How much will used F80 prices drop with the G20 and G80 release?

Now that the G series cars are coming out - like M340i and soon the next gen M3... how significantly do you think prices on used F80 M3 and M4 models will depreciate?

Obviously all cars depreciate overtime - but I'm wondering as these new models with their new styling new technology, etc. hit the road - making the outgoing F 80 look dated - will thst cause the values to drop more significantly?

I'm in the market for a used F 80 and I'm wondering if I should sit on the sidelines a little bit longer and wait for the newer cars to start hitting the roads especially the new M3...in hopes the prices would take a sharper decline and I could get into a better/newer/lower mileage M3 for less money.

I have an M340i loaner and it's super nice. I can totally see how most people are going tj want the newer styling / tech - making the existing F80 look less desirable .... obviously there will still be people who really want them but in the mainstream market they won't sell as well at least that's my thought

Hard to tell.
The fact is - our cars drop in value every day. Don’t worry about the new model out just search for the right car for you today. You’ll always lose money on it - it’s a depreciating asset. But it puts a big smile on your face d.

Regarding the G80 - I personally don’t think they’re that innovative. Basic Tech is the same and the look is very subjective. What is the new car’s wow factor? I can’t find one... Based on what I’m seeing from the G30 - I won’t be switching to a G80 any time soon. It is just not that much of a drastic difference.

If you find the perfect f80 spec'd to exactly how you like it, I'd jump on it ASAP! My 2018 comp pack was the best all around car I have ever driven! Comfortable enough to soak up bad roads, and absolutely savage pulling even from 4-6th gear very hard! Make sure to get the comp pack though!

Well personally if the G series M3 has the nose I just saw on the Bimmerpost home page, our F80's will start going up in value...what an ugly nose...but as mentioned above, the cars are always depreciating so if you find something with the colours and options you want, go for it! It's really a fantastic car.

just be happy if you can sell your car if low mileage and well kept. at high 30s maybe low 40s...

trying to bank on the appreciation/deprecation of a NEWer car is riskier than gambling

How many of these threads are there going to be? To OP and others who have started similar threads. Nobody has a crystal ball so nobody really knows. But, of course when the new model comes people want that and demand for the older one slows. So yah almost always the prices go down. As to how much who knows.

The trend for M cars is that they typically depreciate less than your non-M cars. Don't count on making money on an M car though lol.

Though I don't like how BMW is throwing M in front of their normal cars like "M340i" or "M550i", I think it's going to saturate the market with "M" cars.

M3's depreciate on a curve. Prices are already dropping and will likely drop more with the G80. However, once it becomes a few generations old, prices start creeping back up for well maintained examples. I think the F series has a chance to be beloved like the e46, based on design alone.

Tommy-

Have you considered doing any videos where you take out your F80 and do a direct comparison to a new M340i? It will be interesting to have someone do some short acceleration comparisons make me some freeway Runs to see how the new M340 stacks up to the F80 M3/M4!

Not entirely.

Apparently the M3 is coming in several tiers and only the bottom 2 tiers are getting the MT.

The highest power/optioned ones are AT only.

I think a decent line to take would be to look at the prior gen M3. A real quick look shows some decent 2013s (last model year), still asking in the mid to low 30k range. I don't think anyone could convince me the F80/82/83 would drop below the prior gen M3 in value, so if I had to guess I think the 2015 models have hit peak depreciation at least for a couple years. If you look hard enough, you can find decent current gen M3/M4s for high 30s. That is an absolute freaking STEAL for this car.

This question comes up with every new generation. I remember seeing the same sort of threads when the E46, E90, and F80 were coming out.

Thing is, prices will drop, and then at some point, prices will stabilize. If you're not willing to accept that a car will loose value, you probably should just get a beater (no offense).

I was more thinking that when the new model finally starts hitting the dealerships perhaps you'll see a slight increase in supply on the F 80s as people start trading them in to get the new one... if supply goes up prices might take a slight hit and i could save a few bucks. Obviously if prices dip some real marginal amount it won't make a difference but if we're talking a $5000 or more hit that would pay for an extended warranty...

If there's any increase in supply, I don't think it'll make a huge difference considering the total # of them made -- https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1551939

Total worldwide: just under 35k. If a dealership gets 3 - 5 more cars on the lot.. eh. Plus IMO, they will just take the stance of "oh, this car is rare.. you can't buy them anymore" which is just the opposite when you go to trade it in "oh, these cars are only for particular people, so it's harder to sell".

I bought my F82 last year used for $49k fully loaded (except the CCB.) I hope to drive for three more years and can get $30k for it. $5k/year depreciation is not too shabby for a high-performance car.

Depreciation

Here is funny thought.... I sold an 2008 e90 M3 back in 2014 when I heard the F80 was coming out of fear that I was going to get killed in depreciation on that car... I bought it for 34k and sold it for 33k about a year after I bought it and putting about 10k miles on it... The F80 was announced, came out and had a sticker in the 60k range starting and loaded for 75k... I could not afford to buy one so in 2016 started searching for another e90 m3, and guess what prices for clean cars were still around the 30k range.... I just ran through the forum looking at 2008 e90 prices today and cars are still selling for 25-30k if clean and decent miles. The big hit has already come, and honestly the f80 has much less known issues (rod bearings and Throttle actuators on e90) I think the depreciation curve is super sharp at first but with price support coming from e9x platform you wont see these cars below 30-35k anytime soon. E46 range from 10k-25k depending on condition miles and options, e9x from 20-39k (yes look at for sale forum on a low mileage comp package)… Manual seems to be holding value better then DCT as well just for the sure lack of production. So many factors but my guess is you could buy one now for low 40k range with decent miles, drive it for 1-2 years and still sell for 35-37k
