Unless you are getting a smoking price on the vargas I am not sure what would draw you there. I have never had any problems with vargas but there reputation for customer service is certainly not stellar. Whenever i had question on 4N I would call Mike and he would walk me through it. |

Yeah, I've listened to just about every video I've found online anywhere... Love the setup, and it's very proven.... Just always curious to look around and explore other options! What power level have you been running at the track? How has the balance been and does it feel like its overpowering the chassis? |

KMP kit is as good as it gets for the track. I did it for 2 reasons...diff lift and moved to solid bushings from the poly powerflex I had previously. My diff had signs of bottoming out and all other rubber has been removed so seemed like a good move.

Now that you have some track time on the 4N kit are you happy with it? or do you wish you would have gone with hybrids like the Pure HF or Mosselmans? I want a nice single, but i think the twins are hard to beat on the track...

Finally got started on the f80 again this week. Wish I started earlier because I would have had more time to chase down some issues before track season starts in May.
I had ordered a CF roof from 2M a while back and it finally arrived this week so after parking the car in October changed the oil to fire it up and drive it to the body shop where the roof was going to be installed. To my surprise found what looks like aluminum shavings in the oil filter. Fingers crossed its just the exhaust cam issue that hit a lot of S55's and that I get out of this with just a new exhaust cam and cam ledge. My mechanic didnt think it looked like bearing material. [IMG] ![]() ![]() ![]() [/IMG]Here are a few shots of the roof. For the price I think its pretty good quality. Nice and smooth with no visible defects. Shop will hopefully be done with it by the end of next week. the interior side of the roof does not have a nice finish so will paint matte black. the headliner will not be going back in. will just maintain the front portion of the headliner to match the a pillar. Will also be pulling the door cards, removing all the speakers and remaining insulation. Have flat carbon panels that will do in and maintain window and mirror controls. It still gets driven on the street a bit, mostly to the track, so going for the spartan look. [IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG]My goal with this is weight reduction and should pull 40+ pounds off the roof compared to my steel w. sunroof. My harness bar from Fall Line showed up a few weeks ago. Nice piece of kit. Welds look great. thinking I will paint it with charcoal steel it spray paint. I have hot water heating in the garage so will be safe to do it. [IMG] ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [/IMG]Will be moving from quick fit harnesses to a proper six point. with the cobra seats will still retain the factor 3 point as well. New Enduro harnesses and brey krause sub bar. Need to get a second hans device now so can bring passengers. [IMG] ![]() [/IMG]One thing I am still waiting on is a CSR drexler diff with custom ramps from TrackS. Needed to go with the newer style CF driveshaft from the one I have. Found a used one on ebay. [IMG] [/IMG]New Alcon rotors and pads. These are beefy! [IMG] ![]() ![]() ![]() [/IMG]New front hubs and rear gt4 hubs and motor sport bearings [IMG] ![]() [/IMG]picked up a girodisk pad spreader. these Alcons are such a bitch to get the pistons in figured a tool like this would help. [IMG] [/IMG]M5 looking good outside. Needed to clean a lot of winter grim out and wash the garage floor. [IMG] [/IMG]Picked up a stock of fluids for the summer [IMG] [/IMG]and my new helper who distracts me more from getting work done in the garage...he is not actually very helpful [IMG] [/IMG]I dont have time to tear into the top end so once the roof is done will take it in to have the valve cover pulled. I have tooled up to install the rest of the parts but for now I am not familiar with the cam procedure so will leave it to a professional to get done and hopefully have it back on the road early April. Wasnt budgeting for motor build but if it needs it will build something nice. Last edited by b_w.; 03-08-2025 at 07:47 PM.. |

Started working on looking for the source of metal in the oil filter. Got the valve cover stripped off today. Was almost hoping I would be able to wiggle the exhaust cam and have that aha I found it moment but no luck.
Spent a lot of time to get the massive intake pipe out. Needed to lift the engine up and down a bunch to be able to wiggle it out. Gives me a chance to now weld the bung in to reconnect my catch can to the intake. There was very minimal oil in it which makes me wonder if my PCV is working. I ordered the cam install/removal kit. Of course you can only buy it as a complete set for the n/s 55 , n54 and whatever other n varieties there are. One potential challenge I see is the single turbo heat shield might interfere with installing the alignment tool. Will see once it arrives on Monday but hoping I don't have to pull the turbo manifold which is in the way of removing just the heat shield. Will finish stripping it tomorrow so can pull the cam on Monday. Think the valvetronic solenoid and cam timing components, injectors and wells, as re the only things in my way. Hope once I remove the wells and the tensioner k can see some indication of my problem. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Got rear ended in the M5 the other week sitting at a red light so convenient timing to have room in the garage. ![]() Last edited by b_w.; 03-22-2025 at 10:32 PM.. |

Finished stripping the timing components today. Should receive the exhaust cam tool tomorrow and will get this going. Nothing unusual other than maybe some rust on the intake cam in between the lobes. Didn't start it all winter so maybe some condensation built up. Eccentric shaft gear looks good too. Was tempted to just pull the cam today but with the correct tool arriving so soon not worth risking damage.

Been working the last few nights to pull the oil pan. Would have had it off a few nights ago if it were not for the steering rack. I must have fubared it but the splines on the steering column were twisted so had to pound it off. Took me a about 3 hours to do it. Steering rack end looks fine but found a used column I will swap in.
Most of the work to drop the subframe is pulling everything out of the way. With a teams jack and the steering rack removed it was a piece of cake. Will tackle the oil pan tomorrow and hopefully find my issue. I am mentally prepared that it is getting new bearings ![]() ![]() ![]() Have some new parts on the way. My Drexler diff shipped so should have that next week. I had also ordered a cf GTS hood but that didn't work out. Vendor is being good about handling the return. Ended up ordering a gtr hood from motorsport 24 in Germany. They had one in stock so should have it soon. Will cut for hood latches myself. Comes gelcoated so will paint to match. ![]() ![]() |

Have the pan off. lots of chunks of gasket, sealant etc. Also some chunks of harder stuff. All the big pieces you see are the sealant. its soft and squishy. Wish I saved that oil filter to compare to this but it does seem like material is coming off somewhere.
I am having one of those moments where I am thinking, now that I am here now what? Game plan is to temporarily reinstall the exhaust cam and timing components so I can rotate the motor and pop some of the caps off. If anyone can weight in on this I believe I would risk valve and piston contact, the intake cam is still installed but timing chain removed, if I turn it over out of timing. I believe the oil pump has to come off to find the bearing codes but will maybe wait to see how a few of the further back bearings look first. I dont have any assembly lube. Will wheel bearing grease be ok for turning the motor over by hand on the exhaust cam? ... quick google tells me wheel bearing grease is a bad idea! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So far been following the FCP Euro diys on the s55 valve cover gasket. Havent found one for rod bearings but the do have one for the n55 which should be similar. also referencing ISTA. oil pan gasket n55 bearings part 1 bearings part 2 Last edited by b_w.; 03-30-2025 at 11:56 AM.. |
