Just went into dealership to get the 2 diff screws installed. They didn't hand me any paperwork. Just showed me the old screws in a bag.
All done with 1,200 service now. Wish we, the consumers, didn't have to watch over the Service Dept. But thanks Dackelone for all the info. |

So my car ended up getting the engine oil and diff fluid changed. The guys working in the back know what's up. I think the service agents are just "greeters" that don't know much.

From one of my car guy friend's who works for BMW's R&D Center (FIZ). Quote:
You know guys.... some of my buddies who work for BMW have to go thru the same service BS too. Its amazing that while BMW can build such great cars, the dealer experience can have very poor customer service. It's up to us as consumers to demand better service from our dealers.

The same service agent told me that launch control was never deactivated on the car. Don't know if that's true given it's the same guy that didn't know I needed an oil change. |

^^that is not true. We know LC is deactivated bc we have already had two forum members confirm it after they had the first service done and their dealers did not reset the BC correctly. Dackel

Does anyone have anything official looking from BMW about the requirement to replace engine and diff drain screws with new ones? My dealer is saying it is unnecessary. I tried explaining this was a change for F8x but got nowhere.

@Dackelone - when I did my 1200 break in in Europe, they put in the 83229407870 diff oil (according to the invoice).
It seems this is a (60L canister) version that is used in Europe only... Is this right? I don't mind if it makes more noise. (And yes they did replace the screw on the engine and 2 metal screws with o-rings on the diff.) Thanks |

although if the drain plugs on diff are not replaced it is unlikely they will leak. Due to the low milage and elasticity of the rubber. also a coworkers car would not let him engage launch control until the odometer was past 1200 miles. he performed his 1200 mile service 80 miles early and yes the service was done correctly.

Had the break-in service done last Friday and of course I had to tell them about the screws having to be replaced. The problem is that I am looking through the part numbers and I am worried about the diff fluid they used.
1x 11-42-7-566-327 Oil Filter 7x 07-51-0-017-954 Motor Oil SAE 5W-30 1x 11-11-7-849-396 Screw Plug with Gasket 2x 83-22-1-467-993 Differential Oil 2x 33-11-7-525-064 Screw Plug with O-Ring They used 83-22-1-467-993 1L Differential Oil which is the SAF-XJ without the FM (b/c it's cheaper) and I was under the impression this diff. requires SAF-XJ + FM; do I need to have it swapped out??? Is it going to hurt the diff. or would it just risk being noisy??? P.S. where do I find the service history in iDrive, looked everywhere and nothing... |

SAF-XJ diff fluid is perfectly fine. I said that I suspect in time the "+FM" might be spec'd bc of noisy diff(operation) complaints. Dack

I have had SAF+XJ in mine for 400 miles with a perfectly quiet diff.
Diff is quieter now than it was at 500 miles on the car.

FWIW It's pretty quiet with whatever fluid they put in during the service but it wasn't making any noise as far as I could tell from before anyway... Last edited by miula; 09-24-2014 at 06:55 AM.. |

I just made an appointment with my local dealer to have my 1200 service done. When I requested for transmission oil change, the SA advise against it and gave a rough estimate of $1400 for the change. Is this right? My gut is telling me this guy is under informed, he says he also has a M3 (guessing previous gen).

Maybe talk to the tech when you go in for that first service. You can always have a good indi shop do the trans change as well. Most reputable shops should only charge you 1.0 to 1.5 hours in shop time - to change the manual trans fluid. Maybe three hours tops IF you have an DCT. Plus materials(trans oil, and new plugs).

You're right Dac! Well, I tried calling another dealer and the SA there responded in about the same manner too. They seemed adamant that it's not a good idea to change the tranny oil and that the oil is good for the life of the car. Maybe doing it through a dealership is not a good idea at this point? I'm afraid they would use that as a reason to void the tranny warranty (they did also say that it might jeopardize the tranny which I think is a bunch of baloney).

Others have said it, but it's worth reiterating: remind the service advisor that the oil and diff plugs must be replaced. I told them ahead of time, reminded them that morning, but picked up the car without paying attention. Of course, when I got home I looked again and the diff plugs were not on the list.
Called, was told I was wrong -- "my most experienced tech worked on it". Gave them the part number from this thread and gently suggested they check again . Response was "oh, this is different than other cars and yours is the first one we serviced". Even better, they increased the tire pressure from 32 cold to 42R/38F. Seems like a good time for them to check ahead of time, no? Amazing. All is well, but wastes another two hours for no reason. |
