My first BMW was on the showroom floor, so I didn't need all of this.

And all of your post is excellent, great work!

Nicely done! Thanks for compiling this info. I actually used the original thread for all the tracking information for those long three months back when I had ordered my car!

Awesome job documenting the process. I'm gonna need it soon. Thank you!

Can you comment on how early one should start Step 1? Let's say I'm planning to do an ED in May 2016, which is about 8 months away. Does it even makes sense to ask a dealership now if they have allocations? I would think they want to sell their allocations sooner than when I need mine. Will they hold an allocation for me for that far in advance?

I think what you want to do is contact some of the higher volume dealerships once you get a few months away. You'd want to be getting an april build week. So february reach out to dealerships?

For a ED in May 16 you'd probably want an April build date, which means the dealer will get that allocation in March. There's no point in trying to make a deal now as they won't have that allocation and they'll have no idea how many they will get. Nor could they even sign any sort of deal for that far ahead. February might be a good time to start looking for dealers, start talking to them, get a feel for their pricing. Then come back in March and place your order.

Just an FYI - the M3 and the M4 will at some point go back to being "model flexable". At this current moment of me typing this in October of 2015, you cannot model flex an M3 to an M4 or vice versa. However this may change at a later date as it was on the MY15's.

On any rate - good job with this post. I can guarantee you there are plenty of dealership CA's that didn't even know this info you gathered!

Excellent work!

It's crazy, but I kind of miss the whole ordering process. I mean, it's great once you get the text/email that your car is at the dealership (I went in a bad snowstorm in North Jersey the day before Thanksgiving last year, with the baby, I just couldn't wait.), but the thrill of the build, and then the whole process of tracking and waiting and finally getting a new car at the end of it was a great experience. I had a very good contact at what turned out to be a great dealership, so I assume that helped a lot.

In short, I can't wait for the next one in two years!

I know this is kinda shady, but I've heard that you can get a better price if you agree on a price for a cash offer and then switch to ED after. Is that not the case?

Dude, great post. This is one of those internet gems that offsets the loads of horrible YouTube comments and all the ego driven arguments on forums.

Using the conservative numbers I should have my M4 in Seattle the third week of November. I dropped it off at Munich on September 26th. I'll report back to see how accurate the estimates were.

Great post BMWGuy.

Pay particular attention to Step 1 and Step 2.

If you've had a dealer who's been reliable and trustworthy before, DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Don't ever take their word. Get their offer up front in writing.

And, most importantly, do EuroDelivery. It's the best way to buy a BMW.

I think the opposite would be true, since ED pricing is lower than US pricing.

Very well done. I had two European Deliveries September 2014 arriving November 2014 and all you describe is accurate. I add only that once vehicles reached the California VPC accurate delivery info to Arizona was flawed with each arriving at times other than stated.
