It has something to do with not wanting to step over the M5's toes

M3 can't be more power than M5...

we surely dont want that to happen, or at least they dont want it to happen.

And plus 6 cyl to claim fuel economy... Corvette doesn't care about fuel eco... and it would be blasphemy for the Corvette to get anything less than the V8.
Corvettes don't care about fuel Eco? My dads c5 would get 33mpg on the highway. His current c6 zo6 gets 26. An updated v8 engine should be going into this car with a lightened body. This is not going to be doing much better than the current v8 in terms of mpg. The m5 isn't much better than the previous and still has a guzzler tax. Pathetic.

What's with all the negative nancys around here?
It's called realism actually.

The F series is not really lighter than the previous generation, unless you think a questionable 50lbs is a triumph.

The only M version which weighed less than the base car was the 1M, at I think 77lbs less. That is mainly because the car comes without a sunroof. There is simply no way to make the car massively lighter without throwing away luxury features and seats and stuff, something BMW is just unwilling to do. A carbon roof saves 20lbs or so, the M seats are heavier, aluminum hood nets you a few pounds, you name it.

I am a loyal BMW owner, 3 euro deliveries so far, and would like nothing better than to go for the fourth one. But consider this: more people bought the current one *because* of that engine, than were turned off by the poor gas mileage. And I don't see them being very serious about weight loss except in the i series.

Don't worry about the sound...BMW will put some Bang & Olufsen speakers under the rear bumper to take care of that.

Seriously, this car will be the sh**

You must be kidding?

1. Most brakes squeak a bit when hot.
2. The M3/4 will almost for sure NOT be coming with carbon ceramic brake rotors. They are simply too expensive.
3. It wouldn't be a bad idea for BMW to offer them as an option though. Again it would be a small fortune.

I was at the 'Ring all day on the 25th and I didn't see it running. They must have brought it out at lunch time.

Sound is horrible. I think my 135i with the Performance Exhaust sounds better. Certainly my M3 does.

I think it will be at least as fast as the GTS on the 'ring
CCB as an option would be great too
Related to the sound, there will be a lot of good aftermarket exhausts!

@ BMW prototype workshop in the FIZ. (where the first prototypes are prepared for testing) there is two Silverstone II M3 Sedans awaiting their camouflage treatment for the first FEP cars.

Uhm.. yes it is. The F10 M5 is a lot better than the E60 in terms of fuel consumption. The E60 used more fuel than an aircraft carrier..

I know that hot brakes squeak. I go to the track a couple times a year. But this sounds like a ceramic brake squeak if you ask me. I am pretty confident that this will be an option for the new M3. (Or maybe as a performance part)

with numbers as low as they were for the e60 M, 30% better with the new f10 is hardly a lot

I personally prefer the high pitch scream of an F1 car rather than the throaty/grunty moan of a NASCAR. Too bad most hypercars/supercars/high-end performance cars (including this new M3) belong to the latter rather than the former...

If you can identify brake rotor material from the sound spectrum of brake squeal then hats of to you (no pun intended). I'd be willing to bet though that in a true blind test you would bat just about precisely .500 in making the call on the material. One reason for my belief is that brake squeal is more of a function of the pad as than the rotor, cast iron or carbon ceramic.

While I see where you're coming from, I think that 50 lbs saving for the F30 is a triumph for a few reasons off the top of my head:

1. New car is bigger
2. New car is stiffer
3. New car is safer
4. It's the first time in generations the new gen 3/5/7series has been lighter than the one it replaced.

300 lbs would be even better, but this 50lb saving shows that BMW have finally got serious about the weight issue and, with CF-tech and pricing moving along, in 6 or 7 years the savings could well be up in the 3-400lb range.

Maybe the F80/2 will do a little better than 50lbs too, we will have to wait on that.

First of all, I am not at all sure the F series is actually lighter than the one it replaces. Automobile magazine or some other rag put a new 335 on the scales and it came to about the same as the old one.

And no it's not a triumph because the F30 drives worse than the E90.

To me, for a performance automobile weighing in at around 3600-3700 lbs, 50 lbs is absolutely nothing worth bragging about. If on the other hand BMW came out with a 3200 lbs special, I would not only tip my hat off, I'd probably buy it.

You are right, it's too early to pass judgement, I'm simply saying the early signs are not positive for a guy like me.

+1

At least right now people have the option of high pitched F1 scream vs NASCAR sound (M3 vs C63). Most of us can't afford a Ferrari.
