No worries, I can absolutely relate to that. I am normally a person who drives on their own as well. I love being alone in a car without anyone else on an empty road.

So absolutely no need to worry.

Not that lucky when it comes to cash
Already bought the ticket to the IAA. If I'm planning to spend two consecutive days in the IAA, do I need to buy two ticket (one per day) or just one ticket? I couldn't understand from their site.

I'll miss the oktoberfest this time

IF you want to visit on both days(14th and 15th) yes you need to buy two tickets. I believe only the press tickets are valid for the entire time the IAA runs(on press days 12th/13th on thru the 24th).

So order two of these....

Day ticket trade visitor (September 14 - 15, 2017)

Sad to hear you can't make O-Fest in Munich. But... I did a quick check and it seems Frankfurt also has a Fest going on while you are here!

Yes, same thing. You will need two tickets - one for each day.

If anybody reads these few last posts, I have bought a gift ticket which grants you with two consecutive days in the auto show. It costs 18 Euro instead of 12 for one day.

Just arrived back from my first day drive. Thanks a lot, both, Dackelone and eau_rouge!

Great road! At least the first part till sankt goarshausen. From sankt goarshausen there was lots of traffic so I couldn't drive hard.

The car is great. View is beautiful. Food in sankt goarshausen 5/10 but the restaurant was on the river so nice to sit there. No English :-(

Anyhow, I decided to give up the black forest this time so tomorrow I'm heading the same way.

The IAA was very nice. Actually, it wasn't that packed till 11:00 o'clock but from that hour on it is very hard to move in the most popular hangars.
Next time I'll male sure to plan for the first two days.
Day after I took the A3 till montabaur and from there drove till johannisberg.
I'm currently still at Frankfurt Airport. Will send photos and videos during this week

Hi again, :-)

Just bought a flight ticket to Munich from 1.4 till 4.4. Rented an f-type R.
I booked a Hotel in the northern part of Munich. A few hundreds of meters from the A9.
I thought of taking it till close to Nuremberg. Thought about Hilpoltstein. What do you say? Tried to look in Foursquare for a good place to eat along the way but couldn't find one.
Maybe you know a place?

On the Second day I'll drive south towards Kesselberg.

Humm... I live near Nuremberg so never really stop to eat when I drive to Munich because its only a 1:45 minute drive from my house to the BMW Welt.

I did find this small gasthof with pretty good reviews on Google... its near Hilpoltstein in Thalmässing. I've never been there though. It has some very good reviews.

Close to Munich I have visited this restaurant a few times. But it's really not that special. I'd say three stars out of five. It is located near Allershausen.

Hotel Restaurant Café Waldhof

The A9 Autobahn from Greding to almost Nurnberg/Feucht is one of my favorite autobahns for driving fast(when traffic permitting).

https://www.google.de/maps/dir/A9,+9...!1m0!3e0?hl=en

Be careful when driving direction Nurnberg... just before Greding where the autobahn separates traversing the mountain. The Polizie always Blitz on the Kimmie-berg... You will see there is a speed limit of only 80 kph... and they setup the camera on the drivers LEFT in a pull off area. It's pretty famous place to get Blitzed(ticketed).

A9, 85110 Kipfenberg...

The section of A9 Autobahn from Garching/Munich to Denkendorf is also a favorite high speed section of mine.
https://www.google.de/maps/dir/85095...!1m0!3e0?hl=en

Another possible place to eat at would be at the Audi Forum in Ingolstadt. The food is good and the Audi Museum is just next door. I took some friends there a few years ago and one of them still raves about the great schnitzel we had there! Plus they are open late until 11pm.

Audi Forum in Ingolstadt

In downtown Ingolstadt(five minutes from the Audi Museum) there are many good places to eat as well...

Weissbräuhaus zum Herrnbräu

or...

Schanzer Rutschn

Today we had a few inches of snow in the Nurnberg area. I am sure in Munich they had more snow. Sometimes even in April it can snow. So just be careful with your speed and know that there can be some salt and sand still on the roads. You should be able to experience some nice speeds on the A9.

Hope this helps your out.

Thanks. As usual, very informative.
I have problems with these local food restaurants that are not in the big cities. There's a possibility that they won't know English and last time, in sankt goarshausen, I had a very bad experience with eating in such restaurant.
What about Nuremberg? I'm sure there are good places to eat there. What about traffic and parking spaces? Do you think I can manage or will it be hard to maneuver and hard to find parking spot?
If there's nothing special, I'll find something back in Munich.

Thanks!

Great info! Thanks. I'll be there in late May for ED. We're in Munich a couple days before delivery. We're staying at a hotel close to the main HBF, so appreciate the recommendations.

Thanks a lot for the warning although I usually drive slower in the unlimited parts (because it is sometimes hard for me to understand from the signs where it is allowed) but never go above the speed limit when it is mentioned clearly and when all other drivers slows down to that speed.
Anyhow it is always good to know in advanced

End of Speed limits(and or Restrictions)although a speed limit of 130 is recommended.

You can also see this sign on a Bundesstrasse when there was a previous speed limit, no passing or some other "restriction". So this sign doesn't only mean to FLOOR IT, when you see it somewhere else other than on a Autobahn.

