My 2 cents is, the largest selling luxury SUV within 3 years will be the Porsche Macan EV. Porsche is building a stable of EVs that amplify & extend their brand while BMW is attempting a wholesale brand shift to a new market.

The trick is, the existing and prior X designs - and sales - are from the old customer ... this means either BMW must pick up entirely new customers to replace existing and/or convert existing.

Ironically, BMW likely has the right strategy - they have to bring in today's 16 year olds - but the wrong tactics (k00koo design)

Said differently ...

* Let's say you were 16 in 1990 ...
* Then you were born right about the time Bob Lutz invented "The Ultimate Driving Maching" slogan ...
* And you were ~12 when the M3 came out ...
* Which means if you were into cars you had an M3 poster ...
* Which means in your mid-20s you tried to buy, or bought, some type of BMW ...
* Which means by the time you were 30s, you finally had an M3 of your own ...

If you take a car kid who's 16 today what posters are on his wall? Who & what is the breakout new hotness?

It's highly likely BMW has realized they have to get back on that wall - they have to become the new hotness, but the question is how?

Apparently their answer is the G8x & this X///M

Unfortunately the large majority of kids today don't really care about cars. They seem more interested in gaming, etc. The number of 18 and 19 year olds that have yet to even attempt to get their drivers licenses is astounding. It's funny you mentioned 1990. I was 15 years old in 1990 and got my permit the day of my 16th birthday in 1991. I had my license 2 months later. I think there is a lot at play today...more distractions from social media and online gaming and sadly, inflation and the supply shortage has made buying a used vehicle "unobtainium" for many kids. Throw in ride sharing and Uber/Lyft options and, well you get the idea. Kids would rather spend their time and money elsewhere since they have alternative transportation options. We have done a poor job of promoting automotive enthusiasm amongst this younger generation unfortunately.

I agree with this sentiment, but there are still enough of them out there who are involved in cars enough to promote/facilitate takeovers, illegal races, etc. They may not care about visceral experiences as much, but then again, I'm seeing the same change(s) in the old guard as well.

I would’ve been on board and ready to put a deposit down if they just went with this. Would’ve saved them a bunch of $$$ to. Underrated movie IMO.

If you are going to be putting a G8x or XM on your wall or computer screen.

I literally don't want to know you.

We get a lot of that up here

Rolex survived the Quartz Crisis with this strategy: yes, the automatic watch market is going to be devastated, but we'll be #1 in that much smaller market and eventually it'll come back

The problem is, I don't think BMW is or can be this brand ... Porsche yes, Benz yes, even Audi ... but not BMW. Speculative of course.

In the meantime, BMW is busy burning up their core ... MystroM5 who owns an M50 X7 and an M2 said of the X///M:
"If this is the new BMW design language, I am done with the BMW brand. There is no BMW heritage direction anymore and it can’t be fast enough to outrun this much ugly. BMW almost seems like their design team worked on the set of a bad reality show like “Jersey Shore” in that as long as they get a reaction (good or bad) that is all that counts."
So who replaces him? Cause if it's not >1 person then the brand is toast ... and if it is > 1 person why are so few of them here?

Said differently, if BMW is more than replacing their existing core fans they're burning with this new design language why isn't this forum overwhelmed with that (likely younger) crowd?

And if they're just not here yet, when do they get here?

Should've gone and be our spy and record on video telling one of the BMW employees "me and my boys from our 600-page forum thread hate your design, marketing and brand direction"

I'd love to see the gasps of revulsion followed by dropped jaws turning into uncomfortable mumbling evolving into awkward euphemisms: "ummm ...unique", "intriguing", and "original".

It's obvious BMW now has to shift into full-court press influencer mode: chatter, videos, posts, and 'grams: "X///M is super cool you guys!" ... prolly a few celeb endorsements ... expect ballers to drive around freebies.

Buckle up!

Very interesting concept. Honestly I really wish VAG would let Audi have some fun and make a really cool car or just better cars, they just always feel like they are lacking something, whether its the platform, driving dynamics, material quality etc. They make great looking cars with great tech, but I just don't ever find one that emotionally draws me, besides the R8 of course which is mainly a Lambo in drag. Maybe an RS6? But the platform of that cars still annoys me.

Audi I feel is just stuck in the middle as always. Can't overstep its boundaries into Porsche (E-Tron GT was one try but the sales have been abysmal) and has to borrow too much from regular VW which only hurts the cars.

Maybe EV's will breath some new life into Audi? They'll finally be able to break free from their front-drive and front-heavy nature and focus more on dynamics? Hopefully the upcoming Q6 E-Tron, which will share many parts with the Macan EV will signal Audi into a new and better era.

They had NAS rapping 90s hits at the premiere lol
This shows that the Marketing team is clueless as i doubt many teenagers know who NAS even is or ever heard his music.

BTW it was good to see NAS back - i haven’t seen him in anything for over 10yrs.

I've honestly lost the spark for the brand which is why I've not been so active lately.

Like I adored the M3 when I grew up. It was THE car to have and I'm really glad I've gotten the chance to buy and own my very own M and last but not least the best looking one at that.

After the constant shit show up in this forum, the general direction and how dismissive and brain dead the company seems to be, I've just felt disconnected from the enthusiast side in general, which is really unfortunate.

It's started snowing so I've parked my car for the season too which means I'm even further disconnected from it but hopefully the spark comes back when the snow and ice melts and I bring it out from the garage again.

It just feels bad being an ///M fan, because it's a joke and a clown show 🤡 right now and every time I see news it's a god damn monstrosity shitting on the legacy I've grown up to love…

Damn…
