"Charging malfunction: Battery not recharging" error

I got a charging malfunction battery not recharging error message a few days ago. It came up again once a day. Car is stock with only cosmetic upgrades. I took it to the dealer and they said nothing came up when they did the diagnostic test and said its fine. I left and the error came again. Sent my advisor the picture of the error and he said I should bring it back because he doesn't want the battery to die on me when I'm driving. So I'm back at the dealer and I'm leaving it here and getting a loaner. They said they should have it resolved by Monday. Lame!

I remember a few of you had a similar error message but I couldn't find an update on the root cause

Got the same charging malfunction - battery not recharging error message again today. It comes on and goes away. It came on 3 times on my commute home from work.
The dealer said the battery was fine and changed the alternator a few weeks ago and said it was fixed but I guess they were wrong. The car drives fine.
Does anyone know what could be the cause? Sadly I'm going to have to take the car back to the dealer again

Is your car a 2015? How many miles do you have on it?

Hmm hopefully they figure it out, or it is just the battery and they try it and see!

I agree. Hopefully it's quick. My dealer has me in an x3 and the seats suck. Also no blind spot warning! Who wants to turn their head before changing lanes. You take for granted all the features and technology our Ms have until you drive a normal car. At least I did.

Best scenario - they buy back my m4 dct and let me get a m3 comp pkg in manual transmission

Pulley from auxiliary belt broke! Let them check it asap! Common issue with these cars!

I just sent a message to my advisor. Thank you so much for the input. You would think the techs would figure it out but I guess they can't. Anyways was it a quick fix?

Sorry, which auxiliary belt, And what pulley? Just learning here... There's a tensioner pulley and two deflection pulleys, if either of them broke (which is very unlikely and take too many miles before they wobble), then the OP would have more serious issues. But those are on the main belt, the second smaller belt drives the AC compressor and has no pulleys.

Exactly. I was thinking of buying my car at lease end but I probably won't since my specific m4 is already having some issues

My advisor said BMWNA said to change the battery. So they are going to do that now. I told my advisor that when I first had this problem and they changed the alternator only. I don't get it.
They also asked for permission to do an extended test drive to make sure the faults don't re-appear. I said ok and get me my car back asap

I'm going to look into the lemon law if I get it back and it happens again

Just adding my issue to this thread. The tensioner pulley on my '16 M3 with 13,000 miles failed and shredded the drive belt causing the charging malfunction - battery not recharging message to appear. Odd for this to happen. I've had one other odd issue; the clutch slave cylinder leaking and the one not so odd issue; the lower tone horn failing.

My 2014 GT has been running rough lately. Then yesterday the AC pretty much just stopped blowing. No more cold air, but also the amount of air is VERY diminished. And now the warning about the charging malfunction shows up. Also, after driving for about 10 min, I get a secondary warning telling me that “charging has replenished, start engine” (but it’s currently running) and letting me know that all times using battery will be disabled (or something like that). Just all kinds of warnings.

The battery is less than a year old, so I would be shocked to think it’s that. It give me a “battery discharged” error when it’s been turned off and I go to start it up again rather frequently. I’m wondering if my whole electrical system is whacked?

You mentioned the AC… is this just all coincidence or would a bad alternator cause my ac to crap out?
