M3/M4 vs. Tesla Model 3 Performance

It sounds like it is going to kick the F80/F82 behind. Elon is saying the 0-60 number will be 3.3s... pretty badass but not my cup of tea. I hope the next M3/M4 will be in low to mid 3's.

Yeah, I think it will be a much better straight line car and it may even be a fun little autoX/track car they may have the potential to beat the M3. The only thing is that it will not be able to taking a full day of track/autoX beating like the M3. Mostly because of fuel vs electricity, and, more importantly, cooling. Tesla hasn't figured out yet how to stop them from overheating at the track like BMW has with the M3. Yes, yes, I have seen the video of the guy who took his model 3 to the track in Cali. But he only ran a few laps, said his battery drained quickly, and that it went into limp mode in the afternoon to protect the battery and drivetrain.

However, I will say, that once companies like Tesla or BMW figure out the cooling issues on these EVs they are going to be really fun to drive in canyons or on the track. You'll just have to be okay with no manual and no exhaust madness.

It will take solid state batteries. Not touching electric cars until then, they will make all previous models obsolete. Lighter, more capacity, faster charging.

Tesla have good battery technology but the cars are let down by poor engineering and quality control. Things like broken door handles, crashed control units, seized parking brakes, etc are not indicative of a quality machine. Wouldn’t own one, myself.

I have my name down for a Porsche Taycan but this is pretty nutty. 0-60 3.1 seconds. No more eye contact with Model 3 driver at the traffic light... cannot really tell if they are driving the Performance model or not. They all look the same.

Game over if it is really doing 0-60 in 3.15s. It looks like the handling is pretty good also. Still not getting one though.

If it's doing 0-60 in 3.15 seconds then it has at least 600hp. Will obviously handle well because of the low battery and dual motor setup- better than any mid engine car. No idea how it's going to be perform on a track. Game over indeed.

Once you can get fast charging at the track to get enough juice between the runs, then its game over, assuming cooling is solved. Until then, keep your gasoline track car. I got to say that the VW pikes peak electric car is quite bad ass, and I would love to take it for a spin.

I have a F82 and the only reason I pick it over the 991.1 GTS because my wife wants the car to sit four relatively comfortable. I also like the handling of Alfa G Quad better than the F80, but not sure about its long-term reliability. F80/F82 is a good compromise, especially as I was able to grab a used one pretty cheap.

Frankly, I own the car for about four months and I like it ok. However, I still cannot tell what truly stands out about the car.

Isn't it a 4000lb car?

I've tracked an e63 wagon and it wasn't that fun after a few laps when the novelty wears off. Too much weight. I expect the Tesla will be the same.

A large part of it is where all that weight sits. Here, it's really really low compared to other cars. I had the opportunity to drive one a few weeks back through some twisty roads when I was back in LA visiting friends and it feels surprisingly light in the corners. Granted that's not the track, but you can feel the M5 weight even in the corners. Not saying it's going to be great, but hides its weight very well IMO

That's true. Weight is low and mid mounted.

For a street only car, it's a definite win.

On another thread someone posted their m3 Cs 0-60 of 3.4s, which is great in insolation but compares poorly to to model 3 (which is something like $30k cheaper as well). That member should have picked 1/4 mile trap speed or 0-100mph time or lap time or something else.

True. Although, the Model 3 Performance is $80k once fully loaded. But then again, the M3CS is $100k plus so you are right, haha.

I would agree, and would add that the same statement applies to the Model 3 Performance. Each has it's unique strengths, but neither is only about being quick.

I drove a regular model 3 rwd and was impressed, it drives tight like and feels lighter than it is. The acceleration was snappy and felt faster than is was as there's no lag in the power train. It's as if you're always in your powerband's sweetspot. I'm seriously considering picking one up as I might be hunkering down for b-school. Idk if a can stretch for a performance one, maybe just the awd version.

I drove the model 3 and was super impressed. Went into it skeptical, but came away very impressed. Those in this thread bashing it are doing so not even having driven one. Tesla is winning.

I'd try to get the performance one it's like getting a 335 instead of an m3.

Go Base rwd or performance awd, not in the middle
