I used to use mine a lot when I was in the North East. Then I moved to the Mid-Atlantic and started using it less. Now that I am in TX / third circle of hell, I never use it and almost always leave the shade closed. There's just too much light coming off the pavement.

The increase in headroom is not inconsequential given my 6'2" height.

Add those two together and the CFRP roof makes sense.

As you stated, you like using a sunroof and prefer its function over the look of the carbon roof. So... What's the point of this thread?

The most noticeable difference is the added headroom without a sunroof. If you're not tracking your car, why even worry about the difference that it makes on the track?

The point is that I wanted know from someone who really pushed the car with and without the CFRP roof how significant the difference is or isn't in terms of handling. If it's negliable I'll likely skip the CFRP roof but I'm pretty sure I will not have the chance to drive a car with and without it back to back in a way where I will notice the difference prior to ordering it. Handling is important to me wether I'm on the track or not but the track is the easiest place to evaluate the difference, a difference that is always there.

As others have noted you will not be able to feel it nor measure it. That's based on simple ratios and percents and common sense. It is just part of a total package of weight reduction items, each contribute little but overall the effect is large.

Thank you, again that's what I suspected but we have all driven cars with roof racks and top boxes. 40 lbs on the roof can definately be felt in terms of reduced sharpness in agility and added body roll. The roof is better integrated and has less leverage but it's still the highest point of the car so I wasn't sure. It's good to hear that the consensus from everyone is that it can't be felt. Thanks again.

To those that track their E90:
If you don't have a sunroof and regulations insist that you drive with both front windows down, is there a great deal of wind buffeting (as some coupes do: porsche, and TT's)?
If you do have a sunroof, are you alowed to have it vent and keep the wind buffeting to a minimum?

Couldn't resist

If you not order the sunroof they might not hear you play this.

CF roof makes the car looks so much more unique and aggressive. It's a must to me.

I never understood why anyone would delete the CFRP roof. It's one of the key features (visually) that makes the M what it is and separates it from other cars.

This will be my 3rd BMW coupe and probably the first that I order without a sunroof. This has been a hard decision for me as well since I love my sunroof. I love blasting through the canyons with the windows down, sunroof open, and music up! My belief so far has been that the cabin looks to dark with out the light from the sunroof. I dont really care about the weight savings since I drive an M more out of enjoyment than speed. That being said, I do think that the CF roof is a must with the color that I am planning on ordering (AY).

I am probably going to really miss the sunroof though.

I like being able to look for bears in the sky. I love sun and fresh air.
But I would have to go for the CF, time to reduce skin cancer risk...

Not sure you would be allowed on the track with the roof open (our club does not allow it).

On a side note, my experience is that E90s have much more wind buffeting than E92s because of the shorter doors/windows. With the E92, the buffeting is mostly felt in the back seat and it is much quieter in the front.

Carbon Fiber Roof

Hi, how much more does conventional roof with sunroof weigh, and does it make a noticeable difference in handling? I don't care about looks, I like the functionality of a sunroof but don't want to sacrifice to much to have it. Thoughts?

For daily driving, it won't affect anything. If you're tracking, every little bit of weight savings helps. The difference in weight between the CF roof and the standard roof with a moon roof is probably +/- 50 lbs, which is significant considering where that weight is located.

If you're tracking the car, the biggest difference will be the decrease in headroom with a sunroof.

On the street there is no tangible difference in performance between the carbon roof and the sunroof.

For me headroom is a problem in many cars, especially if they have sunroofs. I wouldn't order a M4 with a sunroof so the CF roof is just a plus for me.

Carbon fiber roof or moonroof?

Are you going to order the moonroof or the CF roof? The CF roof would look strange on certain colors. It's too bad they don't also offer it as a painted option.
