Poll: How many of you spun the crank hub?

Yes, I know, I know ... there are tons of threads on here from people either asking "when am I going to spin my crank hub", "if I tune, will I spin my crank hub", etc, etc...

Yet, with all these threads no one truly knows the percentage of cars, tuned or stock, that have spun their crank hubs. So I hope this thread will help put some numbers to it ...

Please post year, mods, mileage, and if you spun your crank hub. Hopefully, we can get some real data and put this question to rest.

Yes, I know there could be other factors at play, but this can give some insight into the real-world chance of this happening.

I'll go first ...

2020, 3600miles, Intake/chargepipes/Catless DPs/no tune, no spun hub

There are a number of polls on this. Here is a good one that not only breaks it down by stock/tuned, but year also:

If it spins it spins and you shouldn’t worry about it.
If you worry about it there are ‘solutions’

It might even be more common for people with issues to search topics for it and people here might power and drive their cars above what it was made for more so than average joe which could increase the cases as well.

I would disagree with your statement "if it spins it spins" due to the fact that the repair(s) can be quite pricey.

Im really just trying to understand the "chance" of this happening regardless of year/model... just a raw number.

For example, if 95% of the poll takers didn't spin their hub, then there's a small chance it happening to me or anyone else for that matter.

We already know that there is a low chance.. don’t want to spin your hub? Don’t tune. You still might spin it anyway. Don’t want to spin your hub at all? Get some sort of solution.

I looked at the polls that were referenced earlier and found that it was something between 8%-10% of people polled that had spun. It also looked that the majority had been tuned though

I did the full solution, cost me 3K (with tax) for

install the hub
new spark plugs/install
alignment
Oil change
new bmw 1 time use parts

I inspected my stock hub, still looked good, I never drove in shift mode 3 and my tune was extremely modest.

That's fairly cheap, who did the install ( location) and which hub did you use?

With CBC it can still spin. Found out from another user on here. If you’re looking for a closer to 99% solution, it would be upgraded crankhub WITH CBC.

This doesn't include the cost of the CH part right, Just labor?

And I drive in s3 24/7 (stock) hopefully that doesn't spin mine

Right, so If you wanted to add that in, I got it on black friday for half off, so my total is $3,400.00 with the hub and capture plate.

Right, that's the ultimate solution. I saw Chris@VTT post saying that he hasn't seen/heard of a <600whp car spin with just the CBC in the past year. There are cases before that, but as someone only looking to run BM3 stg 1, it's certainly encouraging.

I was planning to do the whole hub but after thinking it out - if, in the off chance, it spins with CBC($100), chances are low that it's going to bend a valve. At which point I'll beef up the hub and retime. If it spins and I do waste the motor, a freshly rebuilt block is only about $5.5k(https://www.ghassanautomotive.com/pr...bmw-s55-engine)
