Highest dry grip street tire for 19s in 2020?

Hey all,

Did a quite a bit of searching before this, but want to confirm or maybe learn something new before purchasing.

I've been on 18s for the last 3 years. Just bought my first set of 19s for the M3 to open up the tire selection. Some details:

Front: 19x9.5 +21
Rear: 19x10.5 +35

Stock tune with potential for flat torque tune with stock level midrange, lowered on MP HAS. Front is max drop, rear is not dropped much, I'd guess maybe -8 to -10mm from stock.

I'm looking for the grippiest street tire for the dry and 50+ degrees F that doesn't need heat cycling. Just want to mount and drive. I have a set of Conti ECS tires and snow tires to cover the other temps and conditions.

From what I've read, I have so far decided on RE-71R 265/35/19 front and 285/35/19 rear. Is this the right tire given my constraints, or is there a newer or better tire that's worth looking into?

Thanks in advance for any and all feedback.

I too am about to drop some $$ on some new rubber for the front of my F80. I was debating between the Re71r and the AD08R. I run the AD08r on the front of my fwd club car and the grip is phenomenal in the dry and fantastic in the wet. I was considering the RE71r because i wanted to try something different but after reading another users review on here (i think it was from 2016) about how noisy the tires were I've decided to stick with the AD08r. Just my .02 cents.

On a 10.5 inch rear wheel, you can fit a 295/30/19. I’ve ran the AD08r and is pretty grippy, although LOUD/whines after 3-4K mines with camber plates. The noise is high pitched and super annoying. Re71r are also similar in noise. Tbh my favorite tire so far is the Michelin 4S...on street, the same acceleration grip as the ad08r, but no noise!

I have the RE71 and boy are they annoying for a street tire. It sounds like you are driving on Velcro. The noise is pretty ridiculous. The ride isn’t comfortable either. I also have Cup2s and they are pretty useless unless it’s above 70 degrees outside.

PS4S is the way to go. It works well in the hot, cold and wet. It’s the benchmark tire to beat.

Thanks all. I ended up with the RE-71Rs. Just mounted them yesterday and took the car out for a drive.

Coming from 18s on Continental ECS, my initial impressions are that it's much more comfortable of a jump than I thought it was going to be. A tad stiffer, but much more comfortable than I expected.

It was 52 F and dry, and the car still gets minor flutters from TC in 1st, but pretty much hooks all the way through 2nd without a flicker from TC. So overall, I'm happier with the grip now.

Also, maybe it'll take time to notice it, but I honestly don't hear what everyone else is complaining about with regards to the road noise. Maybe it'll take warmer temps to notice, but I'm sure that will only mean more grip for me, so I'm not really worried about it. I still have my stock set with ECS if I ever go on a road trip.

It's going to be 64 F today, so very excited to try them out with better temps.

EDIT: Tires are even better at 60+ F. With stock exhaust, I still can't hear the tire noise others are referring to. On newer asphalt, I hooked completely in 1st, through the huge midrange punch, without a flicker from traction control. These tires rock. Going to be a very fun summer.

I ran RE71R on my F80 and the road noise wasn't bad at first, but as the tire wears down, the road noise gets louder and louder. I had MPSS front tires and RE71R rear tires at one point and even with my M performance exhaust with the valves stuck open, i could easily hear the rumble of the rear RE71R tires. The RE71R tires lasted me about 4000 miles of street driving and the MPSS lasted 25,000 miles. All street driving/no track days.

Same goes with the Nitto NT05 and R888 tires. Both of them also have a noticeable amount of road noise, but with those types of tires, it comes with the territory. The NT05 was noticeably louder from the get-go.

For the Midwest, Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+

If you see a Mineral White F80 when driving around Chicagoland taking a curve at 120mph+ in 30-40F weather ... 99% probability that its me.

All Seasons are jack of all trades, masters of none tires. Not recommended for high performance vehicles unless you don't have means to swap tires between season. Winter tires for the winter and summer tires for the Summer

OP: MP4S 265/35/19 front and 295/35/19 rear are what I would run (I run MP4S on my personal street/track E90 M3). If you want even more grip in the summer, go with Cup2 same size. Keep in mind these tires should never be run under 50 degrees and if exposed to 20 degrees, you must allow it to warm up above 40 for 24hrs.

