I’ve just stumbled across this post so thought I’d wake it up again, I sold my F80 DCT 6 months ago, I’ve just brought a manual 340,i last week I had the MPPSK fitted, the M3 is a tame animal that’s waiting to unleash hell, it’s awesome, BUT the harsh ride, the aggressiveness and the auto box (my biggest bug bear) got to me after 3 years.

I absolutely love the 340i, so smooth, powerful, quiet, and the MPPSK gives the best of both worlds, I couldn’t be happier, my M3 was fully loaded and I do miss the surround view, lane assist and other options but I’m really happy, hopefully I’m not the only convert, be interesting to see if others have done the same.

I am sure you are the exception and not the norm. Well there was that one guy who got roasted trying to convince everyone his new m340i was a superior car to the F8xs. His SN was m3driver or some shit like that.

I think that’s fair, no doubt the 340 is a better daily. I think a lot of people have gotten into Ms without realizing what they were signing up for and are ultimately would have been more happy with a regular BMW. A big part of it is the whole “M car” clout that people chase or are talked up about which blinds them from seeing that a “normal” BMW is the better choice for their intended use. Not saying any of that is you specifically, more that a large portion of F8X owners are casual types who are only in them because it’s an “M car” and not the right car.

i went from an f30 335 to an M3. never looked back. it feels like a completely different car.

as for daily drivability i'd still prefer the f80. The non-M cars just fall on their face when you try to push them hard. Like bad. The rwd cars dont have a diff and the awd cars are very very heavy. have inferior suspension, chassis, and brakes. like 38-3900 pounds heavy.

For me its worth the trade off in comfort to have a car that actually behaves like a sports car when you want it to. fwiw i dumped my 335i after 9 months and have had my f80 for 2 years+

I was the opposite of you. Came from a 340i M Sport with the Track Handling package. I didn't have lane assist in either my 340i or any of my F80's so that's not a selling point for me. It's funny that you didn't like the harsh ride. I kept my 340i stock but I thought the suspension wasn't nearly as aggressive as I wanted it. If I had gotten a more aggressive suspension, the advantage of the 340i being not as harsh would be moot. I didn't have time to find out though, because after buying it new, I sold it after 3 months, took a bath, and got an F80. No regrets. Out of the box I STILL got aftermarket suspension on the F80, so obviously the softness and civility of 340i just wasn't for me.

I’m toying with monoballing the suspension on my street gas car to get as much responsiveness as possible so you and I definitely have a different POV on what’s an acceptable ride comfort and nvh

A 340 on 19 inch rims vs m3 on 19 inch rims really doesn't ride all that different. Like it's noticeable but I'd say the handling on a f80 is a 8/10 with a 3/10 on the f30 (the f30 handles like absolute dogshit) and the ride may be a 6/10 on a 340 at best and 4/10 on the m3. I'm sure 20 inch 666m are worse, but I've ridden in a f30 340 and F8x extensively with varying wheel sizes. Apart from that theres zero reason to get an f30, except awd, and marginal suspension improvement. F30's ride mediocre , on the 19 inch setup especially

My F80 on comfort with 19” wheels was much harder with excessive road noise, compared to my 340i Msport ,the cold weather certainly made it worse.

Don’t get me wrong I loved the F80, but here in the Uk winter and rain (most days it rains) it did feel pointless, maybe in a couple of years I might go back to a manual F80

What did you expect? An F80 to be smoother/softer than a 340i? They are 2 completely different animals and it seems you made the right choice for you.

A 6MT F80 on OEM 18's and performance all Season is damn near perfect balance.

I was in bumper to bumper traffic the other day for about 20 minutes; I felt like I was in an EV; until traffic cleared lol🦅

Agreed. Mine was dct with passive suspension and 18s and it was comfier and my wife’s f30 335 with 19s RFT

I'm in Connecticut it's 28 degrees today; snow and freezing temps. It's perfect.

Last few weeks it's been light snow, temps below 40 degrees.

I don't hammer the car below 50 mph anyway...

Even when I had the Michelin Sports on, the suspension is so firm you would lose contact with the road surface. It's not so much the tires ability to grip,
But the suspension losing contact with the road.

I had a hwy pull with the Continental DWS 06 at 70 mph against an older C63 and I hooked up no problem. Pulled him nicely 🦅win!

All out summers are good for temps above 50 degrees my experience anyway.

This is a massive misconception. Traction control fully off on extreme contact dws06 I can floor it from 30 mph and upwards at any temperature, even 20 degrees and the car will stick like it's AWD. I don't mind posting a video cause so many people think like you.

In rain & at all temps the car sticks just like summers in a straight line. Summer tires are only really good at straight line hooking when you're above 70 degrees and the tires are really warmed up, then you can launch, maybe.

But yeah when it comes to cornering summers are a lot better with stiffer sidewalls

On my summer tires I'd be doing a rolling burnout any temp under 60 degrees, under 60 mph which is expected, making all seasons really useful in NYC

The high performance all season tires coming out nowadays are really good, but under heavy cornering you need summer tires, I put PS4S on in the summer.

I had an upgraded 2013 F30 335i 6sp MT with M everything that I bought new in 2012. I wanted a 4 door and it was in between model years. It was one of the first msports and I paid out the nose for it, when you added up everything. I came from a plain E46 325i 5 sp MT and while the power of the 335i was impressive, the car felt floaty in the suspension and stirring - it just did not drive like a BMW to me. The E46 was a better driver. In 2018 I got my present car and I cannot believe the difference. It has everything and I was able to get a deal on the M3 so it actually cost about the same. However the car is just a beast and light years away from the msports and Mxxxs BMW is diluting the brand with. Anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves or doesn’t like the way a BMW is supposed to drive. The later could be the case - that E46 stock suspension was much stiffer than the “upgraded” suspension that came on the F30. Any time I drive a loaner base model - got the summers on put today - and the new x3 they gave me drove like a Honda. No thank you.

The non M cars suck ass for any sort of performance driving.

If you want a cruiser that's boring get a 340i. If you want to have fun get an M3/4.

Also to OP who said that he misses his lane assist/spot detection blah blah from his M car when he switched to a non M. Well pretty much why you shouldn't have had an M in the first place.

I have owned my M4 over 2 years now and i don't know if i even have all those gizmos and gadgets? I don't even know what's in the car, i found out i had heated seats last week when my friend used them.

I just get in and drive, if you are the type of person to care about random features get the M performance.

I have a 2018 340i M Performance Edition. Bottom line: it's the worst car I've ever owned. It feels like a Buick. Floaty, disconnected and numb. I've had this thing for only 8 months and it's gone next week, traded for an F80 CS. Can't wait. Before the 340i I had an M2 and I don't know what I was thinking when I moved to the 340i. Thought I could do the soft boring daily. No way can't be done. It was like 8 months in prison.

M car for the raw experience. Non m are much softer and more muted but good for a quiet daily driving experience with more then moderate power.

Yes the M3 is better, but the last few people on this thread seem to be comparing a bone stock 340i to an M3... For under $4k a 340i can have 500hp and great handling. $550 for MHD tune, $350 XHP trans tune, $300 Supra TU pump and $700 for downpipe (including install), BC racing adjustable coil overs = $2k including install. Also not only is the car purchase price far less, so is the INSURANCE.
