I'm going to assume that Drew your M4 is tuned Where did you take yours to get serviced?

Damn I heard this clicking sound on many occasions before starting the car on my brand new 2018. I thought it was normal but I guess not..

There aren't any other issues other than annoyance that I'm aware of, but somebody more familiar with this part may be able to speak on whether there could be issues down the road. From threads I have read, I don't believe so, but it has to be serving a purpose so better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks for this post. I also get the same issue. It’s intermittent and starts as soon as I open a door or the boot (trunk as you guys say in the US). Today I filmed it.
The clicking started as soon as I opened the door. I hadn’t started the car.

The clicking continued for maybe one minute and stopped.

I then locked and reopened the car – once again the clicking started. I have posted a video on YouTube. I will send a link to my dealer and note that someone else had a similar issue which was caused by the valvetronic motor.
Here is a link to the video

Folks,

Here is an update. My dealer raised a PUMA case & sent the video to BMW. BMW in turn asked them to do some checks including taking the valvetronic motor out.

They ended up replacing the motor. I asked how long this took. I was advised it's around 9 hours to take the part out and 9 hours to fix. The car is just a few months old so all was covered by warranty.

My dealer gave me a loan. X3 for a few days and I was kept updated throughout the process.

It's good to be back in my M4 now :-)

I'm not following on why the replaced the motor unless you are talking about just the valvetronic motor? Seems to be a bit extreme unless they found something else?

I just had this issue for the first time in over a year. I caught it on video/audio. I'm contemplating getting it fixed. What gives me pause is since the issue is extremely intermittent then how will I know of the fix they preformed actually worked.

But then again I want a history of paperwork on it so I don't get hit with this out of warranty.

I guess I'll have them repair it and hope they don't break something else. It seems like a pretty invasive repair judging only by the pictures.

I have this as well - only from time to time. '17 w/ 2k miles

Guess if you can get it fixed under warranty, why not? Good excuse to thrash a loaner for a day.

Thanks for this post - I noticed this on my '18 with under 1k mi and wasn't sure if it was normal as well. I shot a video clip of it to capture the sound, since like you said - it's intermittent, and will mention to my SA when I bring it in for the break in service.

Update:

For those who've had this and gotten it resolved, any notes from your service tech that I can give to mine? Have the same issue and sent them a video clip of the sound after reading this thread and encountering it again. They claim they can't reproduce?

Would PUMA case info for reference be helpful?

I am MY2018 M3 with 2000 miles on meter, same issue occurred after long time parking and I recorded the sound clips. last two weeks I bring the car to my dealer and provide the sound clip, but after two weeks, dealer said they didn’t duplicate the clicking sound, just report PUMA case to BMW. And BMW told them no need take any action.
Yesterday, the clicking noise occurred again after I open the driver and passenger doors Anyone knows what should I do? Continue to contact dealer???or report to BMW????

My (now ex-)dealer closed it out 2x saying they couldn't reproduce and it was "normal" for the car's systems to make noise when activating/shutting down despite me giving them a video of the clicking sound. After the second time they had the car for 4 days, they admitted when I picked it up that they couldn't even open the video, so hadn't used it in their diagnosis! I sent it to BMW USA along with a whole list of complaints over how this dealer behaves and they're looking into it.

It’s at least 1-2 times a week. Not freaking out but I don’t want it to become an issue after it’s out of warranty if I can get it taken care of now.
