S55 Billet Crankcase Breather
Thoughts and opinions on this? Saw this on the facebook forums, was quite useful for the N54 motor apparently. Anybody have any experience or ideas on something like this? (Originally writer's name of the post has been covered for privacy reasons)

That item was laughed off the Facebook group for being a fix for a non existent problem.
They shut down commenting on the post. |

That's why you shouldn't believe everything you see on the internet. I've have quite a few boosted cars over 1000 whp. Too much crankcase pressure is a real issue and all other engine platforms have the some type of relief system... Really high performance engines actually used vacuum to assist with ring seal etc.. Now go back to FB advice..

Doesn't fit on the S55. I purchased one to try to work around a PCV failure issue, didn't even fit. If it did fit, it would've chewed up the plastic valve cover. For a PCV that's stuck shut this isn't a bad solution but other than that, I don't see the point.

It does fit, but the clearance is tight. I've had one on my car for over a year, it works

Has anybody made a crankcase breather built into a catch can yet for this platform?

A breather is not desired on the S55 and most modern engines, so the oil isn't exposed to moisture in the air.

I'm curious what Billiam thinks, since on many of his N54 builds he has a custom built catch can with a two breathers. However that's the N54, not sure how useful a breather would be for the S55 platform. Do you think having a breather would really let in enough moisture in the oil if any at all to have any effect? Especially once oil is up to temp.

He does full-race builds, so the breather is appropriate, but they also change oil very frequently.
Yes, moisture cooks off, but the extra air circulation would still increase oil oxidation.

I've used these types of breathers on other platforms and found with the engine off there's enough heat to allow slight oil mist venting. Not a lot, but enough to dirty up an engine bay if not cleaned regularly. I get it looks kinda cool but somewhat of a PITA for a non-problem to begin with

Hey honestly I hadn't even thought of the consequences on newer engine bays. In older carb applications it was just more of an eye sore and pain to keep clean. But yeah on the newer stuff I guess you have to worry about contaminating wiring terminals and electronics.
No thank you! |
