F80 vs G80 vs E90

Hi guys

I recently got a few friends together to compare the differences between a G, F and E M3:

https://machineswithsouls.com/2021/1...s-the-best-m3/

It's that S65 that makes the difference…

Nice shots.

I was looking at the second picture and for a split second there I thought to myself, "Hm that G80 is a pretty sexy looking car from the side.", only to realize it was the F80. No surprises there. 😁

They did such a good job on the styling of the F80.

F80 best looking and E90 probably the most fun to drive around town IMO.

I had 2 e9x and an F80. I just picked up an e92 for a keeper. Fun to drive slow and fast. Nothing beats the S65… what a beast.

A more time goes by, the more the other cars look dated and the G80 looks more aggressive. It doesn't make it better or worse, just newer and more aggressive.

No. G80 will always be adjudicated as the red headed stepchild of the bunch by M enthusiasts.

Not only this, but Apex is dumping the G80 to go back to their F80 due to some type of yet to be disclosed reliability issues. We wait with bated breath.

I parked my F80 next to a E90 at the grocery store a couple of days ago. You could clearly see the natural progression between the two cars. The DNA is the same in both, with the E90 being a beautiful car and the F80 improving on those styling cues and knocking it out of the park.

I see NONE of that going from the F80 to the G80. The cars share nothing, absolutely nothing. It's just such a terrible styling miss from front to rear, there isn't a single angle of the car that looks decent. I just hate the damned cars, they really piss me off because I wanted to love them as there's nothing else in this class I'm interested in. The styling isn't growing on me at all, if anything it's getting worse in my mind. It just sucks.

I'd disagree, but yes, parked next to the other 2, the G isn't as pretty.

Here was mine, as much as I wanted to love the thing I could never get used to it. I'd stare at it constantly, I never liked a single angle on it. I didn't like the interior either, except for the carbon seats nothing at all felt special about it. Once I got back in a F80 to test drive, I felt back at home again and signed away that G82 and got back into an F8x in a couple hours. I'm not some salty hater who doesn't like the G8x because it's the newest model and I care about those types of things. I wanted to like the car, but in the end for me there was nothing at all to like about it.

I mean look at these three cars of mine. Granted the G82 is stock and the others are messaged pretty well on the outside, but who would choose the white one over the other two? I don't buy the G82 looking "newer" either, never have. We only know because we're enthusiasts who know the natural progression of the cars. 99% don't, hell I still have people ask me all the time if I just bought the F80. I think the F8x look as modern as anything on the road. Just a simple drop, a lip, and a diffuser and they're still killer looking cars.

Enjoy the cars everyone, but F8X for life for me hah! (unless the new M2 somehow corrects a lot of wrongs)

Respectfully disagree, there are plenty of us former F8X owners who have not looked back (and a few who have, admittedly) and are enjoying the new aesthetic the G8X is brining to the table. It is more controversial, but I think that's what is bringing a new audience to the car, while alienating the traditionalists. In a way, I kind of like that... it's taking risks and I wish more car manufacturers would take.

They've had problems in the past... but they also have problems with the GR Supra didn't they (or was that someone else)? Either way, it will be interesting to see what issues they are having, because by all accounts the G8X is faster around the track. Being a ring taxi service, maybe there is something about it that doesn't fit their needs with their customers.

"Newer" is a matter of perspective, true, to me, after 2 F80's I'm just used to it and the G8X is fresh in my mind's eye, and therefore more alluring to me. Stock form, true, your G82 doesn't look as nice as your F80 and F82, so I don't blame you. In the end, it's all subjective, and if you prefer your F8X and are lucky enough to have one, that's all that matters!

At the end of the day, the G8X is simply a better car in every regard when it comes to the act of driving. But I cannot fault you for moving back to the F, and I picked the E9X as the winner in that test.

Me thinks, if money were no object, I'd have every M3 because every one is special in their own right. As long as you enjoy yours, you've made the correct choice.

Posted this on e9x forum, but made it out to HPR with a couple other generations. I love my e92, but over the years the f8x GTS has really grown on me. I think it's the best chassis to build a very competitive track car. Although I despise the F's fat ass / bubble rear bumper.

No denying the S58 is a fucking monster. I've settled my frustrations with the G8x although I'm definitely partial to the sedan. The coupe just looks huge and weird from the side.

It just isn't true that the G8x is the better driving car. The E9x would likely win that contest as far as overall driving experience. Depending on what you're doing and the mods the car had, the G8x might have an edge or the F80/E90 could win the day or at least be the equal. True, if you enjoy the car then that's the right car for you but the idea that the G8x is some massive improvement in performance or styling is false. The G8x is a sideways to downward move for the M3/4 in multiple ways. From the automatic transmission to the boring engine bay, there are many details about the G8x that leave a lot to be desired in what could have been.

To the G8x styling fans, what do you make of the styling on the door? Doesn't it bother you that the line on the bottom of the doors just ends at the mid point of the rear door? Where's the equivalent version of this on the F8x/E9x? Sure, it's all a matter of taste on if you like this or not but can we admit this is at least unusual compared to the F8x/E9x.

Holy crap, your E92 is gorgeous. One of these days I will own one. Sorry, but that white G80 sticks out like a sore thumb, and I like AW.
