Ridiculous. What a stupid problem to have. BMW really dropped the ball on this.

At Tuning Dynamics we've seen failures from bone stock to heavily modified.. and some just casually leaving a stop light.. there is no rhyme or reason which makes it 10x scarier IMO but that sound of having no compression is definitely one you don't forget.

The sound of no compression does this usually indicates that the valves got bent during this process?

Not always. Turns out my valves were fine just out of time.

I am looking at crank hubs, I have narrowed it down to Precision Dynamics or Gintani. They look to be very similar, I am looking for pros and cons of each.

anyone else have my experience… (if i'm in the wrong forum section sorry)

i did a pull getting on to the highway, it was 3rd to 4th full and when i let off at the end of 4th i got the drivetrain malfunction error. my car did not go into limp mode or anything, no full loss of power, simply kept driving slowly and went back home. i turned the car off and back on, there is no rough idle or noises it sounds normal and the message disappeared.

at the same time i'm having charge cooler problems because my cooler is bone dry so i have to upgrade. could it have been because of that or not at all? should i be worried because i got the message or should i still be able to casually drive it? let me know if any of you had a similar situation, either way i'm paranoid and going to spend a pretty penny to upgrade the crank hub and charge cooler.

I'd like to ask you a few questions about your hub choices and status. Your PM's seem to be disabled. Should I ask here in this thread?

I'd go with the Insane over those two. Smaller drill holes same single one piece design but, there are way way more of the insane on the road + multiple 1000+ hp cars.

Precision Dynamics is the strongest and only true keyed solution.
Check these videos to see why.

This is the same one I have. Basically a single insane hub with a larger offset single key instead of 2 or 4 pin. I don't see any advantage because pins are not snapping off when drilled properly. To each is own I suppose.

I ended up going with Gintani as that's what the shop I used had the most experience with.

Since I got it back I have had zero issues. I added an EL resonated midpipe, BM3 flex fuel kit and a Carey Jordan Flex fuel tune. I now enjoy lighting up the tires in 3rd on demand without a care in the world.

Anyone debating getting their crank hub upgraded should just bit the bullet and get it done this winter. There's no worse feeling than the out of time sound, stall, fuel smell when cranking (stupidly I know) trying to restart and then the realization of what just happened.

DCT guys like me get bonus poo thrown in their face too. Nothing like jacking up a car on the side of the road to take off under panels just to release a cable and zip tie the dct linkage arm up. BMW really screwed us F8x guys by not providing a neutral override of some sort.

Well it looks like I already voted it in this poll, but add another 2018+ 6MT 550+hp(i think) crank hub failure. Spun my hub a few weeks ago. No damage, but did have a vanos solenoid issue when the shop went to retime the car after the pinned hub was installed.

It's great! Just have to figure out the route i want to go for more traction when I mix. E30 and above = spinning through 3rd and feeling like its barely holding in 4th. Tires are 285/35/18.

Its the OTS+ variant. Had to buy the 93 and e85 for him to combine into a flex tune.

Pick up 285/35/19 Nitto NT555R2. You will hook up to about 700. Take it from someone who's tried just about every tire… it's the best all season style tire that hooks (by this i mean channels for water to exit). Then run g2 for the fronts. All Michelin are ice skates. Softer compound then r888r aswell.

question, crank hub full fix ie pinned etc,is like £1900 over here in uk,all well and good, but if sch does happen, the ecu will catch it,and put car into limp mode,so you then get it fixed for £1900,but my question is,in all the 44 failures, did any of them suffer engine failure and needing rebuilt,?

What did the error message look like? Check this out:

I have an F82 M4 DCT and I was doing a pull in 2nd gear.

I also dont have it tuned so its stock power with upgraded charge pipes, ARM Catless Resonated downpipes and AA EL exhaust resonated. I hope that its just an issue caused by this instead of crankhub.

Accidentally Quoted someone but:

I had a 4 pin Crankhub installed in SoCal a week ago, with upgraded chargepipes, catless downpipes, and AA EL resonated midpipe. The car is stock power.

I have never heard of a 4 pin crankhub spinning before, so I might be the first. Going to get the codes read later at Autozone. I have also heard of a drivetrain malfunction error appearing because of catless downpipes without a tune. I am praying that it is just that.

Thoughts? Have you ever heard of this? I have a DCT as well and it is a 2020 with barely 17,000 miles. I drive the car easy but I will be honest I did do a pretty aggressive pull when the error message occured. Check this out for more details:

Thanks for anyones help.