RE71R 265/285 work as well.

Also with COVID-19, look into mobile tire companies who can swap your tires at your house. Just park it outside, they do the rest. No waiting in some lobby with a bunch of strangers.

Thanks. As I mentioned, for my 19s I ended up with RE-71R 265 front/285 rear. It's a big improvement for a no-headaches "mount and drive" tire.

So far I'm happy with my new wheels and tires, but I definitely miss my stock 18s. They're perfect for the look I'm going for, but I'm unwilling to go down to a lower sidewall. Attached before & after photos.

I am also looking for a better dry performance tire. Ps4s I have currently. there are tons of people saying their r888, cup 2, and trofeo are far better just for "street". To my understanding, if those tires doesn't reach over 120f, it performs worse. But still people saying it's better. So my question is, are those streetable track tire really better? Around temp 70-100.

It's really tire dependent. cup2's are glass unless they are at least 75f, r888r are so sticky they still work well for grip on-street and are even grippier once up to proper temp. Trofeo are $$$$

Thank you

Funny you say that, I had 18 inch TE37s before these. Loved them, but the color I chose got too dirty too quickly from the brake dust, so they almost never looked like the metallic gunmetal I bought them for. I haven't found any wheel that I've really liked since then, but these in silver really caught my eye. With the lip I only think they look good in 19s or higher though. But I really like them

So r888r is actually good even if temp doesnt reach?

Actually trofeo is only 50 more than r888r and a lot of trofeo are close out, tire rack does 50% off on them. I just order some

I've driven about 15,000 miles on RE-71R tires street and about 5 track days - and these tires are great - way better traction than stock MPSS.

As far as noise - I also have not noticed increased noise except when driving over road seam repair patches (at which pint the tires make a high pitched sound that you don't hear with MPSS). Otherwise - the traction improvement in street and track driving is YUUUUUGE! Love these tires!

Driver mod = Jack of all tires

Have you driven a car with A/S 3+ before? I've got 151mph in light pouring rain in them with no hydroplaning. They cost on par with 4s and MPSS at around $250 per tire, and I go through them every 4 months, so do I qualify as having the means?

No one in there right mind drives their M3 for performance purposes in a snow blizzard, so not sure why I would ever want to buy winter tires. And you clearly must be from the Midwest because on average, Chicago will see 14 days that hit 90 degrees or more, according to ABC7 Chicago's Meteorologist Larry Mowry. So tell me about summer tires?

(1) A/S 3+ has a UTQG rating of 500, it should last 20k mi even with aggressive driving. Either your alignment is eating your tires up or you like to do burnouts, because they should last you more than 4month.

(2) Summer tires are rated above 40 degree F, as you drive it heats up even more and get even stickier. You'll be surprise how hot tires can get when driven aggressively, I normally see 180+ tire temp on the track.

(3) MP4S has superior grip over A/S 3+ in dry and comparable wet performance above operating temp. Added bonus is MP4S are a few summer tires that you can also track with on the weekend and drive it home. A/S 3+ won't last more than 2 20min sessions.

(4) You should enjoy your car everyday, rain, snow, or shine. These cars are built in a region that sees worst weather than Chicago and they're meant to be driven. They will not melt in the snow, just put proper snow tires on them an enjoy. Your A/S 3+ will not stop as well or accelerate as well as true snow tires in sub freezing / icy / snowy condition.

(5) No one says anything about those who aren't swapping tires don't have the means. Some people don't have storage space and don't want to deal with the headache of doing so. I use a wall tire rack unit for storage and a mobile tire company to swap all my cars out in April and October. If you keep your car for more than 2yrs, you'll end up going through a set of winter and a set of summer so the cost is the same as using one type of tires once a year.

Here's one of my previous cars in the winter. Snowy/icy out and 5 degrees temp, I drive all my cars year round.

When you use the proper tires for each season, you can enjoy your car to its full potential without limitation of the all season tire compound.

To those who store their cars away when it snows out, you're just preserving it for the next owner.
