I was watching an old NCIS episode and suddenly ... CRASHED E92 M3!
And given that E92 - crashed - still looks fan-fucking-tastic (and 1000x better than the new M4 not crashed), I'm just left wondering: geezus BMW what the fuck happened to you?? |

The engineers and thought leaders in that video like Biermann embody the spirit of Motorsports. Too bad they are all gone and the result is the G80. BMW M will have a long ways to go if they ever want to come back to the glory days. With electrification around the corner, I don't think we'll ever see the M we all knew and loved. Better hold unto your F8Xs fellas. I doubt there will ever be a more true M car going forward.

Went out to the dealers today. It may not be an M, but I found the perfect side by side. We have beauty, and the beast. One is timeless, and includes many historic design elements, the other is just a Lexus/Audi mishmash. The new design direction is horrid, not only compared to its predecessor, but also its competition.

With pressure on margins, BMW is focusing on the demographics. They are definitely focused on millennials and post millennials, as this will form the basis on their revenue pools in the coming years. Not surprising that we see this youthful, Apple styled, lifestyle focused ads across all the new launches? Makes sense now? That still doesn’t excuse the bad design choices. I know that BMW likes to think that they lead the charge in design, but in this case, its a situation of going a little too far. My thing is in a highly competitive market where substitutes abound: what has made BMW standout and build a moat is their combination of driver dynamics first, coupled with a dash of luxury and classy designs to build their brand and their moat. Now? They only have luxury left of the 3 categories. I think they have driver dynamics still in the bag, so make that 2, but that is slowly being eroded. It almost seems like that they are becoming what Merc was in the 2000s, big engine powerful straight line cars. Is that the right direction? The pressure on revenue and margins here is probably having an effect on driver dynamics are they use base platforms and cut costs on bespoke Motorsport designs (I remember Biermann in one of the Motoman interviews where he complains about budgeting as a pain in BMW). In the meantime, I think the other brands (especially, Ford and GM) have caught up. You can't say now, unequivocally, that a GT350/500, CTS V, Blackwing etc. is objectively worse in handling. To add insult to injury, I would even say that they have caught up in suspension technology (more compliance while still allowing one to be a hooligan). That to me is why we’re all complaining about what we see coming out of Munich. It will be interesting to watch and it will be a long movie. The brand I respected feels like its changing and diluting. That said, the new M3/M4 should be a clear signal to all of us old timers here; I’ve always considered them ‘halo’ cars for BMW. It signals the thinking. Defenders of what we cherished- Biermann, et.al have left and hopefully their disciples are still there to carry the flag. All this will take years, maybe decades to play out. Am I willing to pay the price of admission to watch more movies from BMW? No, I’ll probably hang out on the side or go to a different movie theater. I'll hang on to my F80 for a long time and enjoy it, glad that I got 'peak M'. EDIT: https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...8/10best-2021/ (Not a single BMW in sight and no, I don't consider the Supra a BMW) https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...21-contenders/ (Some BMWs here, but listen to the comments on driving dynamics- worrying). Boys, we've been to the top of the mountain and it's all downhill from here. Peak BMW social media saviness right here:

What am I missing?
I'm no fan of the new G8x grille. But I think BMW might actually be late to the game here. Audi, Lexus, and now Genesis are all doing it.

The biggest irony of all is BMW already had the most recognizable signature grille styling of all the German and Japanese marques and then they decided to copy the competition when all along, the competition was trying define itself like BMW has managed to do for 100 years. It's like one day Mercedes decided give up on the three pointed star and make their emblem a big ass MB.

But in this case BMW let Brilliance design most of the car for the Chinese market (i'm reasonably speculating) and the Bavarians are hoping they can leverage their brand strength to carry the design through in the rest of their global markets ... Who knows, we may be the outliers who don't like it and BMW will attract enough new buyers to make it worth it - there's a decent % of old-timers like Sedan_Clan who legit like the new ginormous grille so it might work.

Yeah, I think it's just getting to be too much and it takes away from the rest of the car. It's like a big wart now. It's partly the size but the shape just doesn't seem to flow well or look aero with the rest of the body lines. |
