6MT problem - strange sound during 1->2 shift

Hello everyone,

I purchased my first BMW M car just days ago and so far it's been great. I purchased my M4 with the 6 speed manual transmission and the day after the initial purchase I noticed I slight "clicking" "clunking" "rattle" type noise coming from the transmission when I shift from 1-->2 usually at lower RPMs. Shifting from 2-->3 and thereafter is just fine and smooth as I would expect in a new vehicle.

This noise is not a grinding noise as when you miss a shift but it happens right after I disengage the clutch on 1st gear. I've driven manuals all my life and this has never happened to me.

I haven't seen another post about this issue with the 6 speed manual transmission on the F82 M4 so I'm just wondering if this noise is normal? Or should I take it into a dealership to get it checked? As of right now the car only has about 300 miles.

Any help and feedback would be appreciated thanks!

I wouldn't worry about it. I've owned the last 3 generations of cars and they all do it. If you are concerned though, just bring it by the dealer and have the M tech check it out.

Agreed, nothing to worry about, just drive it harder.

It's probably the diff. However, wouldn't hurt to have the dealer check it for your peace of mind if you're worried

With new solidly mounted rear end, you are more likely to feel and hear various clunks and thuds coming from the driveline, especially the diff area.

800 miles on mine and still quieter than my older porsche boxster, UUC short shifter 39 m5, and even the clackety-clack of my 06 honda civic SI (which had a superb shifter).

There's noise and clicks, but from a feel and sound perspective they are reassuring and perfectly normal for me.

I have mine going in next week for the similar noise but when disengaging in 6th and the clutch meets the pressure plate, almost sounds like metal on metal.

When shifting to 2nd, try engaging the clutch slower and see if the noise goes away. I had a post awhile back about this and I believe it's normal. It's like if you disengage the engine and transmission too fast it'll do it

Sorry for digging out this thread but I am facing the same problem with my M4 lately. The noise starts to appear after proper warm up of the vehicle only when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear.

Anyone had the same issues with man. gearbox ?

Mine does the same thing. I noticed it doesn't do it if I go up to 3k+ RPMs when shifting.

At low rpm, if you disengaged the clutch very quickly there is a muted thud sound. Shifting at a higher rpm and with a smoother longer press of the pedal remedies this.

Be sure you're not pulling the shifter out of 1st gear before you fully disengage the clutch. It is easy to do on this car.

Nothing to worry about, but if you're not comfortable just bring it to dealer.
You need to release you're clutch slowly, it happen to me when i first bought it
but when i play with the clutch it run's very smoothly.

Glad to hear it's just normal! I heard the same noise a couple of times before, usually when my car is cold and then it goes away

No issues w/ my MT when shifting from 1 to 2. I do get the occassional clutch chatter but that's typical on virtually all manuals.

Same thing happened with mine when it was new. It's nothing to worry about. Now the gears are smooth as silk.
