Michelin PSS in cold wet conditions
Anyone have experience with running PSS in 38-50 degree weather, with the addition of possible rain? Concerned with traction during the winter time as it is my daily. I'm used to always being in 80 degree summer weather, which is why I bought these tires. But now I will be moving to Seattle area so I wanted to get a general consensus before I switched to Continental DW06 tires.

I've had PSS in temperatures as low as mid-30s. And I've had the car in the rain quite a few times over almost 6 years of F8X ownership. I honestly have never had any issues with them at all. Obviously, you can't and shouldn't go the same pace as when its warm and dry; but overall i haven't run into any unusual traction issues either way. I often like driving in the rain to play around with the rear a little bit and even with DSC completely off the car has a high traction threshold (again, when driven at normal speed limits)

If 38 is your lower limit you'll be fine on PSS in wet, as long as your careful/sensible. Grip will be a little down obviously.
If you do end up getting a cold weather set, I would suggest Mich PS AS3/4 or whatever is current. They are grippier than the DWS06 and the sidewall is no where near as floppy. DWS06 on my e38 gets very out of round easily if parked for just a few days, more so in cold weather. Need to keep them at ~40 psi to keep them in shape, or I get vibrations. Never an issue on the AS3+ at ~32 psi, in all temps including below freezing. The only compromise is I wouldnt get them if you expect to need to deal with any snow. Cold/wet no problem though. |

I was definitely comparing the AS 4 to DW06. Mixed reviews for both honestly. If anything Ill just stay home when and if it ever snows. I don't plan to take it to the mountains, as I have my girlfriends car for that. Maybe at the most Vancouver.

PS4S are pretty bad in 50 and below. PSS are even worse.
I would probably get all seasons for the winter and get PS4S for the summer. If you drive very sensibly, then just about any tire will do as long as there is no snow involved. But I certainly wouldn't push it on a summer tire when it's 50 or below out.

Comfort throttle in cold temps helps keep you from breaking traction all the time. I’ll keep driving into the negative degrees as long as the roads don’t have snow
I did drive MPSS in light snow a couple times this year just to try it, I didn’t die but it was like dancing on ice lol That’s in Indiana though When I lived in Seattle I used summer tires year round on my cars without issue, the snow only lasts a day or two at most |

have driven pss and ps4s in chicago winters which are colder than seattle winters. on dry pavement they're fine if you're careful but certainly not ideal (for your safety and also for the tire compound i would imagine). would not recommend in wet/snow/ice.

I was able to drive through Sequoia National Forest during a snow storm end of December few years ago on PSS. Was unable to go past certain point because Caltrains required snow chains on one of the roads through Sequoia to Las Vegas. I was more careful and easy on the throttle. Didn't slide or lose traction. And I'm still alive!

Have run pss and ps4s in rain and down to 40 degrees frequently . Use these all year around but we don’t get snow where I live. Both have been fine.
Only issue I’ve had was in heavy hail. No traction at all and needed to park. . |
