Stone Guards in Front Wheel Arches?

Has anyone fitted stone guards in the front wheel arches to help prevent stones hitting the bottom of front doors and side skirt?

What do those stone guards look like? It's pretty annoying how much crap is coming of the tyres.

Has anyone done PPF on the side skirts? I considered it but didn't get it done in my car. I now have a deep scratch from a rock. Because of how deep it is I'm doubtful PPF would have protected against it but I'm curious to hear other's experience.

I've got PPF on the rocker panels (hopefully we're talking about the same thing), fenders, hood, and both bumpers. I ordered it from invisiblemask.com and installed it myself on my past two cars. It's not that hard since it's a simple surface without complex bends and it does provide good protection. Even if it gets damaged, several films "self-repair", and worst case you can just peel it off and install another piece.

My '15 got a good amount of rock chips before I installed the film and it never got any worse, even after 8 track days and a high speed trip through the gravel at Imola. My '18 got PPF the day after I got her home, and still looks pristine.

I second the Paint Protection. I've got XPEL and it's awesome.90% of my car is done, working on getting the last 10% done.

The need for PPF in that area (or the side skirts) will depend on the conditions where the car is driven (and the presence of spacers of course). I chose not to do the area behind the front tires and have no chips there 1.5 years later. IMO, the most important action on the F80 (doesn't seem to be an issue on the F82) is to replace the OE PPF on the rear fenders with much larger pieces. I wish larger pieces had come from the factory (even it it cost more). That said, I partially understand why BMW did not fit larger pieces; German roads are so good that after 700 miles driving during my ED, the car sustained no paint chips anywhere.

Just my two pence... I had the entire front end; wing mirrors; CF roof; rockers and rear wheel arches clear bra'd. Where did I get my first stone chips? On the upper sides of my doors. And then on my gas port door... and probably a bunch of other places that were not covered by the PPF. My wheels are also pitted in various places from rocks and debris. My point: if your car is a daily driver and you drive it hard, then chips and nicks and scratches are inevitably gonna happen. Unless of course you decide to wrap the entire car.

Yes - that's me. I make them and supply mounting hardware etc. - they directly fit in the OEM mounting holes. I've got a lot of happy customers, many of whom are in Canada! I shared with them my winter driving experience with these flaps and they were sold.

I will be making a how-to installation video as well but it's fairly easy. I can also install for those members located in NJ.

I'm happy to report that after months of driving with these the side of my car as well as the rear arch are much much cleaner! The best thing is that these flaps are completely removable and no signs of installations will be visible.

Here is the link: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...0#post23111490

Photos of both 18 inch winter wheels and summer 20s. 12MM spacers all around.
I also took the car to the track with these flaps and I noticed significantly fewer tire chunks on the car - the door was virtually clean.

My car is fully wrapped minus the roof....PPF is the way to go. Here in Colorado, there is so much fine sand that a windshield only has about 30k miles before it is pitted to the point of needing replacement. I now have 2 years and just over 12K miles and mine is pristine.

My concern was the following: I can spend $3k wrapping my car, but will it be worth $3k more when I go to sell it? Most likely no.
And the person buying it from me will understand a used car is not perfect, otherwise they’d be buying new. But they don’t want to buy new so they need to settle for imperfection.
Just my take that’s all.

You won't get the full value, but every car that I have sold with XPEL/PPF on it, I have received better than market value for it. The added advantage of XPEL is that many light scuffs from doors, backpacks or light bumps will do absolutely no damage.

The XPEL also makes it very easy to keep the car clean and looks better than clear coat since light scratches self-heal. All I have to do to keep my car pristine most of the time is run a California Duster over it and wipe it down with a detail spray. I only wash my car when the wheels get dirty.

IMO, it comes down to how long you plan on keeping the car. Two or three years, probably not worth it. Five to six years, I wouldn't go without it; especially here in Colorado.

You also don't have to wrap the whole car. I don't like seams, so I wrapped my whole car. My SUV only has the front bumper, hood and front fenders done.

very valid points

for me, I also think back at all the cars my parents used to own etc...they NEVER installed any paint protection and rock chips were never even brought up....I think we're more sensitive to this rock-chip fad because clear wrapping became so popular.

Nothing against clear wrapping - it's for some, but not for all. For me I just can't justify spending that much $ on it

those mud flaps don't look so hot.

PPF can be applied to the lower doors, the rockers, side skirt blades, etc. Whatever you want to cover can be covered.

PPF looks great and protects very well!

A few people asked me for an installation video. Check out below.
I understand that these are not for everyone. Some will like them some will not. But it’s good to have options out there. Thanks!

I meant on this particular car. On a WRX, yes. On this one, as stock as most are, not so much (IMO)

but, they do serve a purpose well!

Another happy customer sent over some photos.

You'd be amazed at how well these things work.

Please keep the negativity to yourself. Tommy made a purposeful solution for people that may not want to spend several thousands of dollars to protect with Xpel, Suntek etc. If it’s not something you like great but comments such as those are not necessary.
