I share your sentiment. He should enjoy the hell out of it now rather than using a selective driving approach (…e.g…at night only, no cars, a pre determined route, etc.).

Right now, from everyone I spoke to, what needs to happen is for the opponent to accept liability. Regardless if the owner of the car was actually driving (aka he lied about it being stolen) or the car was legit stolen. After I spoke with State Farm, I believe that is where this is at. State Farm is still investigating because the police report is vague (as Sedan eluded would probably happen). It doesn't really state the owner of the car was driving, or if the car was stolen unless I read the report wrong. The report only says the car has an name attached to it and it is insured by State Farm (again unless I read it wrong).

In order for me to start over (if that ends up happening...) I would need that otherwise as everyone here said, for me to keep my car and just drive it. Even the GSM brought this up today after I spoke to him in person, in private. It would be too much without diminishing value to cover the costs. I don't think I will get enough from my injury to cover anything.

From what the body shop told me, apparently my insurance is willing to go double of the initial estimate. All I know so far is, that they confirmed my frame is bent. I tried asking if they found anything else out but I think they haven't gotten that far yet just that the bent frame is very noticeable so, it is bad.

The other party will not accept liability, so that isn’t even a realistic consideration. There’s no way for the CHP to prove who was driving. The driver is essentially a ghost, and the owner of the car isn’t going to accept any type of liability whatsoever (…and that would be the case if it were you, me or anybody else and our vehicle was stolen and involved in a collision).

What was the estimate for damages thus far? The fact the insurance stated they are willing to double the payout indicates that even double the estimate isn’t nearly close enough for a total loss. The value of your car is working against you in this situation.

Yeah, I don't know it is what I been told. Though on the conversation, the value claim would help a lot if opponent accept it but again I don't know how that would go or if State Farm will be okay with it. Maybe State Farm will be nice, maybe they won't, I don't know really everyone is just guessing. If they don't and I cannot get nearly as much out of this, then keeping my car with the damage is pretty much my only option.

If my memory isn't messing with me, I think they told me they are willing to go up to 160k. I have to wait still so.

Edit: I can only hope for the best because that is all I can do, aside State Farm on it.

What was the damage estimate you were provided as of now?

The first initial estimate, was around 70k before they got into anything. However, as I spoke to the shop they already noted it was missing things already. They have to go back and forth with State Farm on that. This is before the frame damage and I don't think they have done anything else. Since the body shop fast tracked the frame measuring (because I asked).

That initial talk, the shop said State Farm is already ready to go double and up to (I want to say I heard right) $160k because, as the shop guy put it, it almost always ends up being the case. Since my car counts as an exotic, and other steps are involved they are prepared for it. meaning my car being at Porsche DTLA, them doing their things, etc etc.

I am getting ahead of myself though. First what State Farm says then go from there.

and btw, I get your point of view it makes sense. It is far more realistic, which I am mentally prepared for to not get nearly as much out of this whole fucking fiasco of this.

It is just god damn annoying you know? You probably know by now something else happened to someone (I won't say who since it isn't my news to share) so just on that... I am just shaking my head right now. Glad he is okay but good lord these drivers are insane.

I couldn't, it would be one or the other. I'd buy the 911 without a second thought, higher tier car and isn't going to lose a massive amount of money in the next 3+ years.

Yes, I’m aware of the other situation. This is par for the course these days. So many bad drivers, unlicensed drivers, and drivers with suspended/revoked licenses running around.

Well I was gonna wait until next week until I get everything sorted out. I was hit by a car last week. Hit and Run. This is the 2nd time in the last couple years. Last year, an unlicensed teenage driver uninsured was joy riding with his under aged buddies. It is what it is. I just move on and get back on my feet. Most importantly, I am still here, the car is replaceable. I sold my CGTS and did not lose much with the minor accident. @arcades you need to decide if you're gonna keep and drive your car. If you're not happy with it sell it.

Geezus you guys, very sorry to hear mzcp and the continued PIA for you Arcades. We obviously have crazy drivers here, but the shear number you must have in So Cal has to be nuts. I usually have to look out for animals more than other drivers generally.

I have very small news, tried to go back to BMW today, but they have a stop sale on the X5s. Hopefully it isnt a bad omen.

I don’t know how you guys do it. My sister still lives near downtown Sacramento and it’s nuts out there. Can’t imagine it in the L.A. area, definitely the Wild West for a different reason.

Again, sorry, hope you are ok and you get a good resolution in the end with your car.

I think it might be safer to drive in the canyon lol. Freeway is terrible, local street is worse IMO.

I very much regret not putting my BlackVue back on my car. I just... never got around to it... I have the 900S, front and back. I removed it when I sold my M3, I never got around to reinstalling it on either my GT4 or my 4RS. Couldn't find a mount for it.

Sigh.

mzcp I am leaning to keeping my car, despite everything. It all depends now on if/how much diminishing value I can get out of this that would, maybe allow me to start over. My name is back on their computers for 4RS allocation just as a backup for now.

Nothing real exciting, a nicely equipped X5 XD 40i. Have to admit, I was very impressed after a test drive. Was surprised how much power it had for being the base car. Also was very impressed with comfort etc inside. Still not a fan of the digital gauges etc, but it’ll mainly be the wife’s ride, but I’m sure I won’t mind driving it to.

Anyone have experience with the Volvo XC90? They are damn good looking even if long in the tooth and could be a replacement for Mom's Discovery. I can also pick it up over there and drive it to my BMW Winter Driving in February.

The mild hybrid B58 in the 2023+ X7 is powerful enough that a 2023 X7 xDrive40i can do a 0-60 pull in effectively the same time as the 2022 X7 M50i. I imagine it's a similar situation for the X5.

I drove one across the country in 2019. It's fine, but the X5 is far superior and the best SUV in its segment.

I, too, love the X5. It would be my go-to SAV if I ever decided to purchase another one. I have owned two; one was a modded X5 back in 2014, but I ended up selling it to get into the F30 335i. It had the OEM X5M bumpers/fenders, the Vorsteiner carbon fiber front lip, etc.
