Fitment issue on 255/35/19 square setup
I just had a set of Sottozero 3s installed on my M3. I went with a 255/35/19 square setup, since that seems to be a popular configuration.
The front tires & wheels look fine, but the rears look awful. I knew the tire would be stretched slightly, but I didn’t expect the wheel to stick out as much as it does. Has anyone else running 255/39/19s on the stock 437m wheels had this issue? Could it be a mounting issue? Any chance the fit will improve once the tires break in? I’m tempted to cut my losses and buy 275s for the rear ![]() |

Thanks for the replies.
I had a feeling it might be a mounting issue. There's a whole thread about the 437s and winter tires, and none of the pictures look like this. Chetman, do you mind sending me a pic or your setup (if you have one handy)? I think I'm gonna go back to the install shop. |

Winter tires are stiffer and need more pressure to jump into the hump, specially a narrow tire on a wide wheel.
More pressure and warmer temperatures and the tire should jump into the hump. Do not drive like that! |

I'm also curious to see some other pics of 255/35 on the 10" 437m as I'm shopping for winter tires and still not sure what sizes I want to go with.

I believe chetman is correct. However this means that the backside of the tire should be seated correctly. Did you install them on your vehicle or did the shop you took them to mount them up? Either way someone should have noticed the front side of the tire did not match the rear side.
I have this wheel hanging up on my wall in the shop. Here's what it looks like- they did not get it over that hump on the front side. It is also partly that you're stretching the tire quite a bit too but still should have been caught during tire install. Although the more I look at your pic it looks like it should be seated. Only way to really know is to look at the backside of the wheel. |

I have 10.5" sitting on 265 tire, so tire is slightly wider than your 255, but my rim is also 0.5" wider. I bought the set used and the seller was using it on a narrower setup for an M2. I have that concern about rim sticking out, but it turns out the tire and rim is flush. Yours is definitely much more stick out...

I visited a specialty tire & wheel shop the other day, and they suggested that I get a set of winter wheels; so that's probably what I'll do. Tire Rack did offer to exchange the 255s if I decide to get 275s instead, but the guy I talked to at the shop reaffirmed my decision to go with a square setup. Thanks again for the replies. It snowed ~10 inches in Minnesota this weekend, and the car handles great. 2 thumbs up for the Sottozero 3s ![]() |
