M Performance Exhaust Crack

I was ready to purchase a 2015 M3 with MPE but after doing some research on the exhaust, some owners have encountered cracks. The seller is now having it replaced under warranty.

Has BMW remedied this problem by updating the part with holes to reduce pressure. This was done to the E92 MPEs V2.

It’s a great exhaust, but I prefer not to deal with a consistent issue if there’s no permanent fix.

From what I understand, BMW has not done anything to remedy the issue. I've had mine replaced once thus far. Some users have had theirs replaced multiple times, but it seems to depend on how you drive.

If you're buying an F80 with one already installed, I'd say go for it as long as you're not paying a premium for accessories. You can always upgrade later.

Better question might be... anyone that has had it for at least 1-2 years without a crack?

I had a mpe replaced under warranty but i only put 300 miles on it so far. So I can't tell you if it's a newer version or it is the same one as before. Welds looks great on the exhaust though.

Personally - no. I do not have a MPE.

I said that because coming from the E9X M3 world, where this was also a major issue.

Is it from the hangar placements? Maybe the exhaust moves around to much (vibration)? I'm not familiar with its mounting, just throwing some ideas out.

General consensus is that the cracking is due to the thin Ti sidewalls on the muffler. The welds on mine were fine. It was cracking under the welds.

Alright. I am about to purchase a brand new MPE. I understand it comes with a two-year warranty, so I am not concerned about the cracking issue during the first two years. My question pertains to repairs that have to be done after the warranty period expires. When it cracks is this something that can be fixed by re-welding the area that has the crack or is it necessary to replace the entire MPE system? I just don't want to buy a product that has the potential to become disposable after two years when the warranty is no longer in effect. Thanks!

There seems to be two different problems occurring based off the other threads regarding this issue. Stuck valves and cracking titanium sidewalls. The cracking can be remedied by using a qualified titanium welder, but another member on this forum had to add a few supporting braces because his exhaust cracked even after re-welding.

I'm not exactly sure if a stuck valve can be repaired or if a full replacement is necessary. When I had mine replaced, both problems occurred.

The cracked MPE's I have seen in pictures looked like they have been through some serious heat (discoloration). I keep my valves open 98% of the time and my MPE still looks brand new after a year and 11k miles. I wonder if that's the key to preventing the cracking issue but I guess time will tell.

The other thread mentioned a revised MPE with a different part number planned for June.

They will cover it after the 2 years as it is a known issue.

I think it is 2 years or the duration of your car warranty, whichever is longer (if you have 5 more years left of warranty, it'll be covered for 5 years).
