damn yo. no one can do their job anymore. like i buy a 80k M car; and the shop "foreman" comes out and says its normal. SMH. Did he read that service manual. Everything has become a mcdonalds assembly line. Rare to find good help nowadays
That's right. For the clicking front strut, they did the SB twice and basically said it was normal. I raised hell and old them that there's no fucking way this is normal. Eventually another foreman checked it out and he said that's not normal and they did he deep dive and figured it out.

Glad you got it sorted, OP.

I didn't know about the front strut clicking being known - I think I have this issue too. I just figured it was normal... so I should probably have the dealer check it out?

Is there a bulletin or do we know what the fix for this is?

Interesting. Can you post this over in the M2 Competition section? A guy over there did a post-delivery inspection and found the same exact problem, dealer also told him it was normal. Clearly there is some disagreement on this. Could really help him out.

Wouldn't oil-based smoke be black?

went to honda dealer to get my new beater pilots oil change. had a coupon for 25 dolla 5w. and 35 dolla 0w....idk what oils goes in. SA...oh this takes 0w. I proceed to say which cars take 5w???.....reply-->oh some of the older vehicles...my pilot is an 03...

I say go with 0w since its winter... come back out... hasnt applied coupon...point it out and applies coupon i pay 35 and go home.

go home....read service report and 5w-20 put in...WTF...go back to honda...I can rechange it for you but youll have to wait 2 hours...I was like refund my money, ill change it myself...oh i cant do that wihtout manager... and he is getting so shook just discussing two different oil types....im at a loss of words, like can anyone do their fuckin job anymore? I know im being dramatic but like how stupid are people. WHY ARE YOU ATTACKING ME? is the new line for" I dont know what you are talking about, so I am going to totally flip this conversation backwards"

This dude writes up oil changes all day on a 6 model lineup and is totally lost on a basic oil convo.

I envisioned car dealers to be most knowledgeable... a greased up dude would come out the garage and educate me. not this day.
This dealership system is a fuckin joke and people think they are getting top service HA.

I don't want to get my dust shields replaced on the f80 because I am concerned theylll fuck something up.

I dont even rotate tires, since people just blindly roate without assesing wear pattern..

smh

I had the same issue, and they said it was build up. not oil leaking, but if it does get damaged or anything happens they would cover it without hesitation, Maybe the dealer you when is just pure trash?

I’ll have to add my name to the list. After all the labor just to get this picture, I'm guessing there are more of us with this issue that don't know it's happening. (Conspiracy theory) It seems like BMW knows this happens and intentionally built in a "Band-aid" to fix the problem in the skid plate. If you look at the image below, there's an indentation that looks the be a perfect oil pan to catch the leak of the turbo.

r0wr what was your resolution/fix? Luckily my dealer didn't really put up any fights...yet. They just texted me saying they need to order a new turbo line, whatever that means.

Add me. It's been wiped down here but mine looks to be minor compared to the photos in this thread. I'm at just about 31k miles on the car.

How many miles are on the car here?

I'm guessing you were at or around 35-36k miles when this was spotted?

I don't remember off the top of my head, around 32-35K.

Reviving this thread - had the skid plate off and noticed I had the same issue. Anyone have this recently addressed?

You know what, now that I'm looking at this I guess it doesn't really seem that odd. For context, my car is around ~40k miles and it seems that at some point the o-ring must have developed a leak and this is just blow-by that has accumulated over a long period of time. I'm taking my car to the dealer anyway, so I'll update the thread on if it ends up being anything other than the o-ring.

Specifically this o-ring (Part 4 of the first link) that seals the connection from the intake pipe (part 1 of the second link):

@RugbyBro if the intake o-ring failed you would have a boost leak since that's the suction side. You may have a turbo bearing starting to go, and the oil may be leaking out the lowest point. Is there any black oil spray up that charge pipe (not the inlet)?

I haven't checked the charge pipes, but they were off at a recent visit to the dealer to fix some valve tick and they didn't mention anything abnormal. It may be a minor boost leak, but if I'm honest I haven't noticed any reduction in power. I also haven't pushed the car very hard lately as I haven't had time, but it still feels as brisk as ever in street driving. I'll know more this week when the dealer takes a look. If the turbo is bad I guess I'll be leaning into CA's emissions warranty.

Confirmed today that it is a leaking intake (cold) side o-ring, part number 11657850066

Looks like I'll be DIYing this replacement. Doesn't seem too difficult, I'll remove the airbox and un-bolt the air intake pipe from the turbo, swap the ring, and re-install. Anyone have any feedback on that? Am I potentially missing something in the process?

This is awesome news because I have the same leak- when looking at my turbo it looks just like yours.

Please follow up with how you did it if you end up replacing anything else.

Check out this Kies video. The oil lines are at about 26:30. He's swapping out stocks to install Pures, but you can see how to do the r/r in the spots you need.

Definitely, just ordered the o-ring so it'll probably be a project for next weekend. May order a catch-can as well.

Sweet, looks like I can get to the bolts from the top and bottom. Definitely a helpful watch!

You think you can get do this whole job from the top? That would be sweet, make it an easy job- I am worried about having to fully pull the turbo which would be a lot of work

It looks like it may require getting the top bolt from the top and the bottom bolt from the bottom. If I can do it from just one of those ways then I will, but I won’t know until I do it. The turbo stays put the entire time, so no removal.
