Steering wheel vibration at high speeds

Just noticed my steering wheel starts to vibrate around 100mph. Not an alarming amount but enough to be noticeable.

Should just be a tire balance issue right?

The tire balance issue would definitely present itself at a lower speed, like 50MPH. I think it might be due to the road and that you're going 100MPH.

balance certainly most likely. check your wheels carefully: if you've lost a weight the adhesive will usually leave a mark that's fairly easy to see.
btw, how many miles are on your car?

Its possible that the wheels had some balance blocks fall off. I'd bring it to an alignment shop and make sure everything is in check + get a wheel balancing. Not bank breaking.

36k miles.

I'll take a look at the wheels. Hopefully it's just one of the weights fell off.

If you notice the steering wheel vibration at specific speeds it's definitely a wheel balance issue. If it's constant than probably another problem like a bent rim.

ok, 36K miles not enough to consider control arm bushings (we hope). worst i ever had was was an E39 that ate its bushings every 55K.
anyway, vibration related to bushings gets much worse under braking, not what your car is doing.
so money's on wheel weight(s).
if that's the case make sure to use a shop with Hunter Road Force equipment.
let us know how this turns out.

Happened to me awhile back, nothing visible so had it checked, Nail. All good ever since.

My order of operations would be to check for bent wheel lip(most likely the inner barrel will bend, wheel weight(s) missing, test thrust arms with car off the ground. Push and pull wheel towards and away from yourself. If there is any play it is bad arm/bushing.
Probably rule out brake rotor if you don’t notice it under braking.
Quick check of struts/shocks by pushing car down at that corner.
Beyond that you are getting into wheel bearing territory.

I had this issue when I installed a spacer in the front. Vibration between 90-100 mph. No vibration below or above.

Noticed this myself over the weekend - once I hit 100 I started to get vibration through the wheel. Granted the road I was on was shite, but does anyone have a resolution to their issue?

I have 10mm spacers on all 4 and I get the vibration at high speeds, is this just something you have to live with when running spacers?

The lug bolts are higher grade than stock M14 so they can take more torque, use it. Also cleaned my hub and from the insane heat at the track I may have corrected the flatness. I'm using thin 5mm in the front tho.

i had the same issue after 80 my wheels would vibrate, i swapped tires to RE71-R's and no vibrations or weird sounds. could be the tires.

Hi all,

Similar issues, 2017 bmw m4 completely stock with 25k on clock.

1. Mild vibration @80 on oem continentals ;
2. Upgraded to MPSS, vibration now more pronounced at a higher speed ;
3. Alignment done by bmw and mildly better, they also balanced the wheels ans said no issue. Vibration still present at 85-88 only. Certain roads seem to exacerbate i.e wet
4. Checked pressures and went from 32/33 psi to 35/36 psi. Can confirm vibration slightly more pronounced ; alignment redone by indy. Again alignment check came in green ;
5. Wheels (x4) road force balanced, no issue with balancer indicating all in line. Bushes and linkages look fine on visual inspection ;
6. When car was ceramic coated the wheels were removed and all surfaces cleaned.

I am scratching my head here. Everything seems good. I do have slight vibration on heavy braking which comes and goes but not out of ordinary.

Any ideas guys and girls ?

Was the car parked for a long time? Possible flat spots on tires causing da funk?

It's how an M4 drives.

Mine does it, everyones does it.

If any minor thing is out of spec in this car everything goes to waste, mine vibrates in cold weather and rain, it's good in the heat.

I don't get it, spent money pulled the car apart everything is perfect.

If there was snow in your area could be snow under your car stuck causing vibrations.

Completely clear of snow and ice. Very small power band where it exists. Think I will just need to live with it...

Had the same issue recently, worn bearings front/rear.
@30K miles.

New bearings...problem gone!

Same thing here. 100 KPH I get a faint high frequency vibration that fades out at 103 KPH. I'll have it checked this spring when it comes out of storage. If it's wheel bearings I'd be curious to find out since the car only has 46K Km.

I also had an E39 that had a control arm bushing issue which gave me a vibration at a very specific speed range (50-60mph). That's the first thing I would be checking as other posters have mentioned. balance issue usually presents itself upon braking from speed as it is very noticeable in the steering wheel. I hope you get it resolve quickly.
