M2C / Similar vs Civic 2015 F80?

Hey guys,

I have a very well sorted 2015 F80 6MT that I’m happy with, but being a car guy and approaching 2.5 years of ownership, I’m looking for a new (or new to me) car, possibly.

I always wanted the OG M2, but having two kids, the F80 was more practical. Now that my kids are getting a bit older and the fact that I don’t actually haul my kids in my car as much as I thought, I’m thinking the M2 may work for me.

Currently I saw some M2Cs that are within my budget, but I’m curious if It’ll be more of a lateral move than an upgrade from my 2015 F80. I’m happy with my F80 but if I were to sell it, I want an upgrade or a new experience. Thoughts?

The only and last time I drove an M2 was during a 2 day M school at Thermal in the OG M2. Driving the M2/3/4, the M2 was the most fun and engaging. I was in love. Now it’s been so long I’m not sure what to think.

I was also thinking about a used GT350, but from all the threads I Read on that, it seems to have quality issues. I’m planning on keeping this next car for awhile.

Budget is $65k, I need 4 seats and I want a manual.

TIA

Julian

The interior and especially the seating position in the M2 is not as good as M3 to me. I also feel F80 looks a lot better.

If you can swing M2CS then i would make the switch.

GT350 would not be a good daily at all and overall build quality is not very good.

I would say hold on to your car and get either the G80 or next gen M2.

Another option is 911 but for $65k you would be looking at 997 or higher mileage/older 991s. They will not be as quick as F80 but more raw, tossable and fun to drive.

You know, I would totally get a used 991 and even bump up my budget, but my wife REALLY doesn't like the "snobbish" stigmatism that comes with owning a Porsche. Shes so odd.

Although I like the M2CS, and I think it will be a classic, I don't think I'll want to spend $85-$90k on it. Just put a lil bit more money on top and I can get a nicely used 991.1 GT3.

I really dislike the G80 and have stated how the front grill looks horrible, yet I guess the G82 in frozen black or black in manual would be OK. The next gen m2 will also have hideous taillights no?

Hmmm first world problems..

Just after I made this post, I flashed the BM3 91 octane Stage 1 tune (from the CS tune) and took my F80 out for a drive and was smitten all over again. haha. Sometimes, just going out and driving helps with dilemmas like this =)

i probably wouldn't do it.

advantages of M2c -- shorter wheelbase

disadvantages -- cheaper inside, cheaper stereo, no CF roof, no HUD, no adaptive suspension, biggest of all no weight savings over base m3/m4 (30 pounds).

FWIW I liked the OG M2 better than M2C. The wheelbase is definitely more fun and accessible on the road, but I didn't feel like there was enough difference between the M2C & M3/4 especially since they are nearly the same weight. That's what ultimately turned me off and keeps me off the M2C.

Also, as intangible as it sounds, the OG M2 kind of has that pseudo-1M vibe going for it and I personally think it looks better (more classic BMW). So between the two variants I lean heavily towards the OG. Other than that, it's a 2 series, so it'll be a downgrade in a lot of non-performance ways (as mentioned already by others).

Have you sat in any M2 to assess whether the orientation of the driver seat bothers you? It’s same in m2c

Quote from 2016 era m2 review.

Quote:
"The seats are wonderfully supportive, though the driver’s seat is not centered behind the steering wheel. In fact, it’s also not aimed straight ahead. With the driver seated inboard of the wheel, BMW angled the seat — and especially the seatback — toward the left-front corner of the car. It’s a cheap trick, and one that only perfectionists would notice. BMW should still be catering to perfectionists."

I've driven the OG m2 at the BMW Thermal race track for 2 days and I drove my friend's OG m2 a couple of times. Never had a chance to consider the driving position, but it didn't bother me then. Yet I haven't daily driven it to see if it would bother me.

I re read your earlier post that 991.1 gt3 was in budget.

Seems like a no brainer to me to get that

I always advise people to never buy American....just look at Tesla and their fit and finish for their 50K or even 100K cars

Also...didn't you know that FORD stands "Fix Or Repair Daily" LOL

Haha. Its true. Theres definitely nits I can pick in my model 3P on that front

If you got some serious car OCD, makes sense to stay away and just buy the stocks or something.

That being said, I thought for sure when my street car budget went to $130k I’d get a gt3 no questions asked, but the 1100hp sedan that is advertised as doing the 1/4mil in the 8s has my attention

Drove both in DCT guise and M2C is much more hardcore and harder to control than M4 Comp. This is of course with TC completely off.

I like the M4 better because I can get away with more mistakes. You do not want spiky outputs in high speed maneuvers. For drifters however it is a different story.

Lol, not sure “hard to control” is ever a good thing

The ??? is, is it hard to control due it being too advanced for the user, or suboptimal setup (and FYI, my track car for last 3yr is Miata since since I was 10+ seconds off Randy P’s pace at big willow in my stock f80 )
