Good find. I've seen a few stories over the past year and a half of this bolt shearing at the track.

Their inspection instructions are kind of confusing.

They should've organized them like so:
1) Check if current torque is >110 ft-lbs, if not replace, fasteners
2) If current torque is >110 ft-lbs, unfasten bolt/nut, remove, and clean bolt threads. Replace all-metal nut if next installation will be 3rd tightening, replace nylock nut if next installation will be 4th tightening.
3) Install bolt/nut and torque to 180 ft-lbs.
4) Inspect 180 ft-lbs installation torque during your tech inspections.

How many people are going to realize their basic torque wrenches don't go to 180 ft-lbs? =P

I would think if you confirm torque is above xxx value then you can assume the failure mode is not present. I hate loosening and re torquing bolts on important fasteners like this.

I agree that you *should* just be able to torque to 180 ft-lbs if you do the check and find it hasn't backed off from 110 ft-lbs. I was just stating more simply what they said in their instructions.

How different are the GT4 arms than the GTS arms? Do they require additional GT4 components to function correctly.

I need to see an explanation of the problem and reasons for the solution before buying a set. I don't know why a stud and 2nd nut (2nd point of failure) is going to solve the problem.

F8X arms vs M4 GT4:

To mount on the F8X, 12mm steering stoppers are necessary, depending on the rim and spacer configuration longer arms are needed.
I made custom lengh for my setup.

I wouldn't waste time looking for a solution to something that seems to have been made by a 5 year old child

So update to this...

A friend's shop called me on Friday and said, "Hey FaRKle! by chance do you have any extra SPL bolts or studs?"

"I actually do have the stud retrofit kit for my SPL LCA, but haven't installed it yet, why?"

*receives picture of new SPL stud sheared in half*

"We installed this SPL stud, torqued to 180ft-lbs as the instructions say, and while we were working on the other side (before the car was put on the ground) heard a *pop* noise and noticed the stud had broken!"

After calling SPL about it (who overnighted them a new set of studs, but they had a track day the following morning), SPL instructed them to only torque to 160ft-lbs now...

You called it!

RbBugBitMe also took a look at the pictures and suspects hydrogen embrittlement from the way it broke.

Geez, just lower the torque a little? SPL is not trustworthy to me at this point.

You won't find nicer machined parts than what Track/S turns out. I've got a number of parts on my car and plan to get a full set of arms front and rear. He turned me a set of solid front tension bushings to hold me over. The thought that goes into improving the hardware and not just another of the same, can't be ignored.