Sure, I can recommend a few place to eat in Nuremberg. What day of the week will you travel to Nuremberg ? And what time of day, do you think?

What kind of food did you want to eat ? I'm guessing German food, right?

You can find decent parking in a parkhaus(public garage). I have a few places in mind... but I would like some more input from you as to what kind of dinner experience you are after?

Under the Kaiserburg in Nurnberg is a nice cosy place. There are also a few cool places with some history to them as well.

Easter or Ostern(as the Germans call it) is on Sunday, April 1st this year.

All of the Bavarian schools are out(closed) from March 26th until April 7th. So there will be a lot of traffic(on the Autobahns and at the Airports) on the start and ending days of Easter vacation.

The good news is from Saturday March 31st until 10pm on Easter Monday April 2nd - no trucks will be allowed to drive on the Bavarian Autobahn! So the roads will be free from major traffic. But the Autobahn rest stops will probably be full of semi's trucks(called LKW's over here).

Btw... some German sign abbreviations...

LKW = tractor trailer truck
PKW = cars

Truck Exit - Keep free! (NO parking allowed - implied)

IF those signs said PKW... then it would be meant for cars.

Here is how the Polizei pull cars over... they do it by passing you first, then you see the BITTE FOLGEN (Please Follow) sign. Often times you might exit the autobahn into a safe place for the Polizei to talk to you. They can search your car and luggage or person... and they don't need any probable cause either to stop you in the first place. You might also be asked to produce the car's first aid kit, warning triangle and warning vest(for each person in the car). In the winter months(October thru April) you are also required to have a snow/ice scraper, winter windshield washer fluid and windshield wipers that are in good order(not worn out).

This is how the Autobahn Polizei pull you over... see 01:03

You hardly ever will see a marked police car on the Autobahn. Most of the time they use unmarked cars. The cars have multiple video cameras and the only clue that they are cops is a slightly longer radio antenna. And at Warp speeds you can't see that.

Basic rule of driving fast over here... Don't speed in construction zones(Bau-stelle)... the speed limit in construction zones is always 80 kph(and they will be posted) and this is always where the Polizei "look" for speeders. Often times they use a camera to take video or stills photos via photo radar... THEN IF they have a BIG FISH(+30 kph) they will pull you over down the highway - where it is safer to do so.

Also when the Autobahn intersects with another Autobahn... there often will be a speed limit, then it will go away after the crossing(interchange).

When it is raining... some sections of the Autobahn will have signs saying: "Bei Nasse 80 kph"... that means when raining... a 80 kph speed limit exits. You see these signs in areas where hydroplaning happens. You will also see a "End of 80 kph"... a faded 80 kph sign with the three diagonal stripes indicating the END of that speed limit.

Just a few signs to brush up...

This sign means the speed limit is AT LEAST 130 kph in this lane. Normally you will see two or three of these signs - depending on how many lanes that Autobahn has... it is telling you you need to drive at least this speed in that lane. ie: 130, 130, 80... which would mean, three lane autobahn with a minimum speed limit posted.

three lanes left side - two lanes right pic.
Left lane traffic allways moves to the LEFT. Right side lanes always MOVE to the RIGHT side of the road. The fines are now 200 euros for impeding an fire/ambulance or polizei in a traffic jam(Stau).

Btw... some German sign abbreviations...

LKW = tractor trailer truck
PKW = cars

Truck Exit - Keep free! (NO parking allowed - implied)

NO truck parking allowed!
Attachment 1771035

80 kph when wet. What is WET ? When you can see the tracks/tire marks on the wet road surface.

Same sign... just the electronic version. 80 kph(now, bc someone turned on this electronic autobahn sign).

This sign means the speed limit is AT LEAST 130 kph in this lane. Normally you will see two or three of these signs - depending on how many lanes that Autobahn has... it is telling you you need to drive at least this speed in that lane. ie: 130, 130, 80... which would mean, three lane autobahn with a minimum speed limit posted.

electronic Autobahn sign... normally blank(unlight) but this one is saying... 120 kph AND No truck passing. The little green arrow means the should can be also used as a driving lane(as in peak rush hour times) with a speed limit of 120 kph.

End of 110 kph.... new speed limit is 120 kph

It is very clear when you are explaining all those rules and traffic signs but in reality, I sometimes miss these no speed limit signs and the last sign I have seen is of 120/130 kph max speed. Only when another car or two are passing me at 150+ kph I know that I floor it.
Nothing to do, I'm sure that it is much easier when you know the roads
Anyhow, if I see these speed limit signs, as a first action, I always take down my speed to that limit. Even if I see other cars that are still speeding.
No one has ever showed me all these accessories you are talking about that the police can ask me to show them that they do exist and in good "shape".
I'll ask the guy who rent me the car to show me where they are. Thanks for that.
As for winter time, I have been told that it is a temperature issue and not date. Meaning over 7 degrees you do not need winter tires (or maybe this is only in Austria?). Anyhow, I have just remembered that the Lambo I rented had winter tires on and the R8 had summer tires. Maybe hat is why I have enjoyed better with the R8

I'll arrive on the 1st of April. On the 2nd of April I'm planning to drive north towards Nuremberg. I think I'll get there by noon time (12:00-13:00). Hopefully, as you mentioned, Autobahns will be empty or at least no trucks.

Thanks
