Does the general public think the M3 is a lower model than the M4?
On the forums, we know they are pretty much the same car, but those that don't know may conclude the M3 is a lower level model. I ran into an M4 owner yesterday and told him I had an M3 on order. He asked me which engine I got. I said same as M4. He asked "Turbo?" and I nodded. And then he asked "Twin turbo?". Then it occurred to me, he may have been thinking of the M2 or just didn't know much about the M3. I don't care either way, I didn't buy the car to impress others. The conversation just made me curious.

Just a thought but maybe he didn't get the part about you ordering a new car and thought of older M3's. Since they were all called M3 before this latest generation maybe he thought you were getting an S65 e92 M3? Maybe he was just being a dumb though, who knows.

It's possible, we were outside in a parking lot with wind and such. Even so, once I said it was the same engine, someone in the know would probably say, oh your getting a new one.

I think that the general public neither cares or knows what an M3 or M4 are. Outside of my car club, nobody knows anything about my cars except that they are BMWs. People in this forum give the general public much more credit than it deserves concerning specific model knowledge. Most people even have a hard time distinguishing a Prius from a Focus.

When I ordered my car, I told the wife that I got the same, but updated version of the one I had... an E92 M3 coupe. When I brought home an M4, she almost flipped out because she thought I lied to her and got the "next" tier of car.
So, using her as my sample, I conclude that people who don't give a shit about cars do think the M4 is "better" than the M3. |

The M4 must not have been his car, it would make sense if a person who does not know anything about M's to ask those questions, doesn't make sense that a M owner asked that

I think you just ran into a uneducated ///M owner that has too much money and has no idea what the hell a ///M really is.
The only public perception that I have seen is that they know "M3" better than "M4", and that's probably only because the M3 has been around for 30 years.

Like previous chassis codes and engine configs. That will restrict Ms to purists who understand where this legacy is coming from. (JK)

Wouldn't a V10 have a shorter hood? Only 5 cylinders front to back.

Most people do not have a clue about what an M car is or isn't. Had a passenger in my car the other day asking what sort of engine was in the car. I said it is a small displacement 6 cylinder that was reasonable on gas. Then we hit the on ramp and I booted it. Priceless!
