Preferred drive settings (Throttle, Steering, Suspension, Transmission, Start-Stop)

Stemming off of this thread, I'm curious to see what drive settings people use most of the time. So, let's conduct this poll once and for all:

For each of the five settings, select the one you use when you get in your car and drive off (not for the one-off track day or spirited drive).
  • Throttle: [Efficient, Sport, Sport+]
  • Steering: [Comfort, Sport, Sport+]
  • Suspension: [Comfort, Sport, Sport+] (if you have passive suspension, do not select a suspension option)
  • Transmission: [6MT, M-DCT: Auto, M-DCT: Manual]
  • Start/Stop: [On, Off]

Vote away!

I ended up selecting both "auto" and "manual" for the M-DCT. I honestly drive in each mode ~50% of the time

An option for passive suspension would have been nice, but instead I just voted for none of the suspension choices.

I leave Start/Stop on since it never activates because it is automatically disabled in manual DCT modes which I use exclusively.

Same here, passive suspension thus no vote for suspension. Everything else is S+ and off.

Poll only allowed me to vote on one variable, but mostly run Sport across all three with DCT-auto (D2) and start/stop off. I put suspension in Comfort if my wife is with me.

It is not necessarily obvious to answer. The beauty of the drive select mode is the ability to change the character of the car on the fly. From a comfortable cruiser to a romping monster with touch of a button. Since the question is which I use most, I picked my DD configuration, but it is not necessarily my favorite one .

Daily Drive
Engine: Efficient
EDC: Comfort
Steering: Comfort
DSC: MDM
DCT: S1
Start/Stop: On (only activates if I flick it in D)

The dual personality, that you called out, of this car is one of the big selling points for me!

27 days can't pass quickly enough so I can figure out my own settings!

My bad - sorry guys! Yes, for passive suspension, select none of the choices

What I'm looking for is to get a sense of what BMW should have set as default, or at least give us the option to change. As such, the DD setting is the one I'm looking to get.

But yes, I love the fact that this car has a multiple personality disorder!

BMW are likely constrained with giving us an Efficient engine setting as a default for consumption and emissions certification reasons. It would be interesting to find out what settings for Suspension and Steering folks are most likely to use in combination with the Efficient Engine setting.

Surprised more people don't have their steering set to sport plus. I love the heavier feel of the wheel. Ive gone to comfort and sport before and it just seems to not offer enough feedback

Yes for sure about the engine setting, and I can see why that is not "customizable". However, unless the other two impact emissions, I don't see why we can't change the default. The only one I could be remotely convinced that it impacts emissions is steering, though I could also be convinced that the lighter steering requires more energy to help, which would in fact be even worse for emissions.

Yes, I fully agree. The fact that the 2 other are not configurable is frustrating, I just don't understand why BMW did not do it. This is what prompted me to do the other poll. I wanted to find out how many were happy with the Efficient/Sport/Sport combination that I find rather useless.

I think that between the both of these polls, we actually have a convincing and good story to tell BMW.

1) the original poll shows that only ~10% of the users use the default settings, as of now
2) this poll shows what users actually want

This not only creates a case for change (#1), but also what the defaults could/should be (#2), which seems to be Sport/Comfort/Sport at the moment, but even more insightful is the fact that peoples' preferences are all over the place. I can understand that engine setting needs to be Efficiency for emission reasons - fine, same with start/stop being on by default - fine. But either way, the others should be adjustable.

I wish the poll actually showed the difference in how 6MT/DCT users prefer their settings and not just how many of those transmissions answered.

Example. I have a 6MT and keep the start/stop on because by the time I depress the clutch and get her in gear the engine is back to normal operating condition. I just wish the A/C compressor was electric so the air wouldn't case the engine to come back on during longer lights. Also, sport vs. sport+ for throttle. Its a bigger difference for us compared to DCT due to the rev matching.

Who drives mostly in Sport + throttle?

Just curious... In dry conditions Sport Plus is, in my opinion - the most fun in terms of acceleration, sound and overall feel...

Sport is pretty fun too - but not quite as much!

I know that Sport + causes the cooling system to work harder at maintaining a lower oil temp - but on the street - wonder if it is truly working that much harder.?

Anyway - curious to hear what others think...

Lately liking sport plus, comfort, sport and shift 1 bar.

Seems I go a few weeks then change it up.

Great Poll OP,

I have these settings programed in my "M1" settings on the steering wheel:

Throttle: Sport
Suspension: Sport +
Steering: Sport +
DCT: Manual
2 shift bars
HUD: M View

I get in, buckle up, turn the car on, push M1 and off I go.

Hmmm...just got the car but over the past few days I'm preferring this as my DD setting. Strange but true, just love it. It's also my M1 setting which I'll firm up for track use when I need to:

Throttle: Sport +
Suspension: Comfort
Steering: Sport
DCT: D
DriveLogic: 3 bars

When I need to go out of 5th on a longer, easy stretch I'll paddle shift up and then put it back into the above at my leisure.

I'm also liking this as a compromise which I've set to M2:

Throttle: Sport +
Suspension: Comfort
Steering: Sport
DCT: D
Drive logic: 2 bars

Otherwise I'm playing in manual mode when I can.

I did not buy this car for the gas mileage so Efficent Mode is turned off as soon as the car is started.
