hi guys, i almost done with 3 year lease my 2018 BMW 540XI, now i got to learn that the bought out price would be the same as residual value which means i could not talk about price with dealer, right? how to get best offer, as i really like to buy it after i finished 3 years lease. i check number then i found the 36 month* month payment+ residual value > MSPR which means i get to pay more money. which looks like not very cool. that is why i got to know buy it from beginning or just lease it. any suggestions? thanks guys

Residual was calculated as a FIXED % off MSRP.
Your payment was calculated as negotiated selling price minus residual (fixed) over payment term (including interest).
So, if Residual + 36 x payment > original MSRP, then you did not negotiate well in 2017...
Don't forget the taxes too (part of your monthly payment), in TX for example, you pay the tax on the FULL sales price, not the lease amount (sales - residual)

However, you can still negotiate the buy out price at the end of the lease.

I disagree - on both counts
1. It would be normal to have the residual plus the monthly payments to be higher than the MSRP - you are in fact paying interest on both the residual and the delta of the purchase price and residual.
2. You can no longer negotiate the buy out price on BMW leases. I believe this changed this year

Some reported that if you ask BMWFS directly, you will only get like 500 off the residual. But you are right that you cannot do a full on negotiation.

They say that if BMW finds out it went to the same household, they will charge the dealer the difference between what it was sold for and the residual (plus $500).

I'm sure there is a reason for this (not letting you negotiate a buy out on a car that has depreciated below the residual) - but as a BMW customer, I don't get it. Seems like you are harming your best customer so that someone else can get a great deal? Maybe so you go get a new lease?

Buy out price

Keep in mind that BMWFS sometimes provides incentives for the current lease holder to buy out a car if the market is saturated or otherwise non-existent for that particular model.

In our case, BMWFS offered a buyout price that was $6k below the residual value stated on the lease contract to buy out a 2017 BMW i3 REX a year ago. The discount was listed as a "Customer Purchase Promotion".

The i3 is a rare exception. No one was buying the leases out, the dealers got them for dirt cheap, so they might of offered that deal for a bit, but now because of maybe shady practices unless you buyout the lease on an i3 BMW is not letting the dealers buy them at all and sending all of them to auction.

I see that you are in Bay Area, CA too. I am curious if you have to pay any additional sales tax, registration fees and/or titling fees that is not included in the final BMWFS total payoff amount?

The statement indicates this: "Sales tax, registration costs and titling fees, unless listed above, are the customer’s responsibility." which I don't know whether we need to pay these and how.

At present, at the end of a lease, FS charges the dealer $500(?) plus the contracted residual if the buyer is the original leasee or anyone else at the same address. Otherwise they price the car at dealer “market” value for the dealer to purchase at a discount for resale. However, The dealer cannot re-sell the car to the original buyer, even if they buy it and put it on their lot. Don’t know how closely FS tracks this, but my understanding is that’s the rule now. BMW wants to get you into a new lease.

BMW had said that if they discovered it was re-sold to original buyer, the dealer would be on the hook for the full amount (or the difference between what they got the car for and what they should have paid for it).

Of note, they (BMW FS) would not negotiate the buyout, but during these times, lots of people have been getting incredible offers from BMW to buy the lease out at a reduced price. So a touch better - but I think with used cars going up in value of late, that probably ended?

Has anyone made any headway on how to get the best offer on this topic? I don't want to sound like too much of an opportunist, but I heard that they were deferring payments for people due to the current state of things. Are there any deals for lease buyouts as well?

As of a few months ago, yes, BMW had started offering great deals on lease buyouts. But then production stopped (of new cars) and used cars got hot - so I'm not sure they are still doing it still. Maybe someone else can say if they have seen this in the last few weeks?

Thanks. I actually called and got offered a $3k discount so I'm happy with that.

Also got an offer I could refuse on a lease buy out. 2017 BMW M3 non-comp pack, exec, BSM, black leather, 35k miles and I had some mods on the car when I assumed the lease. BMW FS offered the buy out at $39,200. Wish it was a comp pack but it was much easier than finding a used on on the market that was cheaper.

I was offered by BMW FS $5,500 off as a Customer Purchase Disct. on my 2018 F80 with comp and exec packages. Makes it pretty darn good deal in my mind. Car only has 13k miles. Question should I do anything on the warranty front, try to extend, purchase after market, etc.? I tend to not believe in purchasing warranties but thought I would ask.
