Trying to be the quickest is a short lived experience because every day something new is release (from various Brands) that pushes you further down the line. For me, it's all about how the car makes you feel. The sound of our V8 is something that is now lost to history, with more and more turbo/Eco hitting the market. It's actually an embarrassment for a Brand like ours that the cars sound is now being artificially created through the stereo system. I recently watched Mission Impossible Rogue Nation, and although the car was the new M3, the sound was all E9X. This is what will keep my E92 in my garage for many more years....

M3 vs M4

Wait a second…….I love my M3……2012 purchased new……..never in the snow or rain…..only 13,820 miles on it…..but…….I love the M4's performance……you want to trade ??? Only kidding……I am 70 but still love the thrill of my car…….washed it and waxed it on Friday……soon will go to sleep in the garage until April…..enjoy your new car !!!

I know it's a Electronic Damper function; but the steering still has an effect on how easily or hard you can turn that steering wheel based on the modes in EDC.

Do you have a E92 with out EDC and assuming ? or is my car just a freak of it's own.

This one I've noticed as well. My steering does change as I increase EDC setting. It is subtile but noticeable. Have assumed it is due to the dampers obviously changing.

Ps. Just had a quick look at BMWReg who claim:

"What type of steering system is used in the E90, E92 and E93 M3?
In addition, the steering is equipped with Servotronic variable power assistance that constantly varies the amount of assist based on vehicle speed. On M3s equipped with MDrive, two different parameters for the overall level of assist are offered: Comfort and Sport. On M3s equipped with both MDrive and EDC, these settings are linked to the three Electronic Damping Control (EDC) modes: Greater steering assistance (Comfort) is given when the EDC is set to Comfort mode and less steering assistance (Sport) is provided in both EDC Normal and EDC Sport."

http://www.bmwmregistry.com/model_faq.php?id=50#2

They do seem to be a pretty solud source but can't say I've confirmed this in BMWs doc.

Cheers

Among other things the non-bespoke engine drove me away. Other things mentioned by others above were also big negatives for me (noise, steering, not a rewarding/demanding car to drive).

The idea of buying a $80K car whose engine block is a modified 135i engine, and that a 135i can be had for $23K was hard to swallow to say the least.

Heres a pick of the f82 at Pocono

I can't agree or fathom how you'd think f80 has more manageable or predictable power?

I used to see a lot of similar threads like this one, but with people contemplating on going back to e46 m3 from an e9x. I remember people used to complain about e9x m3's weight and 'size'... I believe it just takes time for car enthusiasts to accept new concepts. To me however, e9x m3 is the perfect M car and I love every bit of it. Go with what you love and don't look back, just enjoy it.

People are actually going back to an e9x. I have not seen anyone who bought a factory new E92 and traded it in back in for an E46 in 2010.

I can see why you'd want to go back to the e92. I had an 09 e92 for 5 yrs before selling it to get an F-type. When I wanted to add another car to the garage I looked at c63 and m4. I was test drove the m4 on numerous occasions and was about to put down a deposit on a 2016 model until I test drove a used ZCP car and realized that e92 was the better car for me. I know have an 2011 ZCP e92 and love it. Here are the pics of the old and the new. Yes, they look similar.

Yes, the e92 motor IMO is more predictable the f80. You knew your power band in the e92 at all times but the f8x is a bit harder to grasp. The motor is pretty much useless past 6-6500 rpm and when heat soaks sets in that tends to change. I know all motors react different when hot but I found the f80 to be very inconsistent.

As far as manageable power? Try keeping her from going sideways at any speed under 40mph

I'm not a big F8x fan but that SO is such a great color for that car it almost makes me change my mind. In most other colors the M4 looks too boring and bland.

Maybe the M4 will grow on me in time, but I love the E92/E90, and I don't plan on getting rid of mine for a while. It's more than fast enough with some mods, puts a smile on my face every time, and is just a perfect all around car.

You wouldn't be the first thats for sure, I know tons of people that have already made the switch back, for the exact same reasons you are. I'm two months into ownership of my E92, and yes I did highly consider an F8X.

Part of me is sort of a numbers nerd, but it is always outweighed by a cars character. Mechanically, the E92 is a dream to feel, hear, and drive. I believe it to be a complete breed of its own. Doesn't really matter if there are things out there that are faster, nothing sounds, drives, looks, and feels like it to me. I wouldn't mind owning an F8X at all, but never in expense to this car. Every time I drive this car, it is an experience!

(incoming long read)

I agree, when the e92 m3 first came out I was not a believer! Too large and too refined for my liking in comparison to the e46s square traditional look. I think with time and the evolution of all cars the e92 fit more in its place as design migrated to this 'refined' look.

Now all things considered, in regards to past/future m3 I personally think the e92 m3 is the best.....refined enough to still fit in, in 2016 and with the sound and emotion (we once raved about in the e46) in comparison to 2016 and up cars of today. The overall feel is just so rewarding.

As soon as companies stop chasing hp/tq numbers which can only go on for so much longer will we start to get more emotion back in our cars. I mean we can only get normal 50-60K cars oh so much faster as they are already at what was once exotic territory. I'd like to see lighter cars with better suspensions then say more power...

TLDR e92 m3 is the best

How do you like that F-Type? I almost went that route after checking out the new M3 but couldn't stay away from the e92...I've got a Space Gray ZCP too.
