 19" OEM wheels currently. Does anyone know if the change in tires will have a reasonable impact on the speedometer reading? By reasonable, I mean 0.5 mph or more difference?

Always follow what it says on the driver side door plate. Should be 32psi regardless of your setup.

I drive A LOT in MT winter...which means lots of snow. Currently driving 335 but getting M3 as a DD. While I recognize many may cringe at the thought of taking our your M3 in snow, I for one, look forward to it.

For serious winter driving, a square set up is the best followed by the narrowest tire possible. Ive driven all sorts of winter tires and found the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2s to be, by far, the best.

Has anyone tried the F30 rims such as the 8.5x18" 400M or 441 running 225/50 on their M3?

PS - Im not concerned how they may look. Im just after the best winter snow traction performance and dont want to go to the common 255 square setup if I can avoid it.

That is not an accurate statement.

Pressures do vary depending on setup. According to the M3/4 owner's manual (for speeds below 160km/h / 100mph):

Summer 255/275 on either 18 or 19: 31psi front / 31psi rear
Winter 255/255 on 18" wheels: 31psi front / 33psi rear
Winter 255/255 on 19" wheels: 34psi front / 37psi rear

I found set of 400M for sale and almost jumped (same thinking like yours - practicality)

But here on this forum I found topic about them. They don't clear M brakes. So no.. I ended up ordering BBS RS wheels from tirerack + 245/45/18 tires

Thanks for that, what's interesting is the sticker on my door say 32/32 which is where I kept the 255/275 summers. The 1 psi difference between the manual and sticker is a wash for me, meh it's close enough for me Plus my tire pressure gauge has a +/- 1% accuracy.

I checked my 255 square winter setup and the pressure is in-deed 34/37 at the tires.

I also have that discrepancy with the door jamb sticker at 32psi. Go figure .

My point was more about adapting pressure depending on setup

@ my dealer today. 18inches. Impressive how they are quiet in comparison of 666M & PSS.

The new M4/M3 winter wheels are staggered. Here are the specs:

- 640M (8,5x18 + 9x18) OR
- 641M (8,5x19 + 9x19)

The front wheel is 8.5" and rear is wheel 9" minor difference, both run the same tires.

Great pic, BTW !
