More pieces means more options for aftermarket upgrades, which means more power = good.

More pieces means more oppurtunity for things to go wrong, especially since this will be a brand new or early model engine = bad

Personally I donŽt care what they put in that engine bay... "M" has sold out... I wonŽt get one for sure, going to keep my NA V8 for long long time... and if I decide to add to the stable IŽll have a NA Porsche... if I want turbo power IŽll get the GTR...

BMW could have opted to produce their damned more efficient user friendly turbocharged cars and with the money earned produce at least a more focused NA Sportscar... just like Porsche does with their Panameras Diesel and Turbo models but then still gives us cars like the GT3RS....

No more BMW for me. Thanks

+1

The Euro E36 M3 used the S50 engine, which was derived from the standard M50 engine.

Not really. There are some slight hardware changes...

The 335is/Z4is/1M do have different (primary)cats. They are more free flowing than regular N54 ones. These cars also have the PPK(extra radiator in the passenger fender, higher wattage radiator fan, sound generator and SW tune from BMW) already installed along with a different flywheel and clutch - which the normal x35i cars did not get.

The 335is/Z4is/1M cars do have a special SW tune that also allows for over boost in the low to mid range for short periods.

Couldn't this just be another hopped-up N54?

I am not saying it will not be improvement in weight to E46 but it will not be necessarily lighter. Add turbos to that config and all that comes with it you can't be really serious about 100lb weight saving.
It could be done through the use of lighter yet stronger materials just like we can do a steel roof or CFRP roof. Same concept. That's actually how the weight of the S65 was reduced over the S54.

Obviously I'm purely speculating here but normally inline 6 engines are not the lightest around because of the long crank that is used. That alone is gonna make it harder to be "lighter" than the current V8. So for arguments sake, let's say the motors weigh in at the same amount. What would then make me nervous is that they are taking weight out from other spots which give the car that "solid", secure feel. I'm not talking about how the car could feel when driving (which I'm sure will be great), I'm talking about just the overall solidness when say you close a door, hood, trunk, go over a speed bump, the little things like that. And if the car is going to be lighter, and the motors do weigh the same, then that means the front end of this car is gonna carry more weight possibly making the car feel nose heavy and not that sweet 50/50 distribution that we all love. Now if the motor IS lighter somehow then I just wasted all my time texting this and that's why the M engineers are some of the best in the world hahaha
Being that "50-50" weight distribution (or as close to it as possible) has been one of the constants with BMW over time, i doubt they'll go Audi or Porsche on us and change that up. As far as the solid feel, I think that has more to do with the seals used and the tightness of the seams than just heavy materials being used to make up for that. Craftsmanship is where that makes a difference.

This comment made me laugh. Have you not seen M54->S54... minus the individual throttle bodies they are very similar. Same goes for the E36 with the S50 and M50 which are almost the same as well... The only car to break that mold has been the E9x with its unique engine.

wow; thx. for the ultra-rapid response!! let me push my luck a little and ask this: if i'm in the market for a 4_ _ or 2_ _ when they're released in a year or so, is it likely that they will have the next-gen 6cyl. engines? feel free to tell me to shut up anytime, lol.
Both 2 series and 4 series will come with a 6 cylinder. Most likely the same N55 found on current 335i and rumored to have a higher output engine for the rumored 440i. 240i? Maybe but not as likely as an M2

It's not wastegate rattle, something is clearly loose and rattling on the car.

You can hear it when it pulls in the driveway. Unless, you know, wastegate rattle slows and speeds up with ground speed.

My fear is that BMW may continue to have fits and starts with the motor engineering, like they've had on the N5X turbo motors and that Mini project, or that the things just won't run forever like the NAs have. I have an M20B motor from 1979 that still pounds it out in the original "fast" 3-series, the E21 Euro.

But the idea of having a 450HP motor with the turbos already on it, ready for whatever HP boost you can get out of reprogramming, is just nuts if you're only into the car for the short term, and that's the profile of the typical M3 owner these days. Right now it costs a fair whack to get a supercharger on the M3 -- though I am hopeful that the cost will drop as the car ages (as was the case with the E36 M3), since I am in the long-term owner category.

I'm a bit disappointed by this.

Rather than engineer a new M engine for the M3, BMW gives us some reworked N55 engine. It's the same story with the M5/6 engine from the X5/6M line. BMW is really cheaping out on the R&D of these engines.

Ya, it'll produce some good power and torque, but it's nothing special in any regard. It will probably be a 3.6L TT I6 making 450HP and redline at 7k. Not impressive at all. When you're starting to charge prices near the GT-R for your car, you need to up the performance ante here; espsecially when $30k American Muscle keeps up with you on the track. The GT-R now gets 545HP from a 3.8L TT V6, and is called the Baby Veyron/Godzilla for a reason. If you're gonna cheap up on beautiful NA racing engines and high red lines, you better bring us more power instead. 450HP is barely worth noting in the performance world today.

After saying all this, I will probably end up getting myself the F80 and doing ED on it. I just worry that BMW is becoming too soft and pandering to the crowds rather than their diehard niche. You win over the crowds by winning over the niche people; that being us performance enthusiasts for M division.

Time will tell.

I love all this anti-M blah, blah, blah.

I wish I had been around these boards when the E9X M3 came out. I can just imagine the comments.

"Oh no, a V8?!? Blasphemy!!"

"No I6, I'm not going to buy it"

"What happened to the I6 smoothness? This V8 is going to be rough as hell!".

LOL.

Fake pipes?

Go to min 2.32 in the video. Looks like the mule's inner exhaust pipes aren't being used. Significantly cleaner than the outer exhaust tips.

+1^. No performance figures yet and they're already bashing it - my favorite is "it's not a V8 - wah" - don't get me wrong - love myS65 - but the cylinder count in and of itself doesn't mean jack - if thats the case then Porsche 911's and Nissan Gtr's are not legitimate sports cars since they only have sixes...

To all you whiners out there - wait until the performance figures come out - if those figures are disappointing (which I very highly doubt) then you can bitch all you want..."

All the people bitching about a car that isn't released.

Imagine if it had a 4 cyl with a 7,000 rpm redline... Oh wait that was the first one.

Everyone take a benzo and have a drink. This car is going to be just fine.
