Giving up on JB4 stage 3 Install

Hi All,

As you might have seen, I recently picked up my MW/SO F80. First thing on the list after all the factory and dealer installed extras was of course the BMS JB4.

While not really fun, I managed to get through the installation of stage 1 and 2. The only part that I needed to remove in order to make the installation (besides various covers etc) was the intercooler water reservoir. Co0nnecting the TMAP was obviously no problem. Unplugging the MAP connector proofed more difficult and I ended up creating a little tool from a wire hanger. With this thing, it took me 10 seconds, highly recommended for any install.

Stage 2 was a breeze and with these first two parts done, I took the car out for a spin and as you might have read, ended up blowing of the exit charge pipe form the intercooler because the clamp apparently wasn't tightened too well.

One week later, I wanted to move on to stage 3 today. It requires a lot more disassembly to get to the fuel mass connector. Strut brace, intercooler reservoir, left air filter box, engine cover, both ingoing charge pipes to get the underlying cover off and then you still have to turn the stupid sensor around because in most cars, the clamp for the plug is on the underside.

Sorry guys, but this is PAINFUL!!!! I didn't want to completely remove the charge pipes so I wasn't able to take off the underlying cover. Also the intercooler reservoir can only be pushed aside, removing would be a major act. Not only did I give up after two hours and heavy bruising of my hands, when reassembling everything, I broke one of the connector clamps for the charge pipes. Replaced that and reassembled everything and after three hours of nothing, I am back to just stage 2. Any volunteers who want to take care of stage 3 for me ;-)

Have you watched the JB4 install video on YouTube? The only real PITA I agree is the fuel mass connector due to the clip being upside down and fitting your hand back there, but the EWG wires is simply removing the strut brace and air box then it's a plug of those 2 wires not sure why you had to jack with the charge pipes.

i was able to do stage 3 install without waste gage without any disassembly only a small flat head driver. I'm close to you (miramar) if you still need help i can swing by and take a swing at it. on my car the sensor was almost facing up so i think i got lucky.

YA the Mass Fuel Sensor is the hardest part and we normally recommend not installing teh EWG connectors unless you are going to run map6/7.

Hire a pro. That's what I did. Best couple hours of labor I have ever spent.

Wow, I removed the CF brace, installed all connections, routed USB and neatly tucked cabling, removed carbon air filters in roughly 45 minutes while kinda bullshitting at the same time.

I used a ratchet and two sized screw drivers.

The vid does help a lot, while following the PDF.

I forgot to include the OBDII install in there.

I have never installed a JB before, either. I am familiar with how those types of connectors work, and running wire through grommets.

I never once had an issue. I moved the reservoir upward, lent over from the passenger side, reached in and simply unclipped the fuel mass in seconds, i actually find the t map under the reservoir harder tbh. I have huge forearms aswell. If i can get hold of an M4 to show you guys ill take a few pics of how i get in there.

We've never removed anything completely to install it. We remove the upper reservoir and use a wrench to loosen the fitting on the end of the rail, spin it, remove the connector , plug it in and viola. I do hate how short the harness is to the tmap though, we try and run the wires to hide it as much as possible and the lower map sensor is always very tight.

The install is a pain, but totally doable. It's just running and connecting cables, most of which can be concealed after your are done.

I just followed the instructions and took my time. Took longer than I would have liked, mostly just because there are some hard to reach places.

... and no offense to the manufacturers of my other mod components, but the JB4 working with the Connect Kit and Mobile Ap are just the coolest thing ever.

+1

Takes some time but the key is to spin the sensor around so you can access the clip. You will get a few drops of gas which is normal as well.

Why can't you be a little more sensitive?

I admit... I did disconnect that one hose and spilled a little green coolant crap, but I've had far worse accidents taking things apart (at work and home)!

On a good note, lifted up my trunk floor today and discovered a cargo net packaged in there. Who would have known?
