Oil cooler recommendations

Hi everyone,

If I wanted to replace my engine oil cooler to drop oil temperatures, what is everyone's recommendation? Should I try another stock cooler from FCP Euro? Are there any aftermarket ones (Mishimoto, C&R Racing) that are a noticeable improvement over stock? Tech thinks that my oil cooler may be gummed up and blocking airflow after 7 years of driving.

Considering how well the stock cooler keep temps under control even on extended track sessions, I'd start by cleaning it. If you remove the underbody panel, remove the bolts holding the oil cooler in place, and let it come down you'll probably find all kinds of debris on it blocking the airflow. Clean that up real good and go from there. If you want oil temps lower than stock, look into an aftermarket oil thermostat.

Most of the aftermarket units are ig friendly pony show pieces from China.

Refresh with OEM or consider C&R.

Is internal fouling even common? I agree with cleaning the external debris and go from there.

What proof is the tech giving you? The stock thermostat will keep the oil temperature of the S55 at exactly 226f. 186f or so in Sport+.

If you are just puddling around town and you are hitting 250f+, then you may have a stuck thermostat.

Anyone have the Mishimoto? My stock unit is slightly bent. Figured if I want to replace, might was well upgrade to something with a bit of extra capacity and cooling.

Not needed. BMW has been using the same oil cooler design with the new G8X, M5, X5M, etc. They've done a great job of keeping the engine cool even at the track.

Order a stock one from FCP Euro and get a lifetime warranty with it. The plus with this is also the stock one isn't made in China like Mishimoto haha

Without temps hitting 212f (100c) on a frequent basis, you are increasing the rate of oil oxidation and acidity due to water content and fuel not burning off properly during driving.

That's why I run on only Sport mode now, so oil can reach the required operating temperature of 226f to optimize oil life and combat fuel dilution.

Cooler oil isn't always a good thing and can be detrimental to engine wear. I had much worse engine wear readings on Blackstone oil analysis running on Sport Plus all the time and keeping engine oil temps at 186f all the time. My fuel dilution was higher and my engine wear was much higher than normal. This was also due to me running E85 and creating a lot more moisture in the combustion process, which wasn't properly being burned off due to the cooler oil temps.

Keep in mind modern synthetics can take a beating and withstand much higher temperatures. Normal BMW engines actually operate closer to 240f as standard for fuel economy purposes, so LL-01 oils will easily handle 240-250f oil temps on a routine basis.

My wife's N55 operates at close to 250f. She ran on full e85 and her oil analysis came back spotless after 5000 miles. Blackstone said she could take it up to 7000 and be fine. Whereas for me, in Sport Plus all the time, I killed my oil after just 2700 miles per Blackstone.
