Lane Departure Warning - how is it supposed to work?
I have never gotten this to work so today I did a controlled test.
I got the car to 45 mph, put it in cruise and tried to drift a little without using the turn indicators. The two arrows showed up in the central display indicating it was able to track the lanes. When I drifted, sometimes, the arrow would go off on the side I was drifting. But I am not sure I felt the steering vibrate. Atleast I couldn't tell any difference beyond the normal vibrations of the steering wheel on rough roads and the rattling that happens when I go over the metal markers on the road. I had the steering and suspension in comfort mode. How much are you supposed to feel the vibration? Also is there supposed to be a audible alert or only the steering feel vibration? |

Mine vibrates abruptly and noticeably letting me know I'm drifting. I find it useful on long drives. If you activate your turn indicator then it doesn't work obviously.

You get a warning if you leave the lane and a lane marking is detected. You should feel the steering wheel vibration as others have said. You can read up on it in the owner's manual too.

My wife's Merc GLE will jerk you back...not fun. The wheel vibration is plenty to let you know you're drifting, which I do often, usually on open roads. I was trained to drive more in the middle of the road as I grew up in an area where deer liked to run in the road. I keep that off in the M4 unless like someone else stated, it's a long drive.

^^ what he said. I find it actually annoying in everyday situations like an empty on-ramp when my spirited clipping of the apex tends to use the entire paved surface and includes crossing both the inside and outside lines . Nice safety feature though for long freeway drives.
