Would be interesting if BMW adapts some of the turbo technology that will be seen in F1 next year

Of particular interest is the MGU-H (Motor Generator Unit - Heat) that is attached to the turbo:

Quote:
TURBOCHARGER
A turbocharger uses an exhaust driven turbine to drive a compressor to increase the density of the intake air consumed by the engine and so make more power for a given displacement.

The residual heat energy contained in the exhaust gases after expansion in the cylinders of the engine is converted to mechanical shaft power by the exhaust turbine. The mechanical power from the turbine is used to drive the compressor, and also the MGU-H (see below).

As the turbocharger speed must vary to match the requirement of the engine, there may be a delay in torque response, often known as turbo-lag. One of the great challenges of the new Power Unit is to reduce this to near zero to match the instant torque delivery of the current V8 engines.
Quote:
MGU-H
The MGU-H is connected to the turbocharger. Acting as a generator, it absorbs power from the turbine shaft to recover heat energy from the exhaust gases. The electrical energy can be either directed to the MGU-K or to the battery for storage for later use. The MGU-H is also used to control the speed of the turbocharger to match the air requirement of the engine (eg to slow it down in place of a wastegate or to accelerate it to compensate for turbo-lag.)
This is a brilliant piece of engineering, possibly a game changer of power delivery characteristics on a turbocharged engine

Any rumours of a electric turbocharger on the next M3/M4 might be a similar device as shown here, to spool up the turbos, or slow it down instead of using a wastegate to dump excess exhaust.

BTW, this is what next years F1 engine will sound like:

Here is MagnetiMarelli's version of a "electric/hybrid" turbo. TThey have chosen a slightly different solution with the generator/motor unit between the compressor and turbine units of the turbo. Seems like Mercedes is using a variant of this solution as well.

And okay, I get it... Turbo to go faster and more efficiency, but would thosereally guarentee the true driving feel of a sports car?

Seriously...if it's going to be Turboed with being "faster" in mind, yet it will still be slower than the GTR, i might as well get the GTR which will have less problem + more reliable + more tuning capable + most importantly faster asa "TURBO CAR"

I'm just sayin...after seeing the already success of FR-S and BRZ, I kinda miss the powertrain and drive of older days of M3....what a true sports car used to be
Agree with you..I just don't like this turbo idea..Thats why I sold my 335i for M3.

I thought I'd take another look and discovered the valve cover has a disguised logo that obviously ends with "Power", anyone able to work with the photo to bring out the rest of the letters?

If you have driven a N54 powered car such as the 335IS, it is hard to agree. Owned a 2011 335IS and drove V8 powered M3s at the BMW Spartenburg, SC test track. The 335IS acceleration with 379ft-lbs of torque is much more fun to drive. Of course, the M3 is the complete package and has much better handling than the 335IS. Therefore, I think when the lighter, faster reving( believe me no turbo lag in the N54), better accelerating twin/tri turbo is married to the M3 chassis, we will all be very impressed!

I had both an N54 and an N55 car, they are both very good engines but the S65 blows them into orbit IMO. Still I'm looking very much forward to the F80 but it has nothing to do with the change of engine. It will be fun to see what they have cooked up and I'm certain it will be awesome but the S65 is extraordinary and very, very special IMO. We will never again see such an engine outside exotics.

I agree that there is also something appealing about a high reving V8 and its simple design versus the more complex, and probably less reliable turbo charged I6. However, I like the idea of better efficiency and quick response of the smaller displacement( less weight helps handling too). But, I am still not completely comfortable with how long a turbo charged engine will last before it has problems and needs repairs. I am hoping to keep my next M car for a while. :-)

don't mistake the S65 V8 for anything simple. Just because it lacks turbochargers and direct injection doesn't mean it's any less advanced. with 8 individual throttle bodies and a computer that is capable of performing 200 million calculations per second (a statistic by which the M3 measures as the most advanced engine in the world), it's far from simple.

New M3 Engine

I think it should be called a ELECTROMECHANICALSUPERTURBOCHARGER. That about covers it , don't you think?

Retiring this thread from the sticky'd thread list.

Don't know why this was ever doubted seeing as the confirmation came straight from the BMW NA CEO to our ear. But, happy to see that the official specs have finally confirmed what we've been saying since May 2012.
