Lease End Buyout - Certify or No?

Hi all, my F80 lease ends mid June, and while I'd usually trade it in for a new M3, the new generation does not appeal to me, nobody nose why. So while I figure out what to get next, I am considering buying out my lease. I'd appreciate some input on my options:

1. Pay $2,200 to make the car CPO, gives one extra year of warranty, and it drops the APR to 1.9% for 60 mos.

2. Buy the car as-is, but the APR they're quoting is 3.9% for 60 mos.

3. Buy platinum warranty. How much does it cost?

Consider that I will most likely sell the car in a year or less while it's still under the original factory warranty. That said, I have to imagine that the car being a CPO makes it more enticing (and reassuring) to the next owner, or am I overthinking it? Thoughts/Comments?

I think 3.9% is too high right now for an auto loan, have you checked with your own bank?

IMO, I would skip CPO and jump straight to Platinum warranty. Depending on how many miles/months you want for Platinum Coverage.... range is from 4650~6350 from 1 additional year to an additional 3 years. Kinda feeling Platinum doesn't cover enough and gold is more than sufficient since it seems like Platinum covers iDrive and some interior bits. That's about it.

CPO gives you unlimited mileage if that matters to you but if you want to get the full 7 years, it's the platinum warranty ON TOP of CPO costs. So ~6350 + 2200 to get CPO with 7 year Platinum. It's stupid. So just go straight to 7 year Platinum or Gold and skip the CPO.

From 20,001 miles to 49,999 miles, the price is going to be the same. It's 1K cheaper under if you're under 20,000 miles.

You definitely want at least Gold since that'll cover things like gaskets and in case if you have a leaking Valve Cover Gasket or Differential Gasket. Price different between gold and plat at 7 years/100K is only 750 though.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I am using 100K mileage pricing. If you don't drive your car often, there is also a 75K max mileage option.

Thank you! This is very helpful, and I think I will go with the platinum w/ 75k max mileage option. I poked around, and see that there are plenty of options for around 2.5% APR without even trying hard. Thanks again!

I just did something similar with my lease buyout. I agree it's not really worth CPO'ing it unless you plan to sell it in a year or two which may incentivize a buyer.

I was up in the air on extended warranty and in the end did not go for it and instead just extended the maintenance with the Ultimate Care Scheduled+ ($899). Obviously nothing beats peace of mind so go with the warranty.

If you're on the fence like I was and if it's helpful, here were some of my thoughts that inevitably drove my decision to not get the extended warranty:
  • My car only has 13,000 miles on it and over the past year due to COVID i put maybe 800-1200 miles on it. I know for 2021 - 2023 I will also be putting extremely low miles on it the next few years as my company will primarily be WFH which has slashed my commute miles.
  • Given the extended warranty are based on in-service date and standard warranty is 4 years, paying an $4500-$6500 for an extra 2-3 years of warranty didn't work out math wise in my head. I couldn't justify the extra cost - I'd never hit the mileage mark e.g. 75/100k given my extremely low miles and logic/assumption would be less wear and tear.
  • Given the solid reliability of the F8x platform in relation to M cars has been very good and the likelihood of me having repairs of $4500-$6500 over the next 2-3 years with a) low mileage, b) completely stock seems very low.
  • Game plan after year 4 out-of-warranty will be to do all the preventive items. Plan to do the full crank hub solution and inter cooler/charge pipes as those are some of the "common" failures.
  • Last part of the decision was for flexibility - if I end up do selling the car before the end of the extended warranty and never needed to use it, likely wouldn't be able to get a refund.

Anyone know what's the difference between ultimate care scheduled vs ultimate care +2? Both are two years but price is 899 vs 3499 - the BMW website doesn't explain the difference or maybe i'm just missing it

i would go the cpo route if you plan on selling your car w/in a year anyways. the new owner can usually pay a fee to get the coverage swapped into their name. having cpo coverage should also help you sell your car once the time comes...

Ultimate Scheduled extends the basic maintenance program to 5 years and 75k miles. Ultimate Care +2 adds wear and tear coverage (MT clutch, Brakes, Wipers etc.) as well as extending the maintenance package to five years.

If you do decide to add one of the plans, I suggest emailing Christine for a quote. Here is a thread with her info. Great service and pricing!

And at $899, the scheduled is the much better value. Odds are most folks, unless they track, will not need brakes before the 5 year mark and maybe just at the 75k mark. Even then, if you have the standard blue brakes, they are less than the differential in price. As for the the $899 price, don't expect anyone to discount that because there is little margin. However, at that timeframe, you can expect one free set of plugs outside the original 36k period, and if you're timing it right and getting the car into service as early as possible and sometimes a tad before the service is due (hey, look at this possible warranty item and please service too), then you may end up with the 90k service done by 75k and a second set of plugs under the plan.

OP, if you plan on selling within a year, the market is still probably going to be a little crazy because of the ongoing chip shortage so why bother as the car should sell strongly.

Can the extended warranty or extended maintenance be purchased by BMWFS at lease buy out or does one have to go through a dealer?

I'm curious about this as well since my lease ends in two months and I'll likely be buying the car. My factory warranty expires in Nov. 2022.

It's cheaper through a dealer. BMWFS will charge you full price. You should be able to select it as an option on your BMWFS account (I saw it for mine before I bought my car out).

Just bought my car. Has to be done through the dealer but not every dealer will charge you the same price. Many will charge a lot more than BMWFS. But you can get it from any BMW dealership. I got it from one that advertises here on the site about it. Super easy.
The extended WARRANTY can be bought even after you buy the car. It can be bought anytime before the cars 4 year / 50K miles warranty expires.
