Android Auto alternative utilizing Carplay?

Hello Friends and BMW Enthusiasts ,

I just assumed (subleased) an F80 M3 Manual circa 2018 that I located on this very forum ().

I am an Android fan (you might say Nerd- you wouldn't be the first), and loved the Android Auto function on my 2 other vehicles.

BMW seems to have some disagreements with Google about how the data is utilized, keeping Android off their "NEXT BIG THING" system- ()! It was one reason I almost kept the Focus RS instead of leasing this vehicle.

I thought of a good workaround, but I'm not sure if it will work.

So finally, my question for you all- Can I connect an Apple iPhone () to use the Carplay (for the Waze, and for the Spotify) and still have my Android phone connected to the Bluetooth for the calling of all of my buds?

I did a search of the forums() before posting my query, but they spoke about having some "Enhanced Bluetooth" option to have that function; which was not offered on the 2018 BMW F80 M3, so I have come to ask specifically about the 2018 model of BMW F80 M3.

Thanks friends, and I hope that you all (except the jerks) have a lovely weekend ().

Signed,
Ral Pie

Hi all,

I am on mobile now, so apologies if I am sounding terse.

I have connected an Apple iPhone with the Wireless Carplay. A wonderful technology!

Sadly, my Android telephone was not able to simultaneously connect to the Bluetooth.

I would love to hear from this wonderful community, there must be a solution friends!

I'm not sure if this will work, but have you tried getting the cheapest iPhone that supports car play, and tethering data from your Android phone?

I would just use iDrive with Bluetooth, but if you really want Android Auto you can try adding this.

That won't work in a 2018 with wireless car play. The iphone's wifi is used to connect to idrive for car play, so tethering was not possible (I tried)

That was my original plan...

You are correct!

Back to the drawing board. What did you end up doing?

It's an android unit and a lot less money than bimmertech retrofits.

Hi Ral Pie,

I was surprised to read that 6NS was not offered in your model year vehicle. Try adding "6NS" to your FA and VO Code your NBT EVO. If you do not have the tools/uncomfortable doing this yourself, I am sure a member local to you would be able to help.

FYI, MomoM3 coded 6NS successfully -

It seems you need to plug in the phone to get bluetooth audio to work on the Avinusa unit.

Wish there was an affordable way to upgrade to the latest idrive and wifi carplay etc.

I had the Ugode version in my X1, which seems to be a step up from the Avin, and while it was nice to get CarPlay/Android Auto, the system worked like 95% of the time. It had some intermittent bugs, the sound quality wasn't the greatest, and it was finicky at times.

Android Auto alternative

Android auto alternatives are not very much compatible with all car models. Currently I own Suzuki's car but my last car was BMW M4. When I installed latest carplay that time only carplay for android spy shots were available. But I ordered for them I those worked very well. But I don't have faith in the alternatives.

I found this online. Haven't got it yet but they claim it works on head units without Android auto.

I ended up reaching out to the company and they said it doesn't work for BMW and then removed BMW from the list. I just ended up going with the Andream MMI box. Was a relatively quick and easy install.
